I’m really enjoying surviving on Arrakis. I’m also incredibly impressed by the sheer determination and ingenuity of some players to find ways to inflict grief in the absence of direct PVP.
Building bases in chokepoints to prevent vehicle traversal. Building bases around precious resources/water. Drive your buggy up to someone’s door and remove one of the wheels, can’t get in and out of that door, now. Need to park your ornithopter to scout for resources? Better hope someone doesn’t pop out from behind a rock, claim the land under it and then build a structure around your expensive toy, trapping it inside forever.
Absolutely impressive levels of architecture-based warfare.
That sounds absolutely stupid. I was on the fence after seeing a few trailers, but that helps make the decision.
My rule of thumb for me is if other players have any capacity whatsoever to be an asshole and if you do not have absolute 100% total control over who you might run into, I just don’t play it because one in ten people online if not more tend to be like this.
The only reason Helldivers 2 is such a big win for me.
That and if you play on console, you can just add assholes names to the block list and never end up in a team with them again.
Good work around. I prefer the ninjas installing electrodes to their nasty parts related to the crap behaviour and thoughts… it would then be a self-managing situation.
“They’re not all like that, but most of them are… and all it takes is most of them.”
Even in city builders, you’ll find gatekeepers and critics and they snap at new people… It’s the strange and mentally deranged desire to be a crap human people to other human beings that didn’t do anything to them. There was a time (2000-2010) where I could find people on line and they were about 85% normal to pretty great and the other 15% was a mix of jerks, but not really persistent ones… and then there was those. Now, most of the time, I get hacks and awful trash in comms and so on… Then again, the world being what… Read more »
Took me too long in life to realize that those who do this kind of griefing, are just bully-victims trying to self-compensate by finding ways they can get away with harassing others while safely cowering behind a screen
Safely cowering behind a screen.
…and a base.
Had some hostile teenager came on to a TeamSpeak for an Armed Assault II (with mods) that were run by some fairly serious about their rules. They’d let kinds in, but not talking on comms until they are 14. Well, said hostile teenager was F this, F that, do this atomically unpleasant thing next, etc. A senior moderator got wind and said: “You, child, you are not behaving in accordance with the rules.” <insert the kid shooting his mouth at everyone until another player said “Kid, come back when your balls drop…” and that just had the teen just livid…… Read more »
The best part of the high seas is that I don’t share the booty.
Yep some a…hole also blocked my favorite aluminium farm route with a building the other day … luckily he was gone after 2 days.
You know, that your favourite whatever route is poof out of existence at the next Coriolis storm? All resources (except water) is randomized. I had an iron and power cell node next to my base. One week later it’s just one granite and nothing else 😀
This aint fully true, yes the spawnpoints variate a bit in hagga basin and of course in the open desert, but the same resources are always in the same area. My route is a few kilometers long and with a buggy takes maybe 15 minutes to farm for 2000 aluminium ore. Doesnt matter that way much if the ore is exact the same spot or a few meters further or closer than last circle.
There hasnt been a big storm yet Jedi, First one is today.
You know you can store your vehicles in the vehicle backup tool, right ?
Not if they are loaded with a ton of resources.
Also not if it’s anything larger than a Sandbike
You can store the scout orni too.
aaaand I’m out.
I play for fun and relaxation. I meet enough assholes in real life, thank you very much.
This is 100% of the reason I don’t play MMORPGs. I have considered, so many times, Read Dead Online or GTA Online. Really love those games. (Esp. with my new killer machine.) But… people. Ooof. Also, I had a friend at work who left almost every day, promptly at 5pm. “Where are you going?” “WoW raid tonight.” I do NOT want that kind of obligation. I like to open a game, be able to shut it down immediately if something comes up. (I also lean away from games where you have to get to a “save point”. GTA is like… Read more »
Those games aren’t MMORPGs
His point is still valid, unlike yours.
I think his point is to let the other person know they are using the term “MMORPG” wrong, so they can avoid making the same mistake in the future.
That mistake could end up embarrassing him, especially if it gets pointed out to him in real life. I think it was good to tell him.
same. why i avoid the online scene
War, wat never changes
Yeah, that’s basically the reason I don’t play multiplayer games at all – the other players. 😉
I only play friends I made through work, Uni, or other nerds. That’s enough. Some from some mailing lists when that was a way to share ideas for games and such (long time back).
Them I like and that kinda leaves out the MM part of MMORPG. It’s usually small team stuff like NWN or similar.
Life is too short to waste energy fighting the jackasses in the world (unless its a real war).
I’m with the non-buyers; I don’t want to have to carefully find a path through the game to avoid all the schoolyard bullies actively trying to ruin everyone’s enjoyment.
I’ve personally run into none of this.
Same here… it’s very isolated incidents. It is far from being a rampant issue.
I’ve run into in minor ways. Never had a time where I couldn’t get somewhere though. Just had to go around.
“Schoolyard bullies”. That is the most apt description I’ve heard for this. And it’s 100% accurate.
Begone, Fortnite; you have been bested!
Those people should be IP banned
Yet more reasons to not play more Funcom garbage. That’s it. No more notes.
It’s not Funcom, it’s just humanity as always being a massive asshole and getting kicks out of causing suffering to other people. Crap like this has been around since the OG days of WoW, nothing new.
As someone else already said, the number one thing that ruins any multiplayer game is other people.
Blocking stuff goes even further – I remember reading tales of drive-by carpentery in Ultima Online. A group of players would quickly build tables and chairs around you to block you in.
The couple times I’ve encountered this, its been more of an annoyance than anything genuinely obstructive. Thankfully I have yet to encounter the vehicle tread removal griefing, but that seems easy enough to counter with the full-refund structure demolition. Turn door into wall and move door one panel over.
Saw that behavior with a 1800s survival sandbox game called Heat. Never fails to astound the lengths some people will go to in order to compensate for how pathetic they think themselves to be.
I hate cliffhangers. Wonder what will happen next.
This might be the last deciding factor for me. I can’t stand games that let people do this.
sounds like hell
Man people are having a visceral reaction to this. I’ll admit I was irritated when someone built across the ramp to the anvil, but to refuse to play an otherwise fun game?
I am gonna guess that most of the ones who refuse to entertain griefers are the ones who can only play for limited amounts of time. Like parents, people with full time jobs, etc… They don’t have endless amounts of time to be dealing with other players being able to troll them in such time consuming ways. They’d rather spend their time with something else that’ll bring them more joy in the limited time they have playing.
This^ I’m a parent. I work two jobs. When I finish work, and have only 1-2 hours in a night to either play a game, or watch a TV show / movie, I have to choose very specifically what will entertain me the most, and what I’m in the mood for. If I’m able to lose everything in a game due to griefing, or if I have to spend a good portion of that limited entertainment time on getting around another player-caused problem, I will rapidly find my stress and annoyance rising. When I just want to play to relax… Read more »
Exactly this. I don’t play games to be annoyed by others. I don’t mind playing with people that just want to have fun and enjoy the game, but the second it becomes about making the experience less for others… I have better things to do. There have always been jerks (I remember at the first blizzcon running into some idiot hogging one of the computers available to go into WoW so that he could grief people in a plaguelands… it was like wtf, you are here in person to celebrate a game, and this is how you spend your time?)… Read more »
we dont all have time for this
I don’t know much about this game, but it sounds like it’s got potential, and just needs an anti-griefing mechanism in place, even if it’s something as simple as a forced refresh of current builds in the world from other players. I remember having to deal with players on Elden Ring, for example, who placed their messages on the bottoms on Ladders, or on Sites of Grace, so every time you tried to use them, you could only click on the message. In some cases, they were glitched so you couldn’t swap through options to actually use the other things,… Read more »
aah the same annoying mechanic as ark and why i stopped playing that.
Looks like you can set up private servers? So this game has a way to turn it into s “single player”, right?
Defeats the purpose of the game then. We want to interact with others just want asshole protection for things like this
The private servers only privatize a single zone.
Okay it sucks, but that is a pretty sweet tower.
The nice thing is that building decay is a thing and the idiots will be gone after a while(even if it might be a couple weeks depending on how dedicated they are to taxes), but this is also why I insisted on a low population server, to at least minimize the damage.
Lmao, sounds just like ARK back in the day. This is the way.
Wow… Some aspects of this game sound awesome but the endgame is mostly just pvp so I doubt I would enjoy the game. Glad I didnt try it but I still hope they manage a great game as it has potential.
