Benediction

March 17, 2023 by Tim

I can’t be the only one that remembers the sting of “Error 37” ten years ago. As the masses rush Blizzard’s servers tomorrow, I figure it can’t hurt to ask for a lil’ help from the gaming gods above.

I’ll be praying for a smooth experience… but bracing for an absolute trainwreck. After all, that’s why we have a beta, right? To hopefully get that out of the way now?

Me neither.

Blizzard has lost a lot of goodwill over the years, so this one will be met with great scrutiny and caution.

What I did for Anthem: preorder, get beta access, then cancel pre-order (and so glad that I did)
Don’t think you’re going to force me to buy your product just so that I can help you test it and improve it. If anything, they should be giving a discount to testers off their purchase.

Amen. Blessed with the sign of the W, the A, the S and the D. The Up, the Right, the Down and the Left. The four directions that permeate all gaming.

Now we say the chant of power, from the book of Konami.

Oh ya i remember the aweful error 37. When i read that line I wondered if you meant it as a reference to D3 or if this new game happened to have the same # for its big error. Heh, would be funny if D4 uses the same # for its servers suck error.

I like the fact that the priest displays both the WASD and the D-pad, as if reinforcing the idea that the Church of Gaming draws no distinction between its acolytes, whatever their chosen medium may be.
What was it a certain giant tortoise named Miriel said? “All things can be conjoined.”

Makes me wonder if the Church of Gaming is specifically for video games, or if it has always existed, in one form or another, through the ages. I mean… human civilization has always had mythical beings or gods about games and chance. Lady Luck. Fortua. Hermes. Would a Church of Gaming set 100 years ago, have on its scepter playing cards, dice, and Parcheesi tokens? Are there sects out there full of dark edgelords who slink in their parents basement and murmur about the grimdark future of Warhammer? Aging fortysomethings with beer bellies who burn offerings to the ancestor spirits… Read more »

Blizzard has another game coming out? Can’t see why I should care, their recent output has been trash. The Blizzard of old that gave us classics and the Blizzard of today are not the same developer.

Can you name one company that makes games “like they used to do” without selling out?

Nintendo, Insomniac, and maybe DoubleFine depending on your definition of selling out. There’s several more, but those are just the ones that pop into my head first. Some people would be tempted to include FromSoft in that list, but if you look at their old catalog of games, you realize they did sellout once they found their shtick with Dark Souls. Although I suppose most people would consider that to be for the best. Traveller Tales is in the same boat with FromSoft, in that they found their shtick with Lego games, and it could also be argued that was… Read more »

I mean it’s debatable whether or not Nintendo sold out or not.

Nintendo was the last of the big three (Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo) to hold out against DLC, but the Switch introduced that

They introduced a paid online subscription for online play with the Switch, something they didn’t used to do.

They also entered the Gacha industry with both Fire Emblem Heroes and Dragalia Lost. Gacha is a fairly predatory monetization model that have drained people’s bank accounts.

Any company in gaming, aside from your random indie developer who 100% funds his own projects, has to one degree or another “sold out.” Nintendo’s first party DLCs have, by far, been an excellent value for what is gained. The paid subscription is annoying when they’re still the worst one with online play, but the price is still extremely reasonable; I share Family with two other people, so I pay like $12. Neither Dragalia Lost or Fire Emblem were developed by first party Nintendo. Fire Emblem is made by Intelligent Systems, who Nintendo does not own. Dragalia was known as… Read more »

well, on dragalia; my only gripe is permanently missable heroes on it (calendar gated never repeated events and banners); on gameplay it was good and gacha type was very fair (some of best units were lowest initial tier heroes)

It does depend on the definition of ‘sold out’. Mine includes “sold themselves to the big corporations”. Insomniac sold out to Sony back in ’19. Doublefine sold out to MS the same year. Traveler’s Tales is a subsidiary of TT Games, which sold out to Warner Bros in 2007. Fromsoft is a publicly traded company with ownership of stock split between Kadokawa, Sony and Sixjoy Hong Kong (a subsidiary of Tencent). Sadly, this is just the way of things these days. Good indie studios are a dying breed; they tend to get snapped up by the big fish as soon… Read more »

The way most people use “sell out” is to describe compromising your previously-held morals or principles in order to make money.

A company can’t really be a sell-out because they exist to make money. Furthermore, most really don’t have what you’d call “morals” or “principles.” They have governing philosophies, sure. But I’d never say that, say, Atari “sold out” because you have to have principles to begin with.

A company like Mojang – bought by Microsoft, but still basically run with the same core intentions in mind… probably up until the Marketplace came out. Then, I’d say, they “sold out.”

That’s because Blizzard doesn’t exist anymore except as the second part of a name. It’s Activision-Blizzard or simply Activision for short..

It’s hard to properly test for several dozen million people all trying to log in at the same time and the errors that can occur.
Errors that might happen 0.01% of the time are unreproducible and random when you have a thousand testers but when you have 50 million people it’s suddenly happening to 5,000 people who are all pissed and rush to Twitter, TikTok, and Reddit…

I dont hold my breath for D4. I used to cherish every new Blizzard release, but for the last few years they’ve been a predatory live-game-service-p2w demon. The Diablo Immortal only cemented this view for me. Having said that I will be keeping an eye on the reviews.

If the masses (hehe) Are successful at casting the demons out of a demon-based game does that result in a 404 error instead?

It Would be funny if Bobby chokes on a cherry though.

I heard about it but managed to dodge it because I didn’t play the game on day 1. Given how many online games have had this, even if I’m dying to play it I’ll just wait a week or two for things to settle down.
