Door Number Two

September 12, 2025 by Tim

What can I say, I enjoy a good mid-afternoon nap. I don’t ever really get them, and I don’t get particularly tired mid-day, but there’s just something about an afternoon off that makes a nap irresistible. Almost without fail, every time I arrange my schedule so that I can spend the day enjoying a new game without distraction, halfway through the day my brain says “if you’re not doing any real work today, why don’t we just power down for a little bit?” and boom– doesn’t matter how much I love the game/how hyped I am, the nap always wins.

Signs of being young are wanting to play when you should be sleeping.

Signs of being old are wanting to sleep when you could be playing.

As they say, I have never been so offended by something I 100% agree with.
On the bright side: Silksong is still winning over the nap for me 🙂

I’m in my 40s and don’t have/don’t want kids and so I don’t have the urge to nap nearly as much. I imagine it’s because kids are pretty much parasites that feed off their parents, draining their vitality, until they are adults themselves. lol

im in my mid 40 and your comment is needlessly rude and immensely arrogant. i dont have kids, i stay home all the time. a nap can be needed due to all kinds of factors. stress over irl situations, not feeling good, sudden changes in weather. in my case, pains in my body caused by damage done, and my area goes from 80s in the day to 50s at night throwing me off on a biological level, and a problem sleeping. you could have worded your comment to not insult anyone who has kids. a lot of people who game… Read more »

It was a joke, yeesh. Nothing more, nothing less. Didn’t the lol at the end of my post pretty much point at that? Nothing arrogant about it and nothing warped in my head about it.

Calling people parasites is not really a joke in most circumstances….?

It never ceases to astound me how some childless people have warped their mind into seeing children as a separate species. My dude, you were a once child. I was a child. Everyone was a child. If you think of children – the literal propagation of our species – as separate entities from their eventual adult selves (let alone as parasites), then you still *are* a child. Or a narcissist; the overlaps are many. Then again, perhaps you wrote without thinking. Perhaps, you’re not reflecting a fully-fledged opinion, but instead trying to conform to an ideology that is sadly not… Read more »

The term is child-free. Everyone was once a child. Not everyone should become a parent. I am child-free, and it’s a conscious choice. While I wouldn’t choose some of the wording the original guy used, I can see the point without offense. I love my life without kids. Kids annoy the shit out of me, and I recognize that inflicting me as a father on them would be cruel to both of us.

The venom in your commentary is telling though. It’s curious why his reasons for living his life in his way are so offensive to you.

It was a joke, that’s all. I have nothing against kids myself, and even babysit my niece and nephews periodically, but don’t want to have them myself.

My dude, the entire last paragraph consisted of me giving them a break for their opinion. Whatever you think about my ideas, if that’s “venom” to you, I have to assume that didn’t read the whole thing, or that I touched an exposed nerve. We all do that sometimes, but I don’t think you can expect me to pretend like that’s reflective of what I was saying. I mean, “don’t pretend like kids are a separate species” is a far cry from “you should have kids”, but that seems to be what you thought I meant? Well, I guess I… Read more »

Or maybe it was a joke, and you are overreacting? It was a crazy thing I said and the lol at the end was clear indication that it was a joke.

Seeing what else you wrote, I can see you weren’t mean spirited. But I hope you can see that adding “lol” or labeling something as a joke (without a little more context) doesn’t really change the meaning people are going to take away from what you’re saying, know what I mean? Like, if someone makes a mean spirited joke, it’s still mean spirited, even if it’s a joke. Tone is hard to read online, and depending on tone that lol could mean a lot of things. It could mean something innocent like this case like “yeah guys, I was just… Read more »

Nope. The real parasites are those who choose a “child-free” life of plenty with no responsibilities but still expect to have a nice retirement financed by exactly the kids they so dispise.

Yeah, as I’ve gotten into my 40s, the urge to nap after work has gotten stronger and stronger. I remember when I couldn’t nap even on the rare occasions I felt really tired and wanted to. Now half the time, 5pm rolls around, I walk down to my living room and pass out on the couch before I know what happened. At least with working from home I can work some gaming time into my lunch break lol.

PRE release. Now that silksong is out and broke all the online stores in the day of it’s relsease and also that there are loads of publishers/devs complaining that team cherry are selling the game way to cheap AND that players are complaining the game is too hard…. that definitly is loads of material for a new comic.

I’m over 50 and I still nod off while playing a game sometimes. I’ll wake up and find my character standing in the middle of the road or dead at the bottom of a canyon, or whatever.

For me, it really depends on if I did something strenuous. beforehand and if the game I’m playing is more mellow and/or repetitive. I.E. if I’m playing Runescape and am doing a farming run, I’m more likely to fall asleep if I’m already tired from doing yardwork.

The ‘Creeper wake up boom’ in Minecraft is now more common for me than the ‘falling out of bed’ jump scare in real life.

I get the double whammy of ‘how did I get in my bed’ (on minecraft) followed by ‘Wait? How did I get on the sofa?” (As I realise Minecraft isn’t real).

I don’t want to nap. I don’t like to nap.
But if I am not doing something physical in the afternoon, the brain just shuts down. I hate it.

It’s called being old (middle-aged).

If I disregard my age, after BL3, any other activity wins out over playing BL4. An afternoon nap is the best activity per se.

It’s probably for the best that naps are winning for now. Borderlands 4 is not optimized well at all for launch so waiting to get it (or in Tim’s case play it), makes sense. I pretty much never preorder or buy AAA games at launch because they in general tend to be buggy and/or unoptimized messes.

By most accounts, Borderlands 4 is a true return to form. I’m looking forward to playing it. Once the performance has been fixed and Denuvo is patched out.

Yeah. That’s age for ya. I often enjoy a little snooze at meal times, at my desk, meetings, phonecalls, MS Teams-meetings, traffic lights…*

Over 50’s Forza means at least one of us will go quiet on the mic and be found parked somewhere as we lap them.

(*Never drive tired.)

I find similar thoughts cropping up, but I drive them back with the realization that I’ll have plenty of time to sleep when I’m 6 feet under. Sleep is eternal, gaming time is limited when you work two jobs and have family responsibilities lol

I have literally fallen asleep with my laptop sitting, well, on my lap, with the game running. It’s probably one of the reasons I have so many hours in Steam logged.

I find a 20 minute afternoon nap makes the rest of my game time that much better. I’ve never been a fan of Borderlands, though, so this wouldn’t even be Sophie’s choice for me.
