Hopefully, this shows Quel that A, Cort is a changed man who actually regrets his past and is trying to be a better person, and B, he is in control of the Starcaster because he didn’t accidentally nuke the planet they’re standing on in a fit of emotion but was able to hold it back.
Him activating it after it after being called out for past mistakes could be interpreted both ways.
“He is in control, after all he pulled back before it could do any damage”
“Good God… he almost blew everyone up! And this was a friend! Cort is a menace, and the starcaster needs to be given to someone more emotionally stable”
Fair point. I don’t think Quel would believe the second.
The Feds as a whole probably would tho, and Quel reports to them. Unless Quel breaks off and joins Cort I doubt “not giving a report” will be an option for him, given that they just picked his transponder in the vicinity.

Thankfully Cort has better control of the Starcaster now. If this conversation happened a few chapters ago Quel would be calamari right now
The thing is, I wonder why he provoked him like that. Its not completely clear he knows the details of the Starcaster and that inexperienced users might use it by accident in such a situation. But if he knew that, then he definitely tried to get Cort to fire his lazor. Maybe to alert the fleet and force the decision?
I think Quel might of been trying to get Cort to truly talk to him, show him what Cort was thinking. Whether he was thinking for himself or actually had a reason to be wanting to run and hide. I doubt Quel knows what she’s been through and what’s been done to her or he might understand as well. After all, she’s just a blob of organs and a head in a simple containment robot.

I am trying to find the end-game here because they cannot keep running and hiding forever.
One thing I’ve just thought of now is Cort running, but coming back for a Big Damn Heroes moment, like Han Solo during the Battle of Yavin in “Star Wars: A New Hope”. He’d probably need to get way better with the Starcaster, than he is now, for that to work, though.
I still expect to later learn he’s particularly well suited for it. The evil alien dude fried his hand nearly off entirely shooting a few beams. Cort takes little enough damage per use he was in the mood to draw a smile with it.
Nyrah endured drugs and the ultimate torture to keep the Starcaster from getting into the wrong hands. While she wasn’t wasn’t wanting Cort to be the wielder of it, they are both stuck so she’s trying to teach him how to use it and do good with it. Which Cort is trying but I feel he’s only doing that to keep her safe from any more harm. Lets face it, Cort is a budget Han Solo with no reason to care, until now! Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for a good redemption story as anyone. And this is turning… Read more »
Nyrah barely knows how to use it so she’s trying to teach Cort but it’s barely a case of the blind leading the blind. It was her brother who was trained for it, who was (maybe) killed. Neither of them know there’s another of Nyrah’s kind alive and using the other one, who would be a much better teacher. Quel might not know it but there are those who do, and IF Quel can get them out and safe from the rest they all 3 might be able to connect and speed up Cort’s training.
Keep in mind, part of what makes someone a good teacher is their ability to connect with and understand the student to reach through to them. Someone who is strictly by the book and military to the core isn’t going to be a good teacher for someone like Cort.
Especially if said person believes in the integrity and good standing of the Federation. Too different a mindset, too different a personality to work. Cort needs someone he can trust, and as we’ve seen that doesn’t include very many people in uniform, any kind of uniform.
I think the swearing fits in this case, Cort was angry enough that it triggered the Starcaster as a reflex. We might not know everything about them, but I highly doubt that is something that happens simply because someone is angry or upset. It takes a level of anger that the heat of a sun is considered appropriate.
Not that I am a fan of swearing, but when used properly it does convey emotions very effectively, especially with someone who doesn’t swear much or very often.
Yeah, Cort’s got a lot of mistakes in various stages. You may think that swearing fits the scene or the motivation, but clearly there are other better written invectives to use instead. There’s supposed to be (how many?) other species to draw bonkers word choices from. You lukewarm gallon of cracker grease. Cort’s worried about screwing up, unless it’s a Freudian slip over how much he’s concerned about Nyrah every time he’s opening his mouth.
Swearing has been scientifically shown to reduce stress levels, and when he’s overly stressed he shoots lasers out of his arm so I think he can swear if he wants to

Yup. Cort is growing. He is caring about someone else.
Just so happens its maybe the worst possible time to care about Nyrah over everyone else, but that’s drama!
I like it.

If Quel believes the second, he didn’t have enough faith in Cort to attempt this in the first place.

How dare you improve my comment like this. Take the upvote and be gone

I guess try to master the Starcaster first to at least have a better negotiating position when eventually found?

Yeah, me too. I’m getting kinda tired of them just running.

*Patron voters start laughing*
Ooh, interesting. It loses points because of the unnessesary swearing, but it’s a surprisingly adult reaction otherwise from Cort.
