My own head cannon for Ethan is that he’s a goofy person, but he knows when things are serious. If you look at Ethan at his best, like here and when he reconciled with Scott, it’s when relationships and real life things are on the line. When it’s how to promote a game a game store, he lets his goofy flag fly, but not when it’s important. Sure that can be really extreme, but as others have noted there was nothing really holding him back from extreme attempts at silliness. It would be easy to get that mindset, even Lucas… Read more »
Not really. I think we’re all just swayed by what 1.0 Ethan was, and so whenever we see him being a goof, we’re like, “Yup, same old Ethan.” But this is the guy who agonized over whether he intentionally hurt the Troll. Who saw and defended Zeke’s humanity. Who taught him empathy and morality. Who confronted Scott after seeing a gang slaughtered and shared in grief. He has his silly moments, but that isn’t all he is. And this is something Ethan’s been sitting on for a while, ever since he lost Emily because he couldn’t keep a secret life.… Read more »

Ethan being deeply in touch with reality??? what possessed him!
I love the character development. Keep’em comming.
I think a very interesting twist in the new Ethan and Lucas format would be if immortality was what made Ethan goofier and more careless, and rediscovering mortality sobered him up a bit.
This makes the various X Simulator games he’s been playing make all the more sense, to me. He’s so afraid of not having a life that he’s trying to get one, but because he feels so vulnerable without his powers, he’s not doing it by getting out in the world. He’s doing it where he feels safe.
It’s probably been a lot of introspective time for him while he’s been trucking and mowing lawns.
And if he was efficient, he’d put a mower under the rig and get twice the work done!

Might be deep, but that’s a lot of legal liability that could hit them to reveal them *now*, not to mention the Troll, the Surgeon, and a whole lot of revolving street level criminals (as Deathblood points out) who can come after them.
And registered but secret heroes probably still don’t get a pet robot.

Oh wauw. This human who has pretty consistently shown a deeper intelligent and/or enotional side together with some dumb eccentric behaviour has said something deep! I’m so surprised!
Or you know, he’s been a complex intelligent being all along. That he’s weird and does some stupid stuff should not make us forget that. He’s shown his emotions and intelligence more than enough. I’m more impressed by what is said than who said it.
Your tone is a bit edgy but I agree. The hurr durr ethan is being deep is a bit silly. Labelling someone as “the funny guy” and then always treating them like that’s all they’re good for is insanely toxic To be fair, I understand that most people joke in good faith, i.e. they don’t actually think Ethan (or others like him) are just dumb but it does make it difficult for him to show emotion and depth because of the expectations of people around. I many times have issues with being my true self because I’m afraid of this… Read more »
Had to reply to this Yeah, we all know Ethan can be serious, we saw that in his discussion with Scott in Brannigan. He’s clearly capable of being emotional and serious, but as we also saw with his recent obsession with simulators, he’s generally goofy. I’m very similar, a very goofy person, maybe not to the extent of Ethan, I don’t like being serious, I have trouble being serious, I’ll probably be tempted to make a joke at the end of this post. Part of that is that I want to be seen as just the “funny guy” and not… Read more »
To be fair, when characters say deep things, the comments will discuss how surprisingly deep the statement is. And, they will be surprised how deep it is, even if the character is serious. In the end, we aren’t just surprised comedic characters can be deep, we’re surprised that comic writers can set up properly deep situations well in a way that hits us. And, we feel that even when the same author has done it before because even authors that are good at it take time to set it up. If there is anything to be said about those kinds… Read more »

Which villain was the master again? Was he the one who made zeke?
GASP! If this discussion ISN’T their reality turning upside down, I don’t know what is! 😀

I have been reading CAD forever, but I have to say how impressed I am in how well you mix the long form comics, with a page by page delivery. Each page has its own story and punchline/conclusion. but it doesn’t take away from the overall story you tell. It is so impressive and cool!

Now I’m convinced that (1) the Troll’s serum worked, and (2) his immortality and immaturity were somehow both tied to his powerset.
Did Ethan get kidnapped and a shape-shifter left in his place? ;-P

I think one of my things about this is that Lucas was very anti-Ethan seeing Emily because he might have an ‘oops’ moment, yet when Lucas finds a guy he likes he keeps pushing things a little further and further along. And the entire time, Ethan’s like “You do you, bro.” And then when Lucas is the one to potentially out them, Ethan is consoling him. It’s always been in character for Ethan, but I love that he doesn’t even think to point out Lucas’ hypocrisy and instead just fully supports his friend. I just hope that Lucas can acknowledge… Read more »
However, let’s admit – in everyday’s situations Ethan has a tendency to, how to put it, suffer from momentary lapses of judgement form time and loss of focus. From time to time. Lucas, on the other hand, is completely different.
So it is not surprising that usually it is Lucas who acts as a safeguard / adult and kinda “imposes” on Ethan some course of action, not toher way round.
Thats unexpected deep from Ethan …
I would even say this is CAD 1.0 Ethan at the end of his growth shining through…

I’m sure the next thing out of his mouth will remind us of the good ol’ Ethan we know and love.

A harsh life on the road does that to you.

It’s a good time to be retrospective. After all, those virtual trucks and lawn mowers won’t run themselves! 😅

Yes, also has a name “Eugene”.
