Thats not exactly an imminently fatal wound. Without KNOWING that he can respawn and just ending his own suffering, he’s gonna have to fight for his life. Go to a hospital, endure hours if not days of pain, and IF it’s survivable, perhaps be told that he can live but now he is paralyzed from the abdomen down due to spinal injuries.
Forcing him to choose a chance at respawning or living as a cripple.
I don´t think the troll will just leave it at that. But even if, Ethan respawns to the last “healthy state” his body deems viable, so I guess he could die of old age, paralyzed, and respawn as a healthy 30 year old (how old is Ethan?)
Hours if not days?
I would have thought a wound like that is more in the realm of weeks to heal.
I know that painkillers exist, but I think you’re still feeling some pain and heavy restrictions in your movements.
And if the spine was hit, I would think it would have been much harder to go through with a basic metal tube that is not sharp or anything.
But I might be completely wrong, I’m neither a doctor nor a professional stabber.
I also doubt that the troll has the strength to get it through the spine, but even moving a disc slightly can paralyze you and ist painful as heck Talking recovery. We’re talking hours of surgery, sepsis (there’s a lot of unhealthy stuff leaking into your blood when your guts have been perforated) so we’re probably also looking at parts of the colon being removed. Best case scenario: Somehow missed the spine and managed to get through the colon without bigger damages (shoving most of it to the side) and also missing other organs we’re still talking about weeks of… Read more »
My post wasn’t completely comprehensive. There is a lot left out otherwise it would be too long that people would lose interest. It would take hours if not days to die. If he is to survive, yes, he is in for a life of suffering, which was the point I was trying to make. As for not likely breaking his spine, while I agree, I also argue that a normal person doesn’t have the strength to completely impale someone’s abdomen and exit the other side with a blunt object, either. So I’m not ruling out spinal damage. Plus, if Ethan… Read more »
I have a Ph.D in biochemistry and did research at one of the best hospitals on the planet, and you are so incredibly far off on the recovery time. This is on the order of at least a year to being DOA at the hospital. It’s hard to tell from a cartoon, but while it doesn’t look like he hit the liver (dead in a manner of hours if punctured, it’s highly vascularized! deaths during surgery with a sharp scalpel and decades of medical experience from blood loss aren’t uncommon) there are any number of fleshy bits that could cause… Read more »
I don’t think that is going to happen. I imagine the troll will throw Ethan in the pool or Ethan will keep fighting to prevent the troll to do more harm and they both die in the process.
It comes to my thinking that there must be a lot of maimed, crippled, or the like heroes and heroines. Most of them can’t regenerate, most can’t respawn.
Being a hero (when you are dealing with other supers) probably has a short active life.
You know, that sounds like an interesting comic series, or at least a one-off storyline. All the supers who got hurt and didn’t heal. Maybe their healing factor was suppressed, or their luck finally ran out. Whatever the reason, the comic could visit them in their various lives. Rich guy lives in a large McMansion, with in-home caregivers. Various garden variety ‘my superpower wasn’t that I was rich’ types are in a special care home for the super-powered. Maybe some live at home with family. IDK what the ‘point’ of the comic could be, but it sounds like an interesting… Read more »
That wound is fatal enough that Ethan could bleed out pretty quickly. Gameboy is not really going to have the time to pause Ethan to stop him from bleeding out I think. Not with the Troll there.
Nah, Ethan is going to fall into the vat of mystery goo, either by the troll letting go of the pipe, or the troll pushing him in. No way that stuff getting into a gaping wound is going to spell anything except certain and imminant death.

great, a bunch of options now !
Analog does not have his powers BUT the Troll push him in the vat and it kickstarts upgraded powers for our favorite hero, and the Troll get’s crazier for it.
Analog still has his powers and handle the Troll.
Analog does not have his powers, and Gameboy has to freeze him to save him long enough for him to be put in medical care (but maybe he has to let Elijah go to do so ? Can he freeze multiple big things at once ?)
Option 2 : the wound doesn’t look like it’s going to kill him in a few seconds, so Analog will have to suffer through until he gets a fatal wound and find out if the power works or not.
Option 3 : I haven’t read the whole comic archive, it’s there any indication that Gameboy’s power would affect the injury such as stopping the bleeding, or simply prevent Analog from feeling pain until he gets medical help?
Actually, are the people staying conscious while they are frozen, or do the time fully stop to their perception?
Yeah, even if their conscious during the ‘pause’ you have to wonder if they are paused in an injured state, that the pain you are experiencing is paused at that same level and you are conscious and experiencing that level of pain during the entire pause.
That wound is pretty much through the exact center of the abdominal cavity, and it’s a blunt force wound meaning it would have shredded anything it came into contact with. The abdominal aorta runs right through there and, based on the amount of immediate blood shooting out ahead of the pole, was likely hit. A shredded abdominal aorta can cause someone to bleed to death in literally SECONDS from the amount of blood that courses through there to supply the entire lower half of the body.
Gameboy having to freeze Ethan would add the most drama to the situation and would be the most realistic szenario IF the troll and his lackeys escape now or at least don’t further attack Ethan.
Which is a 50/50 at the moment. I doubt the Troll can resist to gloat at Ethan for a few minutes.
I suspect this is the Troll trolling Ethan that his powers are gone when the Troll knows his “cure” was fake.

Well, once again, I did not expect any of this.
Two observations:
1. I don’t have much experience, but stabbing human body side to side is not very easy, especially as the rod isn’t even sharp. The Troll is quite strong, I think.
2. I used to believe the whole serum was a hoax, but if so, killing Ethan makes no sense. Either my assumption was wrong, or the Troll is sacrificing his latest prank in order to summon even worse one, which is terrifying.
Oh, he absolutely has to have super strength, and not just because of thrusting a metal pole through a human body. Take a look at pages 14 and 20. There are no loose metal bars on the catwalk. That is a yellow railing bar, and at no point during this fight did any of the supers do damage to the railings, so he snapped that railing bar off himself! (Or he has acid powers and melted the bar off.)
Yeah, powered strength makes more sense here. I’m pretty sure even with that it would be more likely to shove someone forward with a pole like that than impale them, but that would probably depend on the magnitude of strength.
or, you know, he prepared some beams with loose screws.
Seems that the troll tries to think of as many things as possible beforehand.

This is why you kill the villains when they can’t be reformed. It’s like Batman – how many people have the villains he puts away ended up killing because he wanted to keep to his principles of not killing. If you can keep them locked away indefinitely without issue it’s fine to keep them alive. But if people escape like this and it’s not unheard of it’s time to realize that prisons can’t do their job and villains are too dangerous to let live.
Honestly, if you have the ability to keep them locked away indefinitely without issue, you may as well kill them because at that point it’s pretty much the same thing.
its the idea that you can reform criminals.
In most cases that can be done, in extreme cases it cant.
As for a death penalty or deathblood judgement, it makes you no better than the criminals you are punishing.
Even if you want to ascribe to that ruthless philosophy, this is only the first time Troll’s actually broken out of jail. (first time was in hospital when he presumed comatose). It’s not a repeating pattern yet, way too soon to make that ‘prisons are useless revolving doors’ argument.
Maybe so, but that shouldn’t be on the superheroes to carry out the execution. What if they screw up and kill an innocent? What if a supposed hero executes innocents under the ruse of serving the greater good?
Failure to kill such villains is a failure of society not passing the necessary laws in support of capital punishment when such cases warrant it. Don’t blame Batman for Gotham’s failed justice system.
To be fair to Batman, it’s the justice system that is failing, not him. The Justice system is just throwing these villains into a crappy prison instead of executing them for all the murders they commit. Not only that but you’d think they’d lock them up in a better prison after the first few escapes.
Arkham’s not a jail. It’s a mental health institution. The supervillains there were declared mentally infirm and unable to stand trial. They don’t have a sentence, they’re released when a medical board says so.
And of course, if Batman did kill the Joker, the “fan”base would double down on the “Batman’s a billionaire whose hobby is beating up the mentally ill! And now he killed one for sport!” nonsense.

You know, I was thinking about the Troll’s superpower removing serum that he used on Ethan. Even though it’s most likely BS, I was thinking if it wasn’t, it could’ve removed Ethan’s powers in that he would no longer create new ‘save points’ to respawn from with this current ‘life’ of Ethan’s. So, he would respawn to his previous respawn point before the Troll hit him with the serum and thus be back to normal with his powers.

Everyone’s focused on the troll and the stabbing and whatnot and yeah okay that’s the cliffhanger fine. But god dang, Elijah is the lamest speedster. Its still a pretty brutal wound. If the pole hit a major artery on the way through (and there are several around where he was stabbed), then Ethan could bleed out before the fight is over.
HA! Pole in yer back!
Honestly, did not see that weapon choice coming at all. Will have to go look back at the comics to see if a random piece of the railing is laying about.
Now we see Ethan die, and learn that the entire run of Analog+ D-pad up to this point was just a prequel and grown-up GameGuy is the real protagonist.
That’s such a heroic choice by Ethan. he doesn’t know if he’s immortal or not, but he decided to turn his back to the Troll, who could throw him over the railing, or just ram him through with an iron rod. He decides helping Gameboy, stopping him from taking a risk he thinks is necessary, is more important.
Can we appreciate between all the chaos just how good Ethan is in handling speedsters?
And Respawn in 3… 2… 1…
Lol same leg. Tripped him up with irony.
Am I the only one who is wondering where the Troll got the pipe?
It’s the same material as the railing (some also visible in background), so either there was an unused piece lying about, or he removed a piece from the existing railing.
Shock can be deadly. Just because could survive that impalement, even for a day, doesn’t mean they’ll definitely survive even for a few minutes.
Don’t miss the next issue, Game Boy and D-Pad #1!
I look forward to seeing if the Troll will use the leverage to force Ethan into the vat.
Finally!
well, that’s a hell of a cliff hanger!
well, at least now we’ll know
AAAAAHHHH! You got me! Literature gut-punch! Thanks for the great story, keep it coming!
damn, troll is strong, just pushing a steel pipe through someone would demand massive strength.
Roll credits and CAD 3.0 is starting next month!
Wow stabbing with a pole without a sharp or pointy edge at the end? That had to take some strength to pull off.
It’s a pipe. The end is inherently edged, even if it’s a little blunt.
He’s so fast he can seemingly be in three places at once painting a detailed poison trafficker logo, while having a conversation at that, but has absolutely no ability to respond to a regular ol’ strength dude yeeting something into his way? The first time is whatever, he’s not exactly practiced for combat of any kind so hey, learning experience: straight lines at uncontrollable speeds with predictable targets are a bad plan. But again? Seriously.… Read more »
That was bugging me even more than Ethan leaning full into the blunt force pipe of.. whatever that is. :\ This is really getting season 8ed
So who else is going “Oh thank god it’s about time” ?
The End.
Should have brought a Kevlar for the stomach as well. Or wear chainmail like some cops do just like in medieval times. Damn, this sucks for Ethan. Since he is afraid of killing himself in case he cannot respawn, he is in for a lot of pain, struggling to stay alive. But he saved the kid, so good job! Love how Gameboy can stop time not for one but many things. Super useful once he has some martial art in him to help him in battle or tools which could be used to bind and then stop time, would have… Read more »
And now someone will say “I dont think thats a lethal blow”
Honestly. The speedster weakness being glue is hilarious
First time it was glue. Now its an oil slick
With everyone talking about the massive plot twist, can we just take a moment to appreciate how unerringly accurate Analog is with his gadgets?
Umm.
That’s a pole.
There’s no sharpened tip.
Is the Troll like the HULK or something? It would take a MASSIVE amount of force to just ram a blunt pole all the way through someone’s body.
You’d be surprised how readily the end of a pipe will bite through plywood, and human tissue is considerably less resilient.
Physics has left the chat.
Well thats one way to find out if you can respawn still. That pole doesnt look sharp enough to do that.
How did he do that? That armor has protection even in the none chest piece, and that pipe has no tip to use as a piercing. To have do this would require super strength.
