You have to wonder, with his respawn thing – is it actually his consciousness, or a perfect copy of it? Does he die (and the consciousness of the current Ethan disappears) every time he respawns, or is the consciousness somehow transfered?
If the former, seems like if he knew, he probably wouldn’t be so keen on dying constantly.
From an outside view there would be no difference. From his perspective he would die and a new person with the exact same memories would take his place without ever knowing that the previous Ethan died.
The game SOMA exploits this topic and creates interesting dilemmas based on it.
That would make sense, then instead of going through the agony of having to peel glue off of his face, he can just shoot himself and respawn. The far less painful option in my opinion.
“It Stays” is a little more modern, and safer than spirit gum. I’m curious if it’s incidental his mask looks like a console game controller when it’s falling….lol
Given the fact that the usual solution for about anything consists of Ethan killing himself, should he ever lose his superpower without him noticing, he will find out the truly hard way.
Looking at the comments I love how everyone immediately thought the same thing: “I bet there’s a sane way to glue that on, but since it is Ethan he will use super-industrial glue and respawn to get it off”

Ok this trend about “gluein'” the mask is good enough to evade the Bowsette thing… Oh my god, what have I done? Tim! NO!

Other substances Ethan tried include but are not limited to: scotch tape, packing tape, staples, cement, Elmer’s glue, nails, thumbtacks, and using magic marker instead of a mask
Thank you for explaining how the mask stays on. One of the great questions of super heroes answered.
What sort of glue and how long does it take to set?
I’m more concerned with how to remove a glued-on mask.
…ow.
For him? Kill yourself and respawn.

What’s the functional difference?

The afterlife would be full of various copies of him if they are all different people. 😉
Difference is that real Ethan would die long ago and nobody knew about it.
The same problem with teleportation.
Is he the man in the box? Or in the one in the prestige?
(Although, I always thought the answer to that for Robert Angier was pretty cut and dry)
Oo, good movie reference! That’s always the first thing I think of with those situations!
Same stuff used by brides / ladies in prom dresses?
For normal superheroes or for Ethan? Cause I can easily see him using some industrial super glue to keep it in place.

I’d see Ethan use industrial glue, but I would recommend using spirit gum; the type LARPers use to glue on elf ears and such.
How do you think dancers and gymnasts keep their leotards from slipping into their butt cracks?
I wonder how often he “accidentally” glued his eyelids shut.
I wonder how often he killed himself to respawn to redo it when that happened.
When he respawns he’s wearing the same thing.
Probably he uses cyanoacrylate…
Normally, I would guess Spirit Gum, the same stuff they use to attach fake beards and mustaches.
Is this made out of real spirits or do they just make it out of ectplasm?
Spirit gum. It’s what cosplayers use to hold parts onto their bodies such as mustaches, hairlines of a wig, etc..

“No, no. I think you nailed it”. HAH
So Ethan nailed it to his face.

No he won’t. He’ll be dead.
Yes, that kind of was the point.

Magic Marker worked well until he realized it said “indelible” not “inedible”
Nice, Fallout in the background!
