I think for this Ethan deserves at least some (any) kind of success. 🙂

It’s not that I wasn’t expecting her roommate to answer the door. It’s just that I was expecting Lilah to be the roommate that Ethan had somehow not yet met or been aware of.

No. This is Rachel. We met her on the awkward dinner date when Lucas brought Andrew, and Emily said “this is my roommate, rachel”

Hunh, didn’t remember her being introduced as the roommate, but yes I remembered Rachel herself.

I have always liked Ethan, but Ethan 1.0 felt very dumb in the beginning. He did a lot of dumb things that felt like they were being done for stupids sake. It was very entertaining and I was happy to follow his story, but I had a hard time believing the more serious Ethan moments. Ethan 2.0 is silly, but I feel like it isn’t because he is stupid, and many of the funny things that happen to him come from insecurities he has that are very real to me. I connect with this Ethan and my heart bleeds for… Read more »

Indeed. And I’d argue that there’s certainly a place for the over-the-top buffoonery of a character that has a distinct madness to their method, that attacks problems not from the left or right, but crosswise-dorsal; a character that is honest-to-goodness trying to be logical – but just sees everything from the a different angle. It’s always fund to see savant-level solutions that come out of that viewpoint, from a character that might struggle with buttering toast, if only because it seems too gosh-darn simple. That element is certainly more understated now, and I miss that. But it’s also nigh-impossible to… Read more »

A pre-plotted protector. A grounded guardian. A story-arc knight.

Yes, the difference is early CAD was more road runner/willecyote cartoon and then later became something a bit deeper than that, but the character already had all that baggage from the early road runner phase that he never completely shook.

Hence Tim rebooting the storyline after having Ethan’s hijinks finally catch up to him with the time machine. That allowed the character to be written as the more refined version without the wild “should have died 100s of times over” baggage from the beginning.

Ethan always did have the power to return from the dead before the reboot, from the second strip in 2002:

and on, through 2007:

Even in his alternate adventures:

though the latter is ‘explained’ by cloning.

Am I the only one who laughed his head off at the line, “Rachel? Shit. I forgot to factor in the 50% roommate possibility”?

I was laughing so hard, I received amused/concerned looks from colleagues. 😀
