This doesn’t bode well. Cort is unpredictable. Cutting off the one person he has a unbalanced trust with can be dire.

Uh-oh.
Cort will find out, belatedly, that Nyrah and Speck were kicked out in presumably a damaged ship. Or finds out now, if Quel tells him, hoping to keep him calm enough by being transparent. (if Quel can find him at all, if it’s all so classified now, maybe even his location inside the ship is on the need to know basis, and they forgot, or “forgot”, to add Quel to the list)
Either way, I don’t think Cort will be calm about it…

Depending on Federation structure, that commander could be in a disconnected command structure being vicen staff, and so outside of the rank structure.
Different department. He’s a Marshal, not a part of the Federation Navy. I’m not exactly sure how this translates in real life terms, but I feel like it’s the equivalent of Military Police vs the Military itself.

5 bucks says Cort’s location is about to be compromised.
Remember a page or two ago that the Starcasters are being moved to CovertOps. Quell likely doesn’t have official clearance to know about that which is why the request is being denied

Hey Tim. This comic is in CTRL-ALT-DEL instead of Starcaster Chronicles
I think Quel is finding himself spirit between loyalty to Cort who it has some debt to having made promises and the federation which “seems” to be about to sell Cort out. Its worth keeping in mind that one option for the federation here is to just cut Corts arm off and or kill him if needed to put that star caster on someone they feel they can trust and this is a desperate times/desperate measures kind of situation which makes that kind of thing plausible. I don’t think the federation is actually planning to do that but from Quel’s position… Read more »
It’s also a matter of Cort’s trust.
Quel is probably the only member of the Federation, that Cort has some amount of trust for.
If he feels that trust is betrayed, things might go downhill*, fast.
*They are in space and there’s no downhill, so, I don’t know, down the nearest black hole? 😉

It is easy to read past it but in the opening panel the part “I’ve been on hold” has a particular weight to me. I just feel there were at least four others Quel was transferred around between before talking to this commander.

I think its been denied because they are covert now and technically dont need to make requests….like Spectres from Mass Effect.

I love how waaaaaay back when the decision for Cort to join or not came up in 2022 and I said exactly this kind of stuff would happen, how people said I was wrong, only to be 100% right so far lmao ^^
Cort would have been better off if they had just kept running me thinks.

I’d like the next vote to change things up: Let us pick whether Quel helps/lets Cort escape, or tries to keep hold of him.

Clearly what happens next will show the darker side of the federation, although granted this really is a “desperate-times” situation. My question is how dark? The other starcaster girl – will she side with Cort? What Batman-style contingency plan does the federation have to keep her in line? Family to threaten? Explosive in her head? That would be a nasty twist, and drive Quell out too.

Yup, wrong category. I fixed it.
Now I really crave an office/fed-burocracy comedy spin-off of this comic. This just reads like my day with a particularly ornery project X’D
Well, sounds like someone just got drafted.
Quel starting to see where the shit is…well, he is a commander, can’t he just…give the order?
