Avengers, on the Helicarrier, after Director Fury refers to needing to figure out what Loki’s goal is before he “unleashes his flying monkeys.” Which is a reference to the Wizard of Oz, which came out August 25, 1939 (and the book came out in 1900) so it was something Steve Rogers knew about from before he was frozen in 1944. There’s a similar reference in Falcon and the Winter Soldier where Sam Wilson (Falcon) refers to Gandalf as a sorcerer and Bucky Barnes (the Winter Soldier) corrects him, saying he’s a Maiar (basically an angel, and the correct identification —… Read more »

Honestly, The Prestige is such a good, yet underrated movie. I totally get why Analog’s powers would give him nightmares about that situation.

Though it would also mean that a lot of organ donations could be handled ?

Interesting thought. Depending on his blood type he could be really useful or just short of useless. Blood type O versus blood type AB has very different potential. Not to mention in organ donation they also look at factors/markers that are common to one ethnic group or another. AB is about 3-4% of the US population, but the nations with the highest rate of AB blood type are India, South Korea, North Korea, Japan, and he doesn’t exactly scream pacific rim or Indian in his outward genetic appearance. Otherwise he could be one of the more common blood types in… Read more »

What if the organ he donated despawn with him when he dies?

Didn’t he try already to save his own blood before respawning, in one of the earlier episodes?

Consider that, apart from a very small section of the brain that you are born with and die with, every other cell in your body is replaced somewhere between every few hours and seven years (depending on the organ).

This means that if you’re over 7 years old, you’re in a clone body.
Over 14, you’re in your second clone body.
Over 21, your third.

So, we’re all in fact clones.

Sleep well. 🙂

The notion of a single consciousness lasting throughout our entire life, is being challenged by specialists. Some even claim, our consciousness is not really the same one we had a couple days ago, but a new (if similar) one. Considering periods of sleep in the middle.

And that, along with our subjectivity, can be used to argue that we don’t have “true” consciousness and self.

Take it a step further, can we know that we are the same person day after day when our consciousness stops? I mean, how is today me and tomorrow me the same person if there is an undeniable break in consciousness.

This has been discussed and argued over from the greeks Parmenides to the Buddha to Japanese shinto beliefs.

There isn’t really a break, though. Your brain may be asleep, but it’s still active and so is your consciousness. It’s just doing things that aren’t “awake.”

With that in mind, it begs the question why we age, or why scars stay in place, or why injuries can be permanent. Not saying you’re wrong, of course; moreso I’m curious how we can harness that to increase our longevity and healing.

the short answer is evolution favors using resources on making new babies rather than fixing an existing person, as long as it doesn’t impair your ability to have and raise kids there isn’t a lot of motivation to fix it

Scars are caused by sufficient damage to the area that the body doesn’t know how to fix it properly again. (Sometimes it’s cellular genetic damage, but more often in humans, it’s because subcutaneous fat prevents the skin from sealing properly, so the body heals around it.)

No, it doesn’t work that way. Every highly specialized cell (like neurons, and also the striped muscle fibers and the muscle of the heart) stays with you until either it or you die, and is NOT replaced, not in an hour, not in seven years, not in seventy years.
Factcheck, people. Factcheck.

What do you mean by “a very small section of the brain”?

As far as I know, (almost) none of your neurons divide and/or replace themselves after you’re born. Your brain mostly consists of the same neurons from your birth to your death.

As a matter of fact, the brain tissue is still partially embryonic when a child is born, it differentiates into mature brain structures during the first year of life. After that, yeah, they’re not replaced.

WOW, I think this is the first, and ONLY occasion anyone anywhere at any time could reference that movie and it be 100% accurate and on point o.O

Ethan making said connection is even scarier because-wait, does that mean Hugh Jackmen exists in this universe?

…and just like that I have completely forgotten my train of thought because of that possibility lol

Not necessary, in Last Action Hero, Terminator films exist but Stallone played the killer robot.

I figure whatever piece of pop culture is needed for a joke will exist in the world. The only thing that will likely not exist are all the super hero movies. It would be a bit weird.
This does mean prestige is not Batman vs Wolverine in magician costumes. That’s a bit of a shame.

Analog is a cover identity. It is not who he is, it’s just who he pretends to be to protect his normal life. Well as normal as Ethan’s life ever is.

This will always lead into the question of who is the most real version of the character? Is it Analog or is it Ethan? This is just a point constantly made in hero story telling about the person they are in normal daily life is the mask to hide the heroic natured soul they really are. What would this person be if given the choice? Would they choose to be Analog forever or Ethan? That is the choice nearly every heroic character is forced to confront when exploring a romantic relationship. Who is the real me, and who do I… Read more »

The sentiment is nice Lilah, but he tried that once and the troll responded by escalating to murder.

This is classic Ethan

First in depth conversation with the woman he wants to date and: –

a) They’re sitting on dumpsters in an alleyway

and

b) He’s being typically Ethan in the most Ethanish way he can possibly Ethan

It’s a good sign she hasn’t ran away yet

Like someone targeting Batman and Bruce Wayne being told by those that know that ‘Well aren’t they only targeting Batman with this?’ (Well not Dick or Alfred probably, they would know the truth)

Begs the question, though… What if Ethan’s power isn’t actually infinite lives? What if instead it’s like the Konami code and gives a large but still quite finite number of lives?

There would be no functional difference from Ethan’s perspective, at least until the number of lives hits zero.

I’m 99% sure Ethan has expressed concern about this possibility as well earlier in the comic.

You know, Ethan does sound like an idiot at the end but it does sound like a legitimate concern. Where are the body going?
