I’m genuinely hoping it will lead to a Zeke spin-off series where he’s an anti-hero learning to respect humanity. Like Venom only with an angry robot instead of a black symbiote from outer space.

Zeke asking if he “has” to kill humans is questioning whether killing humans is vital for his survival. Given that hes robotic, the simplest way to interpret that (though obviously not the ONLY way) is that he could be is powered by something that could come from the deaths of humans. In this case, blood.
As he points out, that ISNT how he works, which is why he doesn’t “need” to kill humans.
In the same sense that he WOULD have to kill animals if he would eat meat to survive (like a wolf). It would be in his nature.

It’s always interesting to see what pop culture knowledge Zeke knows or at least has been taught. The 3 laws, kool aid, and (duck face) selfies aren’t something you expect a combat ninja robot to reference.
I think if a sentient robot had access to the internet, the very FIRST thing it might do is look up how human society views robots (ie, what it IS in the context of our world). So it would have come across Asimov’s laws in regards to one aspect of how we imagine to integrate robots into our society.
I actually addressed this on this page, along with a joke about the Terminator movies, but I had to cut it for space and flow. Hopefully an opportunity will present itself further down the road to re-insert it.
It’s surprising how many people miss that Asimov meant to show how useless and bad the three laws were in regards to robotics, as would be any simple clear cut rules

Or, here’s a wild idea… *You* could use your own free will, to go find another comic to read. Instead of constantly bashing on a character (and by way of, the author’s choice/a for said character). Or, maybe even make up your own, inatead of being a grump that Zeke isn’t how YOU want him to be.
Seriously, your constant whinging about how bad or poor a character Zeke is, to you, on damn near every page he makes any kind of snarky comment, are beyond old. Grow up.
Seeing his surprised reaction I am struck with a new thought: maybe Zeke is honestly afraid of what he would do with his free will. I’m running under the assumption that he is not some sort of manipulative master who can and does hide all of his true emotions. He had the chance to manipulate those around him, tell them what they wanted to hear, but he’s stuck to being fairly impersonable despite no doubt believing it would lessen his chances of freedom. Let’s be honest. If freed, the first thing he’d probably do is either get revenge on his old creator, or disappear so that his creator would never find him.

Even just going by his responses throughout this conversation, I would absolutely shut him down and disassemble him so he doesn’t pose a threat to the world.
Why they’re going through with letting him go is beyond me. The moment they release him, he could easily kill all three of them, and Ethan is absolutely useless in a fight except as cannon fodder even if he can respawn again and again.
Scott’s still got control of the killswitch though, and Ethan and Zeke don’t know that (as was mentioned as Lucas and Scott were coming into the building just a few strips back).
Edit-2 strips back. I remembered wrong, the explosive is still there, but there’s not currently an active killswitch. So you have a point there.
I think this is a case of “What people would do in real life” vs “What people do in comic books”, which doesn’t bother me at all. In real life, I think dismantling him is the only choice, but in the realm of a comic book, letting him go is so much more interesting.
Well, their questioning is to determine if he is sentient; if he’s sentient, then he’s a “person” and as such killing him would be murder; an execution. He’s already subdued and no longer a threat – there’s leeway for self-defense, but once you have someone subdued and made a non-threat, that’s the end of it. Unless this was secretly a Punisher-style comic, but those comics typically don’t do moral gray areas in the first place and deal with villains slightly higher than “kinda a dick robot”. It could be argued that, as a potential sentient being of a new variety on earth, handing him over to the “proper authorities” to be judged is highly immoral. They are already struggling with the concept of letting him go, and they’re just private citizens with special powers who only have to worry about themselves and those they protect unofficially. You KNOW 99% of government entities would straight up lock him away for study, trying to figure out what makes him tick and how to intentionally recreate AI on demand… and those new AI would 99.99% be guaranteed to have… Read more »
