There was a vote awhile back yes. No clue what the results were, but I know there were a few very vocal people complaining about everyone constantly voting to run and not trust squid face. Personally, I think the best choice would have been to just get let the Mimion melt the damn thing. Then the Federation would have no reason to continue hunting them, and neither they or the Dranglaex would ever be able to get their hands on it. Starcasters are literally the kind of thing that *nobody* can be trusted with. On top of that even under… Read more »
Careful – you appear to be applying normal human logic(no way he’ll get to keep it) – this is a story controlled by a writer / artist – logic isn’t really in the wheelhouse and there is already foreshadowing regarding a father/son relationship that’s bound to tug at the feels.
The Federation has two Starcasters, and both are on military members. La’ni didn’t start out as part of the Federation military, but Danton might have.
Can the Mimion melt it? It’s an alien artefact that can terraform planets, so making dangerous substances is pretty much a given. Additionally it can channel the power of a star without showing any harm to the device. You could maybe sever an arm with enough minion juice and jettison it into a star or black hole, but it’s a big if. As suggested earlier, your arm starts to heal before you can chop it off with a knife. It probably neutralises toxins and acids as well. The best way to deal with it is throwing cort onto a sun… Read more »
When it looked like Cort wasn’t going to make it and they were backed into a corner, she asked Speck to melt it. She didn’t say ‘try’ to melt it, she specifically asked him to, so presumably it can be as I would trust her to know about that kind of thing.
Also we must read that even she, once or twice has told she is not very sure about starcaster full power…
As well…his brother choose to die from famine that just link himself with the starcaster and become somekind of undying guardian (as the Last Crusade Templar).
So, still we don’t really know what the starcasters can do or suffer.
Her brother was linked with it, the starcaster doesn’t eliminate the need to eat.
Also she never asked Speck to melt it. When they were backed into the corner Speck refused to try the starcaster on as he didn’t want to find out if they could melt.
Probably closer to “if we can convince them that we don’t really want anything to do with this and would gladly hand over the WMD if we knew how, then theyll probably leave us be once they figure out how to get the WMD off my arm” but that doesnt flow as nicely in a comic.
It’s simple, amputate the arm vs being killed to get it from him. They have impressive robotic replacements etc…

The argument is sound. It’s not a *good* option, in fact it’s probably an awful one. But the odds probably place it as the “least bad” option available.

I noticed that the biome / environment colors for this page look similar to the two preceeding pages. Could Cort and Company be on the same dirt-farmer planet as our presumably doomed farmer people from the previous two pages?

Starcaster is some of your best work to date. More, Please?
You’re in luck! There’s two more issues still to come after this at least! Patreon is currently starting a brand new issue.

Cort’s spent half his life running away from the responsibility of having been a high ranking federation officer
So what could make him stop being an amoral schmuck who’d rather doss around the fringes of space doing bad jobs for bad people rather than anything else?
Sure he’s almost certainly a good person under all the “Freedom” instinct and general apathy, but where’s his reason to do anything but loiter on the sidelines faintly cheering the Federation on, on the general principle planets shouldn’t be blown up?
I think he’d rather be a hero, but he knows that ship sailed a long time ago. I view him as a bit like Han Solo at the beginning of A New Hope– ruthlessly pragmatic.
I still feel he’ll find some novel way to use the Starcaster, and the Federation will want him on their side, with the Starcaster on his side.
True, but it’s also traceable by the federation. They’d be switching from a t-shirt with a target on the back to a semi with a bright, well lit up one on the hyway.
I like that ‘borrowing’ parts 🙂
Not everybody like to share their toys..
When a MIMION asks you to share something shiny, you may feel a sudden and inexplicable surge of generosity.
Indeed. Even I would share my cookies, or hub caps!
Yes but … plot twist, he might hug you for your generosity
Nah, this one reSPECKts the boundaries of personal space.
Just make sure you set it on the table and back up a step or two.
Was there a vote here about if they trust or run off? (Not wanting to know the result if there was, just that it seemed to be setting up for one.)
IIRC (and without spoiling anything) there was no vote here, the previous vote was regarding what to do with Quel/His Ship as they spotted him.

I was going to say he’s applying normal human logic to a government but you make a good point too.
You say that, but at the end of the day Real Life has all the most unrealistic things.
Simply because Real Life shenanigans doesn’t have to make sense or cater to a reader’s sense of disbelief.

The vote was at the very end of issue 10. Choices were surrender to the Federation or continue trying to run and hide on their own.
They’re not going to steal, The’re going to Strategically Transferring Equipment to Alternate Locations.

I assume that last part will be true
They did outright already state that starcasters being used to destroy was lazy. They used to be for creating and building.
Why that ship? Quel just brought them a really nice one. The federation ship could get pretty dang far.

Pretty sure breaking the tracking is easier than fixing the current ship.
