It’s basically a logic v. emotion debate. Because of how obstinate and stubborn internet communities (especially MMO communities) can be, the argument is eternal and never ending. If you look at the top left corner you can see the “73rd weekly” bit, which in a sense is an extra punchline
Item level on equipment wasn’t always so freely visible (or at all visible) in WoW. An addon came out to rank players’ equipment: Gearscore. Lots of players forming pickup groups would use Gearscore to check players, typically filling their groups with players that had higher GS. It tended to spark debates about whether GS was more important than skill. Of course, the big reason GS was used as the go-to measuring unit was that it’s impossible for you to be able to measure a total random stranger’s skill.
