Quel is desperate and is taking a huge risk to break Cort out of his spiral. Not ideal given the risk, but Quel knows he’s running out of options.

Cort deserves it. He’s forcing one of the very few people who genuinely cares about him and has probably known him the longest into a awful situation because he’s too paranoid to be willing to give ‘the man’ a chance despite the fact that cooperating with the Federation is his best chance at getting out of this alive and still in possession both of his arms. This is Quel’s best shot at snapping Cort out of his childish selfishness.

Best shot? No, Quel’s best shot was already stated in the previous page: Tell them he’s working with a contact, or lead them away himself.

The Federation is no better than the other factions, just have a few more rules they sometimes follow. With this sort of power in play, Cort has no play that depends on chumming up with the any of the major governments. And they’d experiment on him and Nyrah without any compunction.

See, that’s where you are wrong. Quel holds no actual power in the Federation, and like any good ol’ government, they will take that Starcaster away from a man they cannot trust to use it as THEY see fit.

That’s a hell of a cliffhanger of a sentence

That would probably punch him into oblivion, along with a good portion of the planet.

Goes straight through Quel, manages to take out that space farm family’s house, and maybe clip a Federation ship on the way. All in a day’s work.

I’m thinking Quel is trying to get through to Cort by redirecting his anger at Quel rather than the “run away” mindset. It won’t help Cort to try that and Quel knows it.

Honestly, what is his expectation here? “Oh yeah, you’re right! I AM a selfish person! Totally forgot! Thank you for bringing up what is an extremely painful memory to remind me. I’ll totally abandon my friends to come with you!”

Quel isn’t perfect either it appears.

Quel’s probably been stewing over Cort’s actions *for years*. This is some of that anger coming out in a totally antiproductive way.

I like how the comic is written. Splits the line between believable and dramatic or reasonable and emotional. No one ever feels especially hit with the idiot bat but they often say not the optimal thing but its understandable due to their mental state.

For a pulpy space opera? It’s damn good.

I think it’s some anger born out of frustration. Clearly Quel liked Cort’s dad, and he’s rather pissed that Cort can be loyal to someone he just met not long ago, but not to his honorable father. Everyone has a limit to how much they can take. This is Cort’s last chance with Quel as his friend, and here he is ready to throw it all down the tubes. Quel’s been more than generous with him, so yeah he’s getting pissed. Cort went outlaw, betraying his family and his friends, he keeps being rather selfish and trying to stay out… Read more »

Cort puts Nyrah above himself. A good reason to conflict with the reasonable thing of coming peacefully with the Feds. It’s Cort growing, in one dimension.

I’m hoping the Dranglex show up and let Cort put off joining the Feds for a little while longer. Maybe even have him take out one of those sunfucker’s ships!

I get what Quel is doing, touching on a nerve to get Cort out of his mindset. A risky move at best with what Cort can do without trying. But Quel is desperate, and is willing to risk it if he can get Cort to stop and listen to reason.
I don’t blame Cort, anyone that lives with that much guilt would have a knee-jerk reaction like that, to be reminded of the biggest mistake of his life. IF he doesn’t trigger the Starcaster and kill Quel, he’ll be spent and open to clear-minded talk.

Hmm, the starcasters tend to react to emotion and impulse. What happens when the weilder gets pissed? Hmmm. Welp, this is gonna end poorly.

If Cort can’t handle being reminded of the crappy stuff he chose to do to other people due to his own greed and selfishness then he doesn’t deserve the Starcaster.

This is the Ethan and Scott thing again. Both have good arguments and both aren’t exactly seeing the other’s point of view. Quel is a good soldier and he wanted that for Cort who was his friend’s son. For Cort, that was a “square peg-round hole” situation. Both Cort and Quel are coming at this discussion from wildly differing viewpoints. Here would probably be a good place to remind everyone of how Speck said that Cort went with Jack because he accepted Cort for who he was as opposed to Quel who wanted Cort to be someone he is not.… Read more »
