Ah, but this isn’t a fair comparison either. As the gas actually gets used up, you have to buy more gas to keep driving but the game you originally bought isn’t actually depleted (if you bought an actual DISK), you still have the disk you first paid for.
But if the base-game was paid for before you downloaded it, you’re screwed.

In one sense, you also “use up” the content of the game when you play it. Once it’s finished, you have an “empty game”, unless someone is creating more content for it (addons, MMO, DLC,…) and then it make sense to pay for it, doesn’t it?
