I probably watched that clip of Cyclops ripping off his visor twenty times in a row. For me that imagery connected to so many feelings… reading X-Men comics growing up, Cyclops being my favorite, the 90’s cartoon, wishing Marsden’s Cyclops had gotten justice, knowing that when Scott rips off his visor like that it’s usually because things have gotten seriously fucked…
My kid got nothing from it. He has none of the prerequisite nostalgia. Clearly I must work harder to make him relive my childhood verbatim.

Sounds reasonable. I’m right there with you 😀
shoop da whoop
I’M A FIRIN’ MAH LAZARRRRRR!
Aah crap. Tim, dare I ask how old your kid is already ?
At the risk of confirming again how old I(We) already am(are).
Please don’t. I’m already suffering from an existential crisis from my age. ðŸ«
Cool
There is this really old SF movie that introduces a methodology that could be applicable here: A Clockwork Orange.
For the evil trolls: please don’t take me seriously.
Albeit, I have seriously considered it after my daughter’s response to a Star Wars movie was … ‘meh’, can we now watch another episode of The Good Doctor (me dying inside with a smile plastered on my face)
Ah yes, The Reverse Ludovico Technique. I keep trying that on my wife to enjoy all my pop culture, but alas the results have not been promising.
I was at a Friday games session. I made some reference to Star Wars (IV) and one of the younger coders said “Dude, I wasn’t even born then…” and the nature (and correct) result was “I can’t talk to you anymore.”….
It’s like how I missed the Apollo landing on the moon. You’re one of the people that you saw it and then there’s those that never will.
yeah ! homeschooling for the win !
And teach him how to play an RPG that will happily tell you the world will kill you and fights are one of the fastest way to end up dead…. and where the phrase ‘level appropriate’ doesn’t parse….
Check his reaction to Darkseid’s omega beams. Might be a DC fan.
Some might argue, that is even worse
Animated DC stuff? Top Tier. No one can compete. Live action stuff? Avoid at all costs.
Dare I say it… I take the kid’s side.
When I was a kid myself, X-Men comics weren’t available here, and I barely remember seeing the cartoon on TV, either. As such, my real first contact with them was the live action movie from year 2000, and the cartoons don’t incite the levels of excitement, that Tim seems to expect (I tried watching them on some VOD service, probably Disney+, only one season was available, but I’m not sure if I’d be interested enough to watch more, anyway).
Tim, please don’t kidnap me for reeducation…?
The beatings will continue until the appropriate level of awe is reached
I feel you… I’ve been trying the same with my Daughter for 14 years.
Sailor Moon, Grendizer, Captain Future, He-Man, Star Wars, Zelda, Metroid and so on and so forth. But I keep at it. Now I’m trying to get her into Babylon 5. Results: lukewarm so far.
On the flip side, discovering new things with her is always amazing. She’s really into Expedition 33: Clair Obscur. Well, it helps that Maelle is almost a clone of her 😀
My daughter was into Claire Obsucr when I played it and then for her birthday we got her a Rog xbox Ally X so she could have access to the xbox ecosystem. She booted the game up during that time of the month and apparently wasn’t aware of Sophie. Cried so hard she hasn’t gone back to play it again.
I’ve had better luck. My 4 year old is now watching Digimon with me for the second time. After we just finished both runs of Thundercats.
He hasn’t been QUITE as hooked on the Ninja Turtles as I would like. But he likes the cartoon and LOVED the movie, and now Casey Jones drives my Thundertank every night while shooting at Slythe, Monkian, and Jackalman.
in 20 years you can strike back when Skibidi toilet 6-7 trailer drops
Your kid can’t relate because he lacks the context you possess.
Gawd, I feel you soo much. I had the same reaction from my 9 and 11 years olds. I was like “Wait what?!” and went on a ramble of why that moment is insane, with the two sentinels walking in the background… God am I SO hyped and I really thought they would be as well. They did watch the MCU and a couple X-Men movies, but yeah, the level of nostalgia we have simply cannot be grasped by them :’)
Wow. Another Cyclops fan? I thought we’d gone extinct! He gets so much hate these days that for a long time I thought he didnt’ have any fans at all except for me.
I always loved cyclops growing up, but I can understand people turning on him. We grew up with him as a hero and then the comics turned him into a villain. I don’t like that version of him but I still like the good guy versions of him.
I feel this. My kid expresses a lot of interest in modern games and get hyper fixated on everything about certain games, except actually playing them. She will start them, play once, talk about it constantly but go back to roblox and never touch said game again. I think I failed by allowing her to start gaming in modern day. I understand the parents controlling the content their kids access, except instead of choosing games with specific content, I should have been lining up classics through the ages and made her play her way to modern games.
It’s a weird thing with stuff like this where they’re obviously trying to appeal to older fans with the multiple callbacks and appeals to nostalgia but at the same time, keeping things aimed to a young audience in terms of what gets shown and general vibes.
That’s ’cause appealing to older fans gets them Today Money. But they want Tomorrow Money too, so they’ve still gotta keep that target locked on the young.
So I enjoyed X-Men of the 90s the same as Tim, and seeing the clip in question tbh I’m on the opposite side of this. My feeling was ‘ok nice callback’ but with thought/tone being a solid warm vs lukewarm. The reason though was the fact all these movies making the call backs like that, that they’re not trying something new or fresh, it feels like they dont have creativity or desire to do something new. I’d even wager many just do a ‘tick box’ to do callbacks without knowing the context of these things for purpose, and I guess… Read more »
I had this EXACT interaction, but my wife was in the son’s position.
I feel this, even though I know the backstory, I really do not care about any of the “superhero” universe stuffs! Yeah, it can be fun and all, but it is not worth my time obsessing over it!
Nerd Dad. At least your not a toxic sports parent… right?
Meh. I’ve never understood the fascination with cyclops or wolverine honestly. I had the same reaction to that scene, and I’m in my 50s having grown up on comic books.
Star Wars is gonna get pretty awkward if he ends up rooting for Anakin from Episode 1 all the way to their redemption in Episode 6.
So instead of being introduced to Darth Vader first, there’s a whole generation introduced to Anakin first.

The fact that Cyclops was your favorite makes me like you more. Cyc was(is) always my fav. I saw that scene in the trailer and thought “oh shit, I might care about Marvel again”.
I often feel the same way about my son…he just doesn’t seem to get what is awesome about the things that I find awesome…despite being forced to watch as much of it as I can get him to sit and watch!
Everything Marvel and DC is just so “meh” now
Well, let us see if he gets excited over The Real Adventures of Johnny Quest or SWAT Kats. If he doesn’t, then you need an intervention and pull him out of school.
Or he’s been reading X-Men comics since then and that has pretty much eliminated the enthusiasm, especially in a post-Krakoa era where it’s back to the same “Defending a world that hates and fears us” repetition.
Tim, it’s like you and I are the exact same parent!! This entire post is *exactly* what happened with my own son. The only difference is, I’m pretty sure my son is younger than yours.
If you are fascinated by cyclops without his visor, it’s worth watching the Pete Holmes videos on YouTube. He plays an objectively asshole Xavier downsizing the xmen via performance reviews. The content however, and the outtakes, are gems. One sneeze and cyclops could vaporize dozens, all because he refuses to put a sports band on his tinted sunglasses.
My oldest didn’t like me showing him Legend of Legaia, Grandia 2, Suikoden, … “because they looked too simple/ugly/2D/…” so he went back to playing Roblox 😖
Totally agreed. I don’t get how my kids can not be down for good Marvel stuff. I was a serious X-Men junkie in my youth. Some of the movies were iffy, but they were still X-Men so I get all sorts of warm fuzzies watching regardless. I never liked Cyclops, but he’s still part of the group. Now Magneto on the other hand 🙂 As for Marvel not making good stuff now… shiver, yeah, the attempt to transition from a bunch of serious talent recognizable actors into young unknowns has been a flop. They’re not compelling, and it completely disengages… Read more »
The Millennials and older Z’s are likely to be the last generation who still believe in whimsy and wonder… not this manufactured factory cranked-out of soulless drivel.
One of my fav panels is Cyclops telling Sentries to get off his lawn, take off his visor, and the next page is just a single full page of the colour red
For what it’s worth, Tim, I thought it was cool.
I still remember my daughter’s reaction upon seeing Star Wars: A New Hope after playing Lego Star Wars. “Why did they make such a bad movie out of such a good game?” I’d hoped to segue into watching all the Star Wars movies with her, but she hasn’t touched a Star Wars movie since.
Show your son the Quicksilver scenes
Cyclops is like my least fav xmen character so I kinda get it lol.
Its because he has to play the heel a lot of the time to Wolverine, who’s the fan favorite.
tbh I didnt really care either and I grew up with xmen too, but cyclop never really was my favorite
To be fair, I’m not a Cyclops fan so I’m not geeking out over it, but it is cool so that reaction seems to be on par for those not fans of Cyclops like Tim’s son. Cyclops really did get the short end of the stick in the X-men movies really and I can see that doing permanent damage to his kids’ development in liking Cyclops. So, if Tim wanted his son to be a fan of Cyclops, it’s his own fault for not showing him X-men content where Cyclops was badass.
Tbh marvel and dc content has been trash for 10+ years, so “meh” would be the appropriate response to their content.
