I’m banking on the more direct approach. Cort is a man of few, but strong, principles. That can eventually lead to a confrontation.
Perhaps he still idolizes the man he perceived him to be, not the man Jack actually was, as evident by the photograph. Speck also seems irreverent about the circumstances, continuing to live and work with Cort.

After we had seen young Cort without his scar in 9.16, while he had it when the comic started.
Did Cort get his Scar when he killed Jack or was it another event?

Another (typical) possibility is that Cort made some mistake and Jack died to save him, so now Cort feels responsible for Jack’s death.
“well placed self-blame” is also an option, I’m not putting Cort above negligence. But yeah, it looks like that wound is still too raw for it to have been a deliberate decision.

It’s fun to finally read the comments outside of Patreon. It felt lonely over there, not as many other readers to discuss this chapter with. Even page by page. (amazing chapter by the way, read it about a year ago on the Starcaster Chronicles Patreon, but I’m kind of craving for knowing what’s been released since then, maybe I should subscribe again to catch up).

The Starcaster series has to be the best stuff you’ve done, though the Zeke series is close.
This is a cross between Ian M Banks & Azimov, with a touch of Heinlein.

First time he’s dropped a reality bomb like that that she hasn’t looked disguspointed at him about.

I am honestly really glad that this is his backstory.
i get so sick and tired of the same old “i had no choice” or “my tragic past drove me to be an outlaw” storylines that has been done so often that it has become a cliche and the new 0815 backstory by now. having someone become an outlaw cause its fun is honestly really refreshing nowadays.
What a twist!
Now I feel like Nyrah and want to hear the rest of the story!
There were lines Jack was ready to cross but not our “hero”…or was somekind of accident
Or did Cort let a villain go, that villain killed Jack, so Cort thinkks its his ow n fault?

dont go and give tim ideas for stuff he doesnt even know he might need ideas for……
I’m pretty sure the script is written so far in advance, “giving ideas” is not an applicable concept for this.
It was, but Patreon users get to vote what happens. I think this was voted on about a year ago iirc.
Patrons get to vote on the future. The past is already written 😉
PROGRESS!
Money on “unfortunate accident” or “misplaced self blame”.
People don’t tend to keep a photo of the man they found necessary to murder.
“well placed self-blame” is also an option, I’m not putting Cort above negligence. But yeah, it looks like that wound is still too raw for it to have been a deliberate decision.
