Britanny and I have been playing through Resident Evil 5 the last few days, and so far it’s been a blast. I hear that the single-player partner AI leaves a little to be desired (spending ammo like it grows on trees), but frankly if a game tells me “Hey, we’re going to let you play through the entire campaign in co-op if you want to”, I’m never going to so much as touch the single player mode. And so far Resident Evil 5 has offered an extremely rewarding co-op experience.
Frankly I think Capcom could/should have gone even farther with it in some areas of the game. While it’s great to have a second gunner on hand, I’d have liked to see more instances where it really requires two people to accomplish a task. Above and beyond “I can’t move this dumpster alone”, I mean.
I think it would have been really cool (and Britanny would disagree with me) if at some point in the game they had really sent each character off in an entirely different direction. If you were forced to fend for yourself for a while, but still pusing buttons and turning levers that helped your partner progress.
I really don’t get the crying about not being able to move and shoot at the same time. Granted it’s been a few years since I’ve played Resident Evil 4, but wasn’t it the exact same situation there? Come to think of it, could you ever move and shoot in an Resident Evil game?
It’s just part of the Resident Evil genre. That’s not to say the genre can’t evolve, but it’s sort of like saying “I am shocked and dismayed that this banana tastes like a banana!” Perhaps someday science will give us a banana that tastes like peanut butter, but until then, if you don’t like the taste, don’t buy the fucking banana.
Anyway, I think the game is a lot of fun. If you enjoyed previous Resident Evil titles, you need to play it. You also need to convince/blackmail/threaten a friend or family member into playing it with you, because co-op will give you the richest experience.
Speaking of rich, you know who else is rich? Christopher Brantner. And by “rich”, I mean “getting some free stuff”, because Chris won our Valkyrie Profile Mega Giveaway contest! Chris will be receiving:
