Have to wonder how often this happens in reality. I mean you could start a whole other comic just from the mishaps of One misplaced profile or using the animaniacs good idea/bad idea style of showing how to use them.

I love the character of Scott. I’m just glad that he’s developed so much from Scott 1.0. And I’m looking forward to seeing his own arc and growth over time.

Yeah, I like this new version of him so far. I stopped like the old version of Scott after he stopped being a cranky shut-in and was a puppet for the penguin’s world dominance. Kinda lost the edge for me after that.

It’s been two years (three on August 28th) since I lost my Fiancee to suicide, and I have absolutely no idea how to get back into the dating game. I’m still not over her, and I know that I never will be ‘completely’ over her either, but I can’t spend the rest of my life alone either. We both totally stumbled into the relationship without even looking for someone and it transitioned into the happiest two and half years of my life.

I totally get where both Ethan and Scott are coming from though.

Hey man. I have gone through the same thing (November 31st, 2017) after being together for 5 years. All I can say is that therapy helps immensely and finding new hobbies really helped me. I spiraled hard for the first few months and moved back to my parents for a while as being at the condo was not good for me. After stabilizing and moving back, I threw everything out and started fresh and got into some new hobbies to get me out of the house. It helped that I have 2 dogs to keep me company (both were therapy… Read more »

I know I don’t know either of you and I know the following sentiment doesn’t have much to do with the comic, but I’m rooting for the both of you. As of writing this, it looks like at least a combined 21 other people are, too.

I know the words of strangers are not much against life altering tribulations, but I hope there’s at least some small comfort to be had in knowing that there are folks on your side, even if there’s jack-all most of us can do to help.

Something I had to come to terms with after my own loss was that it’s okay to be okay. A lot of folks find out you’re a widower and they treat you with a certain degree of… kid gloves it felt like. I used to find it very suffocating that new people you meet always think they can never measure up to a memory, or that they think you should always be hung up on your deceased lover, but my biggest advice is- It’s okay to move on. It’s okay to be okay. Most folks don’t get where I’m coming… Read more »

I commented on this this morning and tried sharing my own experience on being a widower myself, and tried giving a bit of advice that has helped me and for whatever reason it was deleted. Was honestly looking to see if anything I said could’ve helped or just, anything.

That shit wasn’t easy to open up about or bring up, and whoever’s moderating this, fuck you.

Been reading this comic for what feels like a decade, and made sure to hit up patreon, but I’m fucking done.

Screw you dude. You clearly don’t need my views or patronage.

At the risk of being a total douche-bag, I feel like we should all cut Just Marty a little slack. Absolutely, that was an asshole, over-the-top post… IF you factor out that the original post was about losing a spouse. But in context – I dunno, man, the first time that hold-for-modiration voodoo hit a post I made, I’ll admit I thought I was being blocked and my reaction was less than savory. Sure, I did my research find out that what happened was totally reasonable. Sure, I didn’t make an angry post or threaten monetary retribution (admittedly, because I… Read more »

That’s a fair point, and it’s also true that as a society, it behooves us to learn how to take criticism when we fly off the handle. We all make mistakes and there is often vast, unexplored territory to be mined between the poles of destroying a person with no mercy and outright ignoring bad behavior. I get that middle ground is where you were at. And you’re right that you didn’t cross the line with your response. But for the rest of us, as anonymous internet strangers, it’s tempting to jump on the bandwagon and take valid criticism into… Read more »

Randall Munroe dedicated an entire comic to how 10,000 people are learning a new thing every day. Some folks just don’t understand what moderation is, and it’s their first time.
Just something to consider.

During the Thanksgiving comic: https://cad-comic.com/comic/home-cooked-p1/ , Lucas had made mention to Scott that it had been several years. At the time it seemed pretty obvious that he had lost a girlfriend. But this is the first I’ve seen that it was mentioned as being Carlie, specifically.

This also brings up the possibility that Scott wasn’t born a paraplegic, but that it happened due to the attack that killed Carlie.

If I’m not mistaken, Carlie was Ethan’s sister. For reasons known as plot/rebooting, instead of a jackass Rory (who might still exist?) Ethan has a sister by the name of Carlie who got mugged and killed sometime well before E&L had powers.

When doing co-op on games where you’re both on the same console, the TV screen would get split in half. One player got the top half and the other got the bottom half. Ethan is assuming that is what they are asking.

Fun fact: In this specific context there usually is even a third option called “Switch” which is a funny little coincidence with the console.

Yep, it´s pretty core to it, having the top be the dominant partner and bottom the submissive one. I´d say the joke still works in that respect though : )

BDSM terminology is Dom/Sub and it’s really not to be conflated with top/bottom.
There are dom bottoms, sub tops, there are actually gay people with no interest in BDSM at all.

Yeah, I completely forgot about that. Going to go with the fact that I had just woken up.

Edit: Was making Top and Bottom synonymous with Dom and Sub.

In BDSM culture, top/bottom are very common alternative terms for dominant/submissive. I’d wager the usage stems from common more generalized roots as they all share a common basic meaning within the context of relationships dating all the way back to when everyone assumed relationship meant man/woman and top/bottom respectively. The gay community may have used it first for all I know (being one of the first sexual sub-cultures needing such gender-neutral terms), but I suspect it’s more relevant in BDSM where top/bottom signify meaningful elements of both the relationship and the actual activities, but more generally (including homosexual couplings) not… Read more »

Top/Bottom is not often used in the BDSM terminology. It’s more of a gay terminology.

Also being it is early morning and my coffee hadn’t kicked in it took me way longer than it should have what you implying in the second paragraph above. Also makes the double date comic make a lot more sense now. Thank you.

Ethan downloaded Grinder, which is a gay app – because Lucas is gay in this comic. It’s absolutely hilarious.

As for top/bottom – it means which one is pitcher and which one is the catcher, generally. Most gay males are one or the other predominantly.

My goodness, I am suitably impressed, specifically with Scott. He’s even learned how to laugh, and to smile, and honestly, since those Days of the Penguin. The classic RTFM ‘no tech noob bullshit’ person whose knowledge one respected but you secretly wished you’d never met every time you had to interact with them. That he has come this far since those days, thanks to himself as a character and you as a writer, Tim, is enough to move me very deeply. Thank you for that, Tim.
