I don’t quite remember it but they might have died in an accident? I’m pretty sure I’m mixing up the relatives. It was mentioned when he started to date the delivery girl.
Scratch the above. Ethan’s parents are alright they just moved out of town. His sister was killed though, that’s why his parents don’t live in the city anymore. Ethan talks about them on this page – https://cad-comic.com/comic/fish-in-the-sea-p16/
IIRC, I think there are three stories here. The Robot Formerly Known As Copplebronch was told that the explosive device was deactivated. Ethan and Lucas were told that the “no-kill” switch was transferred to Scott, who just set it on auto-confirm. Scott and Lucas discussed later about setting it up to an automatic perimeter.
Even if the automatic perimeter is disabled, Scott still holds the kill-switch, and the only thing he sacrifices by triggering it is his friendship.
Oh that last line is a good[sad] point. I forget if Ethan knows that Scott kept the kill switch for himself, but he never knew about the perimeter for sure. Probably wont be long before that facade comes down.
I’m not sure, but I think Ethan doesn’t know about the killswitch control being transferred to Scott, and thinks it was turned off. I might be wrong, though.
I’m not quite sure what universe you live in, but when feet = outside doorframe and arms = outside doorframe, that usually indicates someone’s stepped past the door.
I’m not sure if this is outdated information, but I believe civilian-level GPS is accurate up to one meter, and that’s assuming you’re outside. When you’re in a building, it can get hazier. I’m sure Scott would have defined an area slightly larger than the storage room, to be safe. That would mean, anything directly outside the storage room for a meter or two would be a ‘gray area’ where he COULD go off, depending on how accurate the signal is.
Then again, this is a fantasy world with talking robots, so GPS could be accurate to the millimeter.
I thought the area was the building, not the backroom. Like, they can technically leave the storage room, but it’s a very bad idea. Actually walking outside is what would kill them. So was thinking Lucas was just bothered by the near blowing of their secrets. But if our robot IS confined to the room…that would have been a very close call.
Tell Zeke (for the lack of another name so far) ? I don’t think he will, the ‘bot would probably feel betrayed (and rightly so), and Lucas should be able to figure that out, so I rather expect the discussion with Scott about turning it off, as it nearly went off for no good reason (since Zeke wasn’t going to escape, or harm anyone, etc).
The GPS in this story operates with plot accuracy. This is about drama, not physics.

That definitely looked like he stepped in front of the storeroom doorway. No boom though? Locator must not be SUPER accurate.

My hat’s off to you, Tim. Between last week Friday, and today, and then this whole story segment, that’s some fine foreshadowing. I can’t wait to see how this plays out.

This is just a perpective issue. As you can see in teh 2nd panel, Not-ormaybeyes-Zeke is at the doorway. Still not out of the storage.

I’m placing my bet on the chosen name being the name of Ethan’s sister, give him some serious bad feels

There’s an assumption everyone posting seems to be making: That Zeke-bot hasn’t detected and disabled the device already (bust the reciever and he can go wherever he wants to). He’s supposedly quite bright and he did work for a criminal ‘mastermind’ so maybe he’d think of that. And maybe it doesn’t have to go blam *just* when he steps out of the storeroom. That might have consequences for Ethan (well, he dies a lot so maybe not so much), Scott and Lucas. So maybe Scott’s code starts a wee timer once he breaches and if he’s out more than 30… Read more »
no hope for recovery
I’m guessing Lucas reaction was two folded here:
But he can’t tell him that
And dont go out in your metal undies
I don’t think it was so much about #1, especially given Ethan’s nonresponse.
Lucas is the only one right now who both knows about the perimeter, and doesn’t want it to go off.
Very subtle…
I have short memory, do we know something about Ethan’s mom in this universe? (Or in the former, for what matters)
He’s a replicant. It’s quite possible he never had one.

Thanks for looking that up.
Shouldn’t he have exploded?? Or is it the shop front door that’ll set off the bomb? 😮
And follow up enquiry, does Ethan know the bomb is still active?
Ethan does not know the bomb is still active.

He was one step away from explosion, because he didn’t actually step outside the door

Maybe it allows some timeout, or some tolerance? Or maybe the GPS is actually not that accurate.
GPS sometimes pinpoints you several buildings away. Scott is no fool, he’ll account for that.
I’m pretty sure Scott said that the boundary was the storeroom

It may be accurate – it may be far off even outside if there are e.g. walls nearby. I’ve seen both on a single trip.
If you can’t get satellite signal from wherever you happen to be, might be quite inaccurate.

I went back through the archive. It is just the back store room. Buddy had a real close call right there.
I think Lucas is going to tell him before the end of the day.
