As fun as Saint’s Row multiplayer is, there are some real flaws with the way its set up. First would be a problem with lag. Hopefully that can be optimized with a patche sometime in the future. However in the meantime, there is no control over how many people are in a match. You have no control to start a match when you want to. So often 6 people will join a match, and you think “Ok, that’ll be a fun game”. But the game says “No, fuck you. I can cram more people in here. How about TWEEEEELVE?! Muahaha!” and then you’re stuck in a game where everyone is popping around like rubber bands.
But the games that aren’t ruined by lag are great fun, and keep me coming back for more.
A couple of other games came out this week. Bomberman got here on Wednesday, but when I tried to play it online, there was no one else to be found. Probably not a good sign. All of the leaderboards were owned by Japanese players, and the multiplayer lobbies were like ghost towns. I figure it was because the game just came out, but I haven’t gone back yet to check how it is now.
I did play some games against the computer, and it was pretty fun. It’s very similar to the original Bomberman in gameplay (not a bad thing), just with fancier graphics. I dunno though, it just seems like they could have done more with it. Also Konami only has themselves to blame for poor sales… I don’t think this game was advertised at all. I don’t know if they were just hoping that the Bomberman name would carry it to success, but it was a flawed plan whatever it was.
I also got Enchanted Arms, and I’m not quite sure why. I love turn-based RPG’s in theory, the idea of playing through some epic, sweeping storyline, tough strategic battles, etc etc. But I never stick with them. Apart from KOTOR, I’ve never played any of them for more than ten hours.
I did try out Enchanted Arms though, and the dubbing is pretty horrible. I think I’ll switch over to Japanese voices next time I play. The game seems very traditionally turn-based RPG, and it’s also very linear. However it’s a great looking game, and I’m sure it’s lots of fun. Would be great if I actually sat down and played it.
There’s a new high-def trailer for Team Fortress 2 out. Oh man, it’s gorgeous. It’s everything I wanted it to be and more. I can’t wait for this game. I love that cartoony style. It’s the same reason I loved Evil Genius.
Episode 8 of the Ctrl+Alt+Del animated series came out today in CAD Premium. This one was particularly fun to write, because I co-wrote it with my friend Brian Carroll. He came down one afternoon a couple of months ago and we had a little jam session and churned out the script. It was a great time.
Assassin’s Creed has been confirmed for the 360. Not that we didn’t already know that, though.
