Yes, that is part of it. For what it’s worth, Jaime has declared he won’t be blue this time… so take that as you will. I’ll state that I believe there IS a route here in which they can pull in past actors from previous Spider-man installments for a live-action take on the Spider-verse… I’m just a little skeptical that Sony will do it well, and not just repeat past mistakes with these characters. I thought that while Garfield was a good Peter Parker, those ‘Amazing’ movies were largely forgettable. I’d hate to think they’re just going to tie them… Read more »

Except many asian restaurants identify as Chinese despite offering Korean, Thai, and Vietnamese dishes. My local one “China Beijing” does amazing Pad Thai and Vietnamese spring rolls.
I don’t think it’s a stretch to claim Chinese has become the Band-Aid or Kleenex of asian cuisine.
I dont know where you’re from, but where i live we call Take out Thai food, Thai. We call veitnamese food, Pho, and korean food korean. Because they are distinct from each other.
Ehh, I could go either way on this debate. Our nearest Chinese place has items on the menu from Chinese, Japanese, Thai, and Vietnamese cuisines. The local sushi joint? Japanese, Korean, Thai, Chinese, and Vietnamese dishes. Our favorite Thai place? Well, it’s actually just Thai. They’re pretty on point. My preferred Korean takeout? It has Korean, plus one or two items of Chinese and Japanese origin. Our favorite Vietnamese place? Vietnamese, Chinese, and Thai dishes. Point being, lots of people get “Chinese” without regard for—or oftentimes even an awareness of—where the cuisine originated. I’m not saying that’s a good thing.… Read more »
Where I live, we also have restaurants that brand themselves as “Asian fusion.” It’s not unusual to see Pad Thai offered on the menu along with Beef Bulgogi, Schezuan Chicken, and Pho.
It’s probably less to do with region, and more to do with size of the city/town and how diverse the population is. In my small Wisconsin hometown, the Chinese restaurant also had Thai and Japanese, just because there was no other competition, the locals just called it all “Chinese” anyways, and it attracted out-of-towners that were dying for good sushi.

Did they plan it carefully thou? Hulk didn’t work out so well so the Norton movie is just kinda in the MCU. Outside of Cpt. America and Avengers they didn’t really reference it outside of a little Name- / eventdrop. They added ultron a few month before Antman and therefore had stark invent ultron. they did Civil war without the X-Men and even spiderman was just written in afterwards as they got the rights to it and he didn’t have any major part in it. Norton was a pain in the ass to work with on that film, so they chose not to hire him back. That’s not something you can plan for. Plus Universal owns the rights to release Hulk movies, so they had to try and work around that the best they could, which became harder once the MCU took off; it prevented them from pursuing Hulk solo films and so they had to plan a story for him within other movies. So I think they did a pretty decent job planning that arc considering the limitations they had to work with. Changing… Read more »

“Ugh, god Tim, that’s disgusting, do you have to talk that way during our date night, now all I can think of is crusty balls when I look at my food” isn’t quite the rimshot punchline you’d want to end a strip.
The MCU doesn’t really harmonize. There were cracks before, but things have just been blown open since Endgame. The way that movie ends with everything “back to normal” is just insulting to the theme of dealing with trauma that the movie started out with. Far From Home just brushes the whole thing off as a blip, that didn’t having any lasting effects on anyone’s psyche. Also with Far From Home, it turns out that Iron Man built a fleet of death drones that can kill anyone in the world at a single command; it totally flies in the face of… Read more »
Just because Endgame ended with victory and undoing the snap doesn’t mean there were no lasting consequences or trauma. Those five years affected every single one of the six original Avengers in a very distinct way on-screen. Natasha coped by desperately trying to continue leading a team in saving what she could of the world, as it’s the only way she ever felt she was able to “balance” the awful things she did as a Russian agent. That need to atone is the same reason she ultimately decides to sacrifice herself on Vormir. She struggled with her past through her… Read more »
Well, I have some thoughts about the MCU going forward, but if your primary complaint is that the future of the MCU may look more diverse than it has in the past, that’s not a discussion I’m going to engage in.
Theres a difference between diversity and wokeness. Diversity is like a neighborhood full of all different ethnicity and modes of thought and everybody at least respecting one another even when they disagree. Wokeness is like a marching band with no musical talent clanging down your street at 1am. They assigned the positions and instruments based on an ever shifting metric of perceived oppression instead of talent and demand you come out and cheer for them or they’ll stand outside your house and play till you do. Anyone that has the gaul to complain that they need to sleep so they… Read more »
Honestly it sounds more like your definition is “Wokeness is diversity when it’s not done in a way I agree with.” Like, what facts here are you basing these conclusions on? Are there any, or is it entirely your personal perception that “people of talent” are being passed over in favor of “people of color”? And yeah, I understand that lately media has taken a hard turn towards inclusivity, and that a lot of people feel like that’s “forced” in some way. I have no doubt that, in some instances, it IS forced, in the sense that there may be… Read more »
My view of wokeness vs diversity: Diversity is more “This black director has done historically black films in the past, and this brings a certain perspective which adds value to the film.” Wokeness is more “We have a black director because he is black,” or “This film should be considered amazing because we have a black director (not because of what filmography/talent/etc this actually brings.”
The Oscars have just instituted rules that nominees for “Best Film” (iirc) must have a certain amount of minority representation in the cast and crew. That’s wokeness, not diversity.
What film hired a black director solely for the color of his skin?
What film were you told you were supposed to consider amazing because of the color of the director (and more importantly, since when does people telling you to like or not like a movie matter? It’s entirely subjective. The number of times I’ve loved a movie that was panned, or hated a movie that was adored are too numerous to count, and it has nothing to do with what color the cast was)?
The MCU in particular has not been too bad. Maybe a hint or two of the crusty nutsack geting too close to the food in captain marvel but overall they’ve been more successful than most doing diversity right when they try than some other studios up to this point. For example Black panther, A+. Mostly black cast but everything felt natural, well as natural as can be for superhero fiction anyway. Nothing felt forced in there and it was an enjoyable romp. Captain marvel, C. Not the worst offender I’ve ever seen but borderline. Yes your an established character who’s… Read more »
Ahh there we are. The timeless “Why race/gender change an existing character instead of just inventing a new one of that race/gender?” argument. Why? For starters, because all of those characters come from a time when white and male was the default. And, since just about none of them have stories/powers/etc that are intrinsically tied to the color of their skin, the fact that they come from a time when women and people of color were marginalized is not a particularly strong argument that they deserve to be grandfathered into some sort of protected status. It’s very hard not to… Read more »

The definition of Woke that I would use is that a person is aware that racial inequalities exist and that they themselves have biases. The Simon Wiesenthal Holocaust Museum in LA has two doors going into it. One says “Biased” and the other says “Unbiased” The “Unbiased” door is locked.

Sony remastered Spider-Man and changed the character model from the stock one X-years ago to one that looks an awfully lot like Tom Holland.
