Hoo boy

Oh crud, it’s 8:23pm and I just realized today is Wednesday. Umm…. newspost material, newspost material… lets see…

Alrighty, here’s one. I’ve been contemplating switching teams. Nooo, not that, I’m talking about computer processors.

For the last, oh, I don’t know, ten years I’ve been a staunch supporter of AMD. My first computer had a Pentium, my second had an AMD, and I never went back. And I’ve stuck by them year after year, new computer after new computer. I’m just that way, with my brands sometimes. Same thing with NVidia. I just like them better.

But I’ve been starting to gear up to build myself a new computer this summer, you know, poking my nose around what’s new and available this year, reading reviews, checking out specs. And I’ll tell you something, my head has been turned. By an Intel.

The Intel Core 2 Duo Extreme series, to be specific. Now I’ve read a lot of reviews, professional and otherwise about the Core Duo and the AMD X2’s, and they all seem to have a very similar tone: That this is the first time in recent memory that Intel has the upper hand on AMD when processors are concerned.

So I’m torn. Obviously I want the best I can get. And right now, this seems like the Core Duo. But I love AMD, but do I love them to the point of purchasing a lesser product just to stick with the name? No, I don’t think so.

Some people will say “Oh, but AMD is coming out with newer chips this fall/winter. Just wait”. That’s stupid talk. You know what, there’s always new tech coming out just a few months down the road. That’s the computer industry in a nutshell. Cutting edge today, old hat tomorrow. You could spend a decade constantly awaiting the next thing on the horizon. Ok, this one finally arrived, but wait… there’s talk of an even better chip a few months from now. Nuts to that, man.

I’m sorry, AMD. I never meant to hurt you. I wasn’t looking for someone else. It just… happened. No, it’s not you, it’s me.

I hope we can still be friends.
