Backfill

June 29, 2022 by Tim

Boy, it never lasts long, that feeling of making a dent.

Finish one, buy three more to take its place.

The Hardcover books from our most recent Kickstarter are now available for purchase. Currently we’re only shipping to North America. Digital options will follow soon.

Remember: If you have unfinished business when you die, you will become a ghost.

Should’a told me before I got obsessed with roguelikes.

At this point when I die, I’m pretty sure I’ll just climb out of the pool, shake the blood out of my hair, wave to Hypnos, fist-bump Achilles, pet Cerberus, straighten up at the mirror, and then go for another run.

This, but no way I’m stopping at just one pet – the good boy has 3 heads for a reason.

I’d argue that would be hell, short of being a being capable of absolute apathy or absolute empathy…

You’re either watching the folly of humanity play out as those with money or power toy with the existence of those just trying to get by, or you’re fortunate enough to see it overcome those trappings, but too late for it to have enriched the lives of yourself and those you love.

My wife and me (try to) never buy a new game until we have finished the previous one we are playing. The problem is when we replay a game and found that for one or other reason we have free dlcs… then, then backlog growth…

Great to see the kickstarter books going retail, even if it’s only for NA. It is sad, that not many get to read the extended ending for 1.0 in physical format, so them getting a chance to see this “remaster” edition, even if they missed the kickstarter campaign is awesome. I’m just looking forward for volume two for each series 🙂

I’d lower the bar and aim to just play the games and not feel guilty about missing out. I have 4-5 hundreds of games on steam and letting go of the dream to play them all was the best decision I had to make.

You don’t have a backlog, you have a collection. A library from which to choose whatever strikes your fancy at the moment.

Ok, but what happens when the collection gets so big it gets hard to select a game?

Yup, I think there are websites that will do it for you, too.

Or just buy another game that sounds good at the moment. 😀

Don’t forget to add Xbox Game Pass ontop of that.

Hey, remember when we had a new game come out once every few weeks instead of every day? Ahhh, those were the simpler times…

Huh.. currently locked in on a Hunt stinge, bought TW3 but its sitting on my HD till immortal empires and updates, and patiently awaiting sunbreaks release..

i haven’t played cyberpunk since it launched and probably need to get back to that at some point.

I feel validated!

But with a huge backlog already and humble bundle piling ten or so new games ontop of it each month.. i am just ignoring the steam sales completely nowadays.

at least, i’m trying to. Keep getting friends ‘helpfully’ showing me deals.

I.. MUST… RESIST!

I’ve recently made a document listing all the games I have on the various game stores. I then put a status on each, to check which I’ve completed and which I’ve sampled. And which games I simply never played.

If I feel the need to buy a discounted game, I just open that file and that need goes away.

I use GoG Galaxy for that, it automatically syncs with the stores. You can also use playnite which is a little more feature rich but also more janky.

I havent feared steam sales for few years now, reason: I already more or less own any worthwhile game, and I consider 99% of modern new releases as absolute trash thats not worth even heaviest discount; the 1% I buy regardless of sale status when ever I find such rare jewel

That might be true but if they release 10,000 games in a year, that still means there are 100 games worth playing. And if we say 90% of those good games are in genres you just don’t happen to like, that still leaves 10 good games in the genres you like.

gotta also account that I do exclude now: activision, ea, sony, microsoft, bandai, SQE, ubisoft and rockstar as publishers, it further limits 10 games down to 1 maybe per 5 years

Hey Tim. Will there be a digital version of these books?

$125USD Including shipping to Ontario is a bit more than I can comfortably afford for comic books. That comes to $161.00CDN.

Oddly, my biggest “dent” came when I thought that I might be moving and I did a long and hard assess of the games that I knew that I was never going to bother finishing. Of course, those were a major factor in me getting a Switch when a couple years later in Black Friday 2019, I became worried about Entertainmart closing down and all my store credit becoming worthless so I got a Switch. Still, I have been slowing down as I attend to “The Loop”. I plan to get a PS5 next year but only for the (mostly)… Read more »

I long ago abandoned the idea that I should eventually play a game just because I have it, let alone treat unplayed games like a backlog. Sure it can feel wasteful to pay for a game you never play, but it’s doubly wasteful to apply the sunk cost fallacy and play a game you’re not currently enjoying. So instead of throwing good time after bad money, I accept that the library collection is a “dollar cost averaging” strategy. It decouples the cost/value expectation of a particular game (and the research effort to pick out games I’ll eventually play) from the… Read more »

Honestly, I love having a large backlog. I’m a strong believer in “play whatever you want and don’t sweat whether you finish the game or not,” because being stressed about it negates the relaxation that is supposed to come with playing video games.
