I have this same problem with sandwiches. Specifically, open-faced sandwiches. Because they aren’t actual sandwiches. They’re just bread with stuff on top.

I used to be fine with the Webster dictionary definition of an open-faced sandwich – a piece of bread with food on it. Then someone challenged me with a slice of buttered bread, and my life has never been the same since.

Nah, butter’s just a condiment-slash-ingredient, not a proper foodstuff in itself.

Here’s a tip … in places where Open-faced Sandwiches are common, they vanishingly rarely called sandwiches or anything remotely similar, but rather some local corruption of “Bread and ‘stuff’ on”, and its often not consider proper/correct if its on toast (although that opinion is more ‘muddy’ the longer south in Europe you come)

The American/English name for them is ‘merely’ the closest approximate that they could figure out.

Is it because loot boxes are not gambling, or because they should be?

Soup is quite literally whatever you through in a pot to boil. The base liquid (which can be most anything you want it to be) leaches out the flavor. Soup can actually be made from ingredients that have gone slightly off, they are put in a mesh bag to allow them to be removed easily afterwards. Stew meanwhile has very little liquid, it’s mostly just the ingredients own gravy, and is simmered.

I think cold cereal counts as soup, so it does not have to be hot nor boiled.

It is a kind of sauce, it can also be used as the base of a stew.

I’d like to point out the Chair Sculpture Paradox: If a chair is called a piece of art is displayed at an angle so that one cannot sit on it comfortably, is it still a chair? A chair is defined primarily by it’s function, which is turn defined by it’s form. An upside down crate is technically a chair, as one could sit down comfortably onto it. However if a chair is placed on an angle so that one could not sit down onto it without experiencing discomfort, is it truly a chair? If something is incapable of functioning like… Read more »

“A chair is defined primarily by it’s function”

I don’t think that’s necessarily true, though.

Primarily, not entirely. There are plenty of exceptions. However, to bring up a chair generally refers to something that is comfortable and easy to sit on without causing pain- an aspect generally determined by it’s function.

Returning to the ‘Open faced sandwich’.
Primarily a danish thing, though swedes also is famous for their ‘Smörgåsbord’. Danish version is called ‘Smørrebrød’ – let me hear you say ‘AHHHH’.
Immense amount of varieties, usually on rye bread or butterfried toast, and eaten with a good beer and a tall glass of snaps.

And guys? – American style sandwiches was also invented by the british 🙂 Besides, we danish are a bit appaled by british and american lunch foods.
