I think I would rather get it delayed than having little staple holes in the screen. Even if it still works, that would drive me crazy.

I don’t think a delay would have avoided that problem. I think that was just bad decision making on somebody’s part.

I pre-ordered it at one shop, and they day before i saw that a shop 25 minutes away had some in storage, so i pre-ordered one there as well, went there 9 am when the store opened, got it, canceled the first location and now try to find the energy to play on the bloody thing 😛

The fact that you were able to do that gets me thinking the demand for the Switch 2 isn’t nearly as great as Nintendo thought it would be.

It seems to depend heavily on location. Larger cities got a higher preorder quantity and also more actual stock, so I’ve seen reports that quite a few of them still have some. Since I live in rural Ohio every store in the area and the surrounding areas sold out of preorders, and as of yesterday afternoon they were all totally sold out of the launch day stock as well. Target, Walmart, GameStop, etc all show no availability in a 50 mile radius.

Either demand isn’t that high, or for once Nintendo actually had sufficient stock for a product launch. We won’t know which until they announce some sales numbers.

Think it is the latter, they have produced them for a good while now, and everyone who pre-ordered should have recived one, at least in my parts of the world. The biggest online retailer in my country still has 50+ machines ready to ship out

I know people are still pissed at Nintendo for their lawsuit against Palworld, and how they are forcing features to be removed. So, easy to pass on switch-2 while they destroy a well-liked game.

That and some people don’t like some of the crap Nintendo is pulling with the Switch 2 in things like it’s pricing. Though for me, both the Palworld lawsuit and the Switch 2 pricing and such pretty much made me decide to skip this generation of Nintendo.

Or that in my country it was extremely pricey thanks to Bergsala who has the distrubution rights for Nintendo. Ended up with paying roughly 750$ for the Mario Kart World version…. It does have a high demand, and everyone was sold out before launch yesterday.

I’m not sure I should worry about the size of the staples or the thin carton of the box + how close the screen is to said carton box.

MJC

GameStop was stupid to staple it, but most of the blame goes to Nintendo. Switch 2s could also easily get damaged in shipping with how thin the cardboard is and how close the screen is to the top of the box. Most companies, when doing an “open the box and there it is immediately” unboxing experience would put extra padding attached to the top of the box that comes away when you open the box. So the product is still there right away, but it’s also protected. Nintendo did it wrong.

Yep, sounds like a combination of poor packaging and a thin box. Either way, that’s a big flub on Nintendo’s part because they are going to get a decent number of refunds because of this and it’s going to be posted on the internet.

Launch experience in France : pre-ordered on the June 3rd at 1am, hopping there was a big backlog of orders to fulfil and I would get it a few weeks later (I have a busy schedule at the moment). To my surprise, I got it in my mailbox on June 5th at 10am. Apparently the demand here wasn’t as much as Nintendo expected, so there was plenty of stocks available. I didn’t have time to launch any game yet, I’m still setting up my Nintendo account. I’m already disappointed that it doesn’t work with my USB-C setup, I thought I… Read more »

As saint Total Biscuit said “Never preorder”.

Besides what would you miss out, not like the console or games are a limited run ay way.

Ah, I think some preorders are worth it, but only on a contextual basis. New, relatively untested game consoles seem to be unworthy of preorders, because of the higher percentage of errors, and instability early on. But book preorders, art books, physical game cards/discs, and movies tend to be reliable. I’ve never been burned on those kind of preorders, ever. But, I bypassed the Switch to get the Lite version, and I tend to prefer the side grade of phones, rather than their flagship phones, so in that same vein, I might wait until they release a Switch 2 “Lite”… Read more »

Not being burned yet doesn’t make it good risk to take.

The Mario Kart bundle is a limited run.
You will still be able to buy the game separately later, but the price of the console + game will be higher.

Some stores also do special deals to incite you to buy there rather than the competitors, such as trade-in offers with increased value for your old console.

I’m absolutely not in a hurry to get it, but those pre-launch deals are stuff that I wouldn’t be able to get later, so it’s worth it.
Worst case scenario, I’m disappointed, I just return it to the store, no big deal.

or,as I have said since the leadup to the PS2 launch:

“Owning a console on Day 1 is paying premium price to beta-test hardware with a limited software library.”

A worker from a shop in Poland said they had 10 NS2 items in shop + one someone specially ordered. Supposedly no one came to buy it. So much for the hype in my country.

Sounds like the first guy stole a coke and can of pringles because there is no way Walmart would give away free food and drink to a customer for that.

Surprisingly, they did. I saw many postings about it. Most people got a note explaining they were free gifts, but some were very confused because their bag was missing the note. Walmart has done this with pickup orders for a while now, though, giving away free samples of things, so it didn’t surprise me much.

Guess it really depends on where you live because the nearby Walmarts I’ve been to don’t do these kinds of things.

I haven’t gotten a new console since the Xbox one X, which I returned since I was so displeased with it. I prefer using a computer hooked up to the TV with a controller.

To be fair to Target, I think they definitely did the old “lower expectations so you can exceed them.” They should’ve shipped on the 4th at the latest, as I’m sure no one would’ve gotten them same-day, but my wife’s Switch 2 is arriving today according to UPS. Also got lucky with my local GameStop that they did not in fact staple anything to my box. Why anyone would ever think it’s okay to purposely puncture the box of a brand new ANYTHING is beyond me.

well if it’s GameStop, they instantly lowered the buy back potential with a damaged box but could resale higher!!! lol, that’s the only thing that went through my head when I first read that. Sucks about them screens though!

lol we were able to walk into our Target without a pre-order and bought off the shelf where they were many left. I’ve seen stories on both sides 😛

Ah yes, lets buy the console that can be remotely bricked, makes you pay $10 FOR THE MANUAL, and where every game right now is overpriced.

I’d rather not.

You must be PC only, then, because Sony and Microsoft’s EULAs have threatened remote bricking for since the seventh generation.

Yep. I had a pre-order at Target and Walmart in case one of them cancelled. (Target immediately cancelled my first preorder, so I had to go back to refreshing the page to get another, I didn’t trust them much after that) Walmart arrived right after 7 am, I got a coke and gross hot ones Pringles and a reusable shopping bag. Target didn’t even ship until the afternoon of the 5th, it’s supposed to arrive Saturday, and their order summary page has the gall to call this “arriving on time” 🙄 Obviously I opened the Walmart one and the Target… Read more »

The last time Nintendo was relevant to me was when the Wii came out. However, Nintendo peaked with the SNES.

Target passionately lost my Video Game business with my last preorder. A few days before launch, they e-mailed me to say that they were delaying *everything*. They would not send the game nor any of the PreOrder Exclusive Digital Codes until three weeks AFTER the game launched but they would not offer a refund. I raised holy hell and was fortunate that Amazon sent me PreOrder Exclusive codes as available but… yeah. Paying a company money to reserve a product months in advance only for that to happen? Target proved incapable of Video Game PreOrder!

We have most mainline consoles going back to the 2600. This is the first console to drop we didn’t bother with. Nintendo didn’t make it seem like it was a must have product plus all the nonsense with pricing of games… maybe one day we’ll get it, but it is not this day.

I showed up two hours before launch with no preorder, walked in, bought it, walked out.

Easiest console launch ever.

I walked into target 20 minutes after they opened and was able to buy one They ran out about 6 people after me, however.

Being able to buy a console off the shelf even months after release has been a miracle since 2017.

I sincerely hope the majority of the Switch 2s with punctured screens landed in the hands of would-be scalpers. Just because it will put them in a hilariously awkward position that is very much deserved.

According to the update on the linked article they were already given replacements.

Scalpers wouldn’t open it anyway. People buying from them wouldn’t have access to the warranty so they’d be the ones hosed.

Back in the 90’s when you bought a new system,  It was basically ready to go! But those days are gone by, so buddy, don’t be that guy You wanna be the first in line, but I say no, no, no, no, no! They won’t have near enough games, no matter how great they seem, It takes at least a year or two before they’re runnin’ full steam, Yes it’s a dirty little trick, so you gotta be staunch, kid:  Don’t ever buy a console at launch, I’m bein’ serious! Do not ever buy a console at launch! And even… Read more »
