Serenity

September 30, 2005 by Tim

I would have posted news earlier, but I was out at the first showing of Serenity at a theater nearby.

I don’t even know where to begin.

At first, actually, I didn’t like the movie. Maybe it was seeing the characters I’ve grown to love on the big screen, I don’t know, but I felt a little bit put-out. The opening with Simon and River didn’t seem to fit the way they entered the television series.

Also, somehow they made Serenity feel… colder. In the tv series their cargo bay had a very warm feeling to it. Lots of browns and reds, a lived-in feel. In the movie it was steel. Cold, lifeless.

However after about 30 minutes I felt right at home again. I’ll try and do this spoiler-free, so as not to ruin anything for anyone.

The characters, the story, were great. I absolutely loved the new assassin character. He was very well played. Even above the excellent performance of Early in the last series episode.

All in all, it was an excellent two hour experience. I laughed, I squeezed my girlfriend’s hand at the tense parts, and I’ll admit, I even got choked up a few times. Those of you that have loved the series as much as I have, and have seen the movie, will understand exactly what I mean.

It’s been rumored that Joss Whedon’s master plan includes a trilogy of these movies. If that is the case, I will be there, on opening day, money in hand, for every single one of them.

I think he’s awesome for bringing me these characters, and I want to murder him for putting them in danger, all at the same time.

No amount of Firelfy will ever be enough.
