I got into Galaxy of Heroes over the holidays. I’m still not really sure why. I don’t play a lot of mobile games, but at some point I was goofing around on my phone, and in a Star Warsy mood, and there you have it.
It’s decently fun. There are a lot of the typical mobile game trappings: prompts for you to connect to your various social accounts in order to earn rewards, a depletable energy system that of course you can replenish for cold, hard cash. Constant reminders of sales or items you could invest in to bypass some of the grind required to unlock things.
But setting all that aside, there’s still a pretty good-looking Star Wars strategy game here. You won’t know it from the first few game sections… it seems almost laughably simple. But, as you progress the enemy squads you face become tougher, and scoring those three-star results soon become less of a given. There’s an element of not only unlocking a well-rounded squad, but also leveling them up with training and gear.
We’re not talking Banner Saga-level of strategy here, but it all works for a mobile game meant to be a time-filler and digested in small chunks. There are most certainly better games on the mobile marketplace, but I did enjoy mixing and matching Star Wars characters from across the many franchise properties, especially when you start getting into Leader synergies.
