Secrets, p14

October 30, 2024 by Tim

One week left on the Volume 2 Kickstarter! I want to stress that I am not intending to print a huge number of extras. I will cover whatever is ordered, plus some buffer in case of damages. But if you want the books, I’d recommend getting them now, especially for anyone not in the US.

Get shot to death, or get to wear a cape. Heroism is all about making the difficult choices.

NO CAPES

Breakaway collar. Capes are a useful tool in an arsenal, and if you’re worried it’ll get caught, a simple clasp at the neck meant to open when enough force is applied is perfect.

And yes, I do get the reference

Capes are dubiously useful. They’re basically raingear. Unless you give the cape magic abilities (it can deflect blades! gunshots! death lasers!) it’s just five pounds of drag and three-ish feet of leash. Not something you want to fight people in unless you’re Superman and it literally doesn’t matter.

Golden age comics pumped out caped heroes because a cape could make a person look dashing and heroic, not because they served any practical use at all. The only superhero I can think of whose cape has a practical use is Batman, and that’s because he uses it to hide.

Chris Nolan’s version of Batman had the cape made from some sort of memory retaining fabric (which I know is non-existent, but so are powers and self aware robots… though possibly not much longer for at least one of them) so it could basically become a hang-glider which was pretty cool. If it was also like Teflon coated or something, it actually could help deflect bullets and provide an extra layer of protection. But until Ethan becomes less of a do-first-think-later accident prone walking disaster – the “getting caught in things” risk probably well outweighs any benefit a cape could… Read more »

One counterpoint, a cape with a quick-release that can be loosely wrapped around an arm can provide a decent level of padding against blunt impacts, and a surprising level of protection against a slashing blade.

Ethan clearly doesn’t intend to use his this way (and doesn’t really need to when he’s sure his powers are there) but it’s *a* practical use for one. Material also comes into play; a wool cloak is obviously gonna have more bulk to it than whatever, presumably thin and lightweight, synthetic fiber he currently uses.

Wait, was the wrong comic up earlier? I swear this looks different than the one I read this morning, unless I dreamed that, which, given how groggy I am in the morning, is entirely possible.

There was a different comic up briefly with Ethan and Lucas talking, with a punchline of all the “Qualifications” Ethan has if he needed another job. Trying to be vague in case that’s Friday’s comic that got uploaded by mistake
