I finally think I got it. I have been wondering why they were so reluctant to register, but I now understood that by registering their identity it’s no longer a secret (obviously, so no idea why that took me so long). It’s in a database and based on previous dialogue something bad has happened to those in that database in the past. It’s been implied that police force itself did something dodgy, but regardless – the information is out there and it can be breached.
Right – is it a public database? Bad
Also: it is a database: how often do those get dumped on the internet?

Ooh, is it time for Lucas to have a flashback? For instance, about the previous time he was in a relationship with someone and it went so horribly wrong that he had to form what he calls an “emotional callus”?
I’m all for it if it means more backstory for characters I like.

I love how it’s Scott who’s smirking while suggesting to Lucas about letting someone in again. Sounds like he’s starting to come to terms about losing his sister. The Scott from years ago would have never suggested such, I don’t think.
A hah! So now we are getting a backstory. About the woman that betrayed Lucas so thoroughly that he became Gay as a result and this being the linchpin between CAD 1.0 and this. Well played!
I don’t think there’s any linchpin. Tim said it was a clean cut from 1.0 to 2.0. Obviously there would be some similar characteristics about their personalities but in no way was this some sort of continuation of the previous story, just further down the road.
I know that I shouldn’t respond to the bait but they’ve named the person that MAY have caused Lucas’ relationship hangups or, at least, is the last person Lucas went on a date with more than once.
Their name is Aaron which is a name that indicates “male”

Well, there’s still a chance for Ben to be BOTH, so…

Something just occurred to me. Cops, generally, get into it to “protect and serve” their community. What if Ben is also a vigilante, when he’s not in his (main) uniform?
Some of the more ridiculous speculation is that he’s Deathblood (too small) or even a villain. Any such reveal would distract from the perfectly valid conflict he provides as a regular cop.
Oddly I think of the time involved. He is a full time cop, those are some long hours already. Toss vigilante on top of that? And he still has time to date?
His super power better would be time control to fit enough hours in the day.
In fairness to myself as one of the Deathblood theorists, he did show up in all red on their first date and, as a cop, he would have access to where major crime scenes are suspected……plus (and this is probably long-term exposure to media speaking) anyone who is this perfect-seeming almost always has a dark secret.
I mean, go back and look at that French Toast. That is the type of French Toast that Doctor Doom would make.
The most fitting dark side for Ben is that he has a kink that Lucas can’t abide. Simple, down to Earth, and relevant to characterization already established.

Scott asking the real questions.
Said it before, I’ll say it again. I really love this 2.0 version of him and not the 1.0 mind-controlled douche he was. This Scott is not afraid to get Lucas and Ethan’s backs no matter the enemy.

I find it odd how much Scott in this universe both infuriates me and endears himself to me when I so thoroughly hated him in the 1.0 universe.

Scott lost his fiancee. She was Ethan’s sister.
OH! Right, derp. I got it backward. 😅
Still, my point still stands, perhaps moreso.
Scott’s line in panel 1 is such perfect snark.

Even if that linchpin existed (and I don’t think so), I’d say Lucas had his fair share of bad relationships in CAD 1.0 already
People don’t “turn gay” you’re born as who you are. That can be a very broad spectrum. IDIC.
I’m sure bisexuals can adjust their preferences based on good or bad experiences, but Lucas seems strictly gay.

That “anyone this perfect-seeming almost always has a dark secret” is the part that concerns me about this storyline.
Especially since the name of the arc is “Secrets” and the storyline arc almost NEVER ends up being about what you thought it was about…
