Secrets, p14

October 30, 2024 by Tim

One week left on the Volume 2 Kickstarter! I want to stress that I am not intending to print a huge number of extras. I will cover whatever is ordered, plus some buffer in case of damages. But if you want the books, I’d recommend getting them now, especially for anyone not in the US.

As a very wise costume designer once said “No Capes!”

Unless your cape serves a function of protection or maneuverability. I.E. Batman’s cape usually has several practical uses for him to have a cape. Depending on the comics, movies, cartoon, Batman’s cape is flame resistant, bulletproof, and/or can even be used as a glider. I’ve seen him use it to help protect civilians.

Get shot to death, or get to wear a cape. Heroism is all about making the difficult choices.

NO CAPES

Breakaway collar. Capes are a useful tool in an arsenal, and if you’re worried it’ll get caught, a simple clasp at the neck meant to open when enough force is applied is perfect.

And yes, I do get the reference

Maybe an automatic one, in case you can’t reach it. Sort of like the skiing clasps (used to be? I haven’t done any skiing in years), letting your feet go if sufficient force is applied, so you don’t break your legs or something.

As I read it, it is ‘automatic’. If enoigh force is applied it’ll get loose. So if it is caught in a jet engine for whatever reason, it’ll snap loose from the neck without further input of the wearer.

Just don’t get caught in it yourself 😉

Capes are dubiously useful. They’re basically raingear. Unless you give the cape magic abilities (it can deflect blades! gunshots! death lasers!) it’s just five pounds of drag and three-ish feet of leash. Not something you want to fight people in unless you’re Superman and it literally doesn’t matter.

Golden age comics pumped out caped heroes because a cape could make a person look dashing and heroic, not because they served any practical use at all. The only superhero I can think of whose cape has a practical use is Batman, and that’s because he uses it to hide.

Chris Nolan’s version of Batman had the cape made from some sort of memory retaining fabric (which I know is non-existent, but so are powers and self aware robots… though possibly not much longer for at least one of them) so it could basically become a hang-glider which was pretty cool. If it was also like Teflon coated or something, it actually could help deflect bullets and provide an extra layer of protection. But until Ethan becomes less of a do-first-think-later accident prone walking disaster – the “getting caught in things” risk probably well outweighs any benefit a cape could… Read more »

And in the Gotham series games, we’ve seen Batman use a combination of his grapple to get height/momentum and his cape to glide around. Sure it doesn’t beat his vehicles in speed but it does allow Batman to be airborne and more mobile than he has been in the past.

Ironically the shape memory retaining fabric is reality. Nolan tries to get a lot of reality or reality adjacent technology where he can. The movie shows that only a few thicker strands react to the electricity, which the cape isassumed to be draped over like a parasol. That way it acts like a cape, and with electricity applied it’ll stiffen in a certain shape, making a parachute of sorts. As far as I understand the materials behind it, only the parachute part is truly unrealistic.

One counterpoint, a cape with a quick-release that can be loosely wrapped around an arm can provide a decent level of padding against blunt impacts, and a surprising level of protection against a slashing blade.

Ethan clearly doesn’t intend to use his this way (and doesn’t really need to when he’s sure his powers are there) but it’s *a* practical use for one. Material also comes into play; a wool cloak is obviously gonna have more bulk to it than whatever, presumably thin and lightweight, synthetic fiber he currently uses.

Capes with good design can draw attention to places without vital organs. They can obfuscate your body and make attacks from behind less likely to hit a critical spot. Useful for heroics. Pointless in everyday life.

Capes also serve pretty well as improvised bucklers to deflect incoming fencers. So quite useful if you live in renaissance Italy. Not sure how many rapier wielding villains are about here though…

Wait, was the wrong comic up earlier? I swear this looks different than the one I read this morning, unless I dreamed that, which, given how groggy I am in the morning, is entirely possible.

There was a different comic up briefly with Ethan and Lucas talking, with a punchline of all the “Qualifications” Ethan has if he needed another job. Trying to be vague in case that’s Friday’s comic that got uploaded by mistake

I don’t know if this is how it’ll play out but I see Ethan going out and getting back into the groove of crime fighting, then in some epic moment he gets killed. Lucas in a rage finishes the bad guy and rushes home to find the apartment empty and he hasn’t respawned. Falling to his knees he cries out in anguish only to have the bathroom door open and Ethan walk out flushing the toilet.

To be fair, a cape confuses Ethan’s outline to make gunshots harder to accurately aim. Maybe Ethan was shot less because the cape did its job?

Cloaks are protective pieces of clothing, capes are flashy distractions. Cloaks are resilient and durable whereas capes can be DETACHABLE!
