A long, long news post

July 21, 2003 by Tim

Alright, I’m back from the convention, so you and I have a lot of catching up to do.

First of all, the guest week is over, and we have a new strip up today.

I also want to thank all of our guest week contributers one more time. A lot of you enjoyed the change in pace, and it gave me the time I needed to prepare for the convention. So thanks again to:

Squaresville for Sunday’s comic

Instant Classic for Monday’s comic

Phancy Pants for Tuesday’s comic

Theater Hopper for Wednesday’s comic

Monkey Business for Thursday’s comic

Sam and Fuzzy for Friday’s comic

Coffee Brain for Saturday’s comic

White Ninja Comics for Sunday’s comic

Now, I know you’re all wondering how the convention went, so I’m going to recap it all for you here.

I drove down to Connecticut on Thursday afternoon… the drive took about two and half to three hours. Right after I got to the hotel, I grabbed something to eat and gave Brian Carroll from Instant Classic a call. He came by the hotel, and I ended hanging out with him and some of his friends for the rest of the night. I had a blast… we played Halo, we watched Citizen Kane (which I had never seen) and generally just had a good time. Brian and friends were some of the coolest people I’ve ever met, and I look forward to hanging out with them again as soon as possible.

Friday morning I woke up bright and early, and got to the convention by 7am, which was when set-up was scheduled for. Brian also had a booth, along with Mike from Exe World and Mookie from Dominic Deegan.

We all sat there for five hours and did nothing, because the exhibition hall opened at noon, instead of nine like it was supposed to. It was fine though, because we all had a great time just talking about everything under the sun.

The first day was a little slower than I expected. My only previous con experience was Anime Boston, which tore up all previous records for a first-year con. But nonetheless, I had a great time, and I met a few Ctrl+Alt+Del fans, and sold a few posters and prints, which was lots of fun.

I was supposed to head to a Halo tournament with Brian and Mike that evening, but I ended up passing out as soon as I sat down in the hotel room.

Nothing could have prepared me for Saturday. It was incredible. I was practically drawing non-stop all day long. At the end of the day, my hand was practically shaking from drawing so much. It was awesome.

I met so many fans of Ctrl+Alt+Del and they were all really awesome people. It felt so good to meet and talk to people who enjoyed what I did. I sold a bunch of posters, a bunch of prints, and I sold all of the original art I had brought with me. By the end of the day I was working on commission, doing requests and portraits, because I didn’t have any pre-made artwork left.

It was awesome.

Saturday night I decided to hang out with Mookie, who is an incredibly cool guy. There’s no way to decribe how cool he is to hang out with.

We went to a Masquerade “Rave” that was being held on campus, where everyone went in costume and just danced all night. I didn’t dress up, but I attended just for fun. As soon as we got there, Mookie and I were chosen to judge the costime contest, which was no easy task. There were so many well-done and creative costumes, it made the decision very difficult. It was a lot of fun, though.

Sunday slowed down again, and it was a shorter day, but no less productive. I met some more fans, and still had a great time.

Overall, the weekend was absolutely incredible. I hung out with Brian, Mike and Mookie almost non-stop. I met Scott Smith from Slackerz, Shawn Handyside from Staccato, Ian and Matt from Mac Hall, I got to talk with Brian Clevinger from 8-Bit Theater for a while. Everyone was really awesome.

I am now officially hooked on the convention scene, and I want more. I’m currently looking to see if there is any possible way that I can attend Otakon in a few weeks. They have table space available, but it’s going to be tough to get down there and stay through the weekend. But I’ll see what I can do.

At the very least, you can expect me to be hitting up as many cons as I can from now on. All of the fans I met were incredible, and I want to thank them for coming by to see me.

Actually, I want to thank all of my fans for making this whole thing possible… the convention, the comic, etc. You guys are great, and I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible in the future.

You are all the secret to my success.
