I’ll weld your face shut

I apologize for the unannounced downtime this morning. Little bit of emergency server maintenance and all that jazz. I believe the upgrading and whatnot is done and everything is rebooting and should be all set in no time at all.

Comic-Con gets under way this weekend, which means over the next few days we’ll get a bunch of news concerning the great geeky things we love. I won’t be there, but Blind Ferret should have a box each of CAD Volumes 1, 2 and 3 at booth #1330 if you’re in the market for that sort of thing.

Limbo is a gorgeous little game on XBLA. I say little, because it’s pretty short. You could tear through it in a few hours. That’s going to make it pretty hard to justify the $15 price tag for a lot of people, and I don’t blame you. I will say, however, that I still felt the experience was worth the price of admission. Not on the merits of gameplay alone, but the overall aesthetic is one that should be experienced.

If free is closer to the right price for you, Valve just released Alien Swarm via Steam for free, a nifty little 4-player co-op top-down shooter. I dabbled a little bit… it wasn’t bad. It’s hard to argue with any faults of the game when you don’t pay a damn thing to play it, but at least in the groups I was playing with, I found it a little difficult to avoid shooting the fuckout of your teammates. People would run forward, jumping into your line of sight, etc.

I am looking forward to grabbing three friends, throwing that shit on hard mode and going to town though. The normal mode I played was a little too easy, and I didn’t find a lot of reason to strategize with the different classes. I was playing a Techie, so I was psyched every time I had to weld/unweld a door. However I’d be welding a door shut behind us thinking “Yessir, this’ll hold those bug hordes back while we make our escape. I’m saving us!” Meanwhile the shmucks I was playing with were long gone, halfway across the map.

I think it’ll be a fun game with the right people, though. And once again, it’s hard to argue with free.
