He is massively overreacting. Even if some random crewmember sold him out to the Syndicate or Dranglaex, he would be with the entire fleet that can protect him. Also the fleet probably has better security to stop a spy from reporting his location, than some random space port. I wouldn’t undersell the appeal of being discreet and unseen, but this really isn’t a bad alterative.
He has his reasons not to trust the Feds. He was one of those Skels, once.
The real question is whether he’s right. Is there a high probability that at least one dirty agent in that fleet will sell him out? Or does he just assume that because he’ll feel less guilty if he assumes most people would be as disloyal to the federation as him?
obfuscation is terrible security, but we do not know his history. From the hints we have though it might be reasonable or even not paranoia but that he knows the corruption is that bad. He also has Nyrah and she might trust 1 guy but not the big ship.
Russia got a base flattened because the soldiers had personal smartphones that were used for location. In a war. In 2022. They have starcasters too.

There are still options here. The battle group was hunting Dranglaex with a starcaster. A random ship and marshall do not warrant too much attention. Quell can even be truthful about it, saying he’s hunting for the lost starcaster and is with people that can aid bringing the starcaster in. Either that or telling other marshall business that doesn’t involve capturing. Can be gathering information, which is true as well. There is no reason to already arouse suspicion of the starcaster in play, even if they join the fleet now. Joining a battle group would also make it unlikely for… Read more »
Yeah, sounds like a simple, “I’m here, meeting with a contact, on a mission. He’s understandably jumpy around so many Federation ships. My ship and his will depart the system.”

Seems like a rookie move for Quel to have his transponder broadcasting while he’s trying to be covert.
Yes, but Quel’s ship it leading them to the direct location.

Anyone else curious as to where the Dranglaex were about to depart to? What if the Lance Major actually WAS tracking the Dranglaex starter and we are moments from a massive fleet battle?
I’m 90% certain that the Lance Major had accidentally tracked Cort’s starcaster, more accurately his “practice”

Oh this is gonna turn real bad, real fast. If the Federation’s starcaster found him, the Dranglaex one will have too. So this is gonna turn into a huge space fight and will probably turn into a vote wether Cort runs, helps the feds and joins, or helps and runs. It’s gonna be great!

I think the worry is that the Federation definition of “Protect” might involve not him but the fancy jewelry he is wearing.
He won’t be wearing it for long if any of the three organizations force their way of “solving” the issue.
What might differ between the three is what they do with the “pieces” of him not attached to the bling.

running also means NOT blasting the federation ship and people out of the sky before running slower
The corruption might be that bad, but it is a fleet of military ships during a war. So there should be some sort of discipline.

To be fair, my impression is that it’s been a while since he’s been involved in “field work.”
Sounds like they’ve got the wrong idea. It wasn’t Quel who accidentally tipped them off, it was his Starcaster training.

Awesome, a bunch all at once. Thank you Tim.
