I know I keep ripping on Nintendo for this shit, but honestly… fuck ’em for their history of litigious nonsense. It has legitimately colored how I view them as a company now.

Yeah. I used to be such a Nintendo fanboy, but they lost me, and now they gross me out. Glad I’m not the only one.

Part of me doesn’t get where this comes from, they had no issue with platformers or competing 3d ones. But tho throw a ball at an animal is too much? never mind that Digimon has almost equal vlaim on Palworld… I shouldn’t have said that out loud…

Quite simply, it’s because Palworld finally gave people what they’ve been begging for from Pokemon for decades, to pretty amazing effect. Open world, real time battling in a world that isn’t a bland pile of shite, a huge map to explore that actually has interesting stuff going on, base building that isn’t just some tired gimmick, and a progression system that feels impactful. That’s to say nothing of the utter hilarity of giving a tiny monkey a machine gun and letting them have at it against the bad guys. It was and still is a breath of fresh air, and… Read more »

Also, Pokemon has been making Nintendo and GameFreak huge truckloads of money, in significant part because they had no real competition in the video game space. Palworld changed that, and Nintendo and Gamefreak want to stop it.

They have been fanatic when it comes to IP for ages. Most console producers look at hacking, roms, r34, pirating etc and go “Hey it increases our fame and we still run a profit….”, but Nintendo starts foaming at the mouth at the notion of anyone doing anything with their content that they didn’t have in mind.

Don’t forget that brief moment where they thought they were also entitled to any kind of monetization on stuff like game-play footage on Youtube…

Yeah, if people would stop idolizing corporations, that would be good. They only have a backbone if it fits into their image and if it pays better than not having one.

They foresaw this reaction, and have chosen to instead enact draconian measures against emulators and distributors of them. It’s annoying and it’s gonna cost Nintendo a lot of goodwill over a protracted period of time.

It’s easier for them to sue smaller companies for crap than creating good games.

You think Nintendo is bad? Check out the Games Workshop legal offensive from earlier this year. They sued hundreds of folks who dared to come too close to their IP’s. Admitantly, some were really pirating their IP to sell knock off products. Some however were selling things completely unrelated – like somebody who was selling something for a Warhammer battlemech from Battletech game.

This whole issue is just a matter of bot farming internet points. Palworld literally turned Pocketpair into a multi-billion dollar corporation.

GW has been like that for ages. They famously sued Chapterhouse in 2010 for selling models for units in armies that GW didnt even make themselves, and when they lost, instead gutted their own game by removing every unit they didnt have an in-house production line from the army books. Then they proceded to try and copyright the chevron symbol and put a trademark on the name ‘space marine’.

Was surprised they didn’t file a cease and desist at least. So if you want to copy anything Nintendo, slap a dhs logo on the screen as well. Apparently it’s a salt circle for them or something

Nintendo lost me when they announced Switch 2 and told me I’d have to rebuy my copies of Zelda BotW to play on the “new” console. It’s sad I have to let Zelda and Metroid go but I’ll get over it.

True! You didn’t have to buy the game again, you just have to pay to keep playing what you already own, on the new console. Because why bother with backwards compatibility when sucker fanbois will keep paying for each game to play what they already own!

At this point, companies like Nintendo have dispelled all pretense that patent and copyright exists to protect the economic stability of artists and other creators. Patent and copyright only exists as a means to own the hard work of artists and prevent them from being able to function without the support of publishers.

And more importantly, as a means to bully smaller companies out of business before they can potentially become competitors and steal any of that market share. That’s what patent and copyright law is about anymore. While the fundamental purpose of protecting creative works still functions, to an extent, the primary use of IP law these days is to squash any potential competitors.

You know that big rule in aviation? Aviate, navigate, communicate? I think I can guess what similar logic Nintendo uses. Spoilers: it involves the word “litigate”, a lot.

ip as a concept is a problem, though. generally used maliciously when it counts, very rarely helped the individuals, authors, artists. corporations on the other hand and patent gathering ones, oh… there is no reasonable basis that anyone could own ideas, not anymore then air or water, and yet, here we are.

This is the sort of thing that would get business licenses pulled. I’m not joking, Secretaries of State in the US, and not just in the blue states, would tear up their ability to do business in their states for something as radical as this. They would have to in order to get ahead of the mob with torches and pitchforks.

Been reading for at least 10 years and this would be the first comment… and yea, the indignant nature (to an extreme with nintendo) of those with the means to sue over any possible slight is disgusting. At this point, I hope they lose market share for their overreach, but honestly… will it really even make a dent? How does a society bring a corp of their size back in line?

On one hand I agree with hating large corporations and wouldn’t exclude Nintendo…
On the other hand my neurospicy brain is dismayed at how many demonstrably false anti-nintendo false statements are being accepted as fact 🤷‍♂️

Oh well at least there’s always MS, Steam, Sony, GW, WoC… oh wait they all suck too.

Interestingly enough, that one wasn’t Nintendo. It was actually Square Enix that sent a Cease-and-Desist letter to the developer behind Chrono Resurrection (I just looked it up). Nintendo has done many, many things to justify their own criticism, certainly, but let’s not blame them for things other publishers did instead.

I keep saying I want a different company to patent turn based combat to keep them in check. They can keep their capsule monster concept but someone having the option to mess with the battle mechanic of pokemon would shut them down each time they wanted to be jackasses because someone else made money off an idea they didn’t even come up with.
