Hmm are they afraid that starcasters could be destroyed with the ship, or simply that they cannot afford the time and effort to find such a small device drifting away in the wreckage. Guess they cant track one even at close range with scanners for special metals (ie startrek)
Most likely present, at the end of the previous story arc they were getting jumped by a small fleet that had clear intentions to capture the ship, or at least, its contents.

I’ve always thought the term “starcaster” sounds like a necron sex toy.
I reread the last chapter and their big bad leader did say “We will pull it from the wreckage if we must!.”
So that is on the table.
This looks… less than ideal.
