Honestly, at this point I’m waaaay more excited for Nvidia 3080 launch. I own both an Xbox one and ps4. I bought and played a handful of titles on them. My pc on the other hand is a current gen juggernaut awaiting only its new gpu. For the console players though, I hope this generation is as memorable as snes and ps1 were for me in my childhood.
Then just use your gamepass to play the same games you would on the console, but on your PC. Xbox bruh. On the toilet and bored? Stream that isht on your phone
The first few months are indeed critical in any generation of consoles. It’s not so much dire, as it is crucial. Not that they can’t “win” afterwards, but having a strong grip on market from the get go, makes for a much easier profit down the line. For consumers, it’s all about the fun vs the price. If you’re presented with two equally good, equally cheap consoles, then the question is: which has the better games? If you, a few quarters later, realize that all the good games are on the other console, you might buy that one too. But… Read more »
Depends on how you look at it. For certain, it won’t be competing well against PS4. But as far as Microsoft is concerned, it doesn’t need to: they are now more focused on just selling games, and term XBOX now refers primarily for Microsoft’s game publishing and retail platform, be it on the console or on the PC. The XBOX console is now just a side profit rather than the primary investment, and its games are now released simultaneously with PC versions. It’s isn’t fully a surrender though, as Sony is also slowly going in that direction, as they declared… Read more »
What’s old is new again. For a long time, PCs were the main focus of a lot of game development because consoles had died out. Then we got consoles with some amazing hardware and a nostalgia factor plus some console-only games and WHAM! everyone was enjoying consoles again if they had the $$$. PC gamers were lamenting the focus on consoles (like when Ghost Recon started having the character movements and controls driven by the limits of game controllers) and everyone was predicting the death of the gaming PC. The reality is everyone needs a PC (almost) for real life… Read more »
Sony at least has Spider-Man: Miles Morales coming out, and Horizon: Forbidden West, sequels to some of their great hits from the PS4 generation. Xbox had Halo, but that’s being delayed.
The visuals in modern games are pretty amazing, but a lot of the structure of games for a long time now has been about monetization and visuals vs. gameplay and story. There’s only so much sense in spending 50% of your budget for a game to having better particle effects, shaders, and to have a tree much more lifelike the the tree in the prior generation’s games vs. having fresh stories and settings. We’ve all seen it before, done it before, and a certain ennui sets in because it feels largely same-same. To make a knockout game these days, you… Read more »
Mundane? Demon’s Souls remaster is almost enough to get someone to buy a console. Almost.

ive heard nothing about these next gen of consoles but i can read from this they are trying to storm the market with basically no game backing…which was the thing so many people claimed would kill the switch. good thing switch had a game so top selling it sold more then its consoles did for awhile.
so far, PS5 is crushing it for me. The FF16 looks great, Demon Souls I never played on PS3 and this looks gorgeous and fluid, I haven’t seen a lot about Ratchet and Clank but the first time they showed it, I thought it looked good and weird with the plane shifting kind of mechanic or time shifting? (not sure there)

I feel like, to publish these, you’d have to do so alongside historical snippets to describe the context.
I mean, page one is titled “The Console War of 2013” and describes Wii Us and XBox Ones. Sooner or later there are going to be gamers alive who don’t know what those even are.
I’m not so sure that’s true, at least not within the next 20 or 30 years by which point I assume this comic will be over or the artist will have retired.
Just saying; systems like the Atari 2600 and NES came out years before I was even born and I’ve still played them both and even own an NES currently.
I think Me-me is right though. The Atari 2600 was my first gaming platform and my best friend had a Colecovision. My first gaming PC was a Commodore 64 (I don’t count the Apples of the day as they were primitive). My kid, by comparison, has barely touched PC gaming and its all about stuff on phones and tablets. Her aunt has a fancy NES and some other retro stuff that’s fun, but it isn’t any more attention getting than phone or tablet games. She’s seen fortnight and is interested primarily because lots of others are on there from her… Read more »
As someone who’s bought some of the old Penny Arcade print collections, I reeeally appreciate the commentary they provide alongside each strip, because some of those references to then-current gaming news did not age well at all. They’re still funny, but require context.

The only interesting title in PS5 launch arsenal is Ratchett and Clank… but that’s not like a big thing either. I loved old R&C games, but I’m not sure this will be a system-seller. I’m more excited about Mario remake pack coming to Switch this week. I guess it was a similar situation when current gen launched. I did not buy PS4 until God of War came out. It is becoming less and less exciting to buy a new console on day 1. We will probably get TLOU2 in some refreshed form and I did not had time to play… Read more »
I have to agree it looks amazing, but it is a remake nevertheless. Although, the best game I played on PS4 lat year was Resident Evil 2 remake, so… maybe:) Yesterday’s showcase of games made me more interested in PS5 – that’s true – I might still wait for GoW2 in 2021 with buying it.

Consolewars, Consolewars never changes.
The end of the last gen occurred pretty much as we had predicted. Too many games, not enough customers or money to go around. The details are trivial and pointless, the reasons, as always, purely greedy ones.

If the genres are geography, then how come Sony and Microsoft aren’t touching the same area to account for shooters?

Very nice. But somehow it feels like the Nintendo troops will be heavily fortified considering that there are no Switch consoles available in the world because they’ve been so popular recently.

WELP, after today’s event, the Xboxes have nothing to fear. Sony’s arsenal is indeed equally mundane. The biggest announcement they had is that every upcoming game they’ve hyped so far, be it a launch “window” game or a to be released later game, is also coming to PS4.
It’s definitely good news for everyone that they can still get these “next gen” games without buying a PS5 or Xbox Series X, but it also definitely makes both new consoles super unappealing at the moment.
I got a bit excited by the event. I’m nearly ready to buy. Demon’s Souls look really good. Final Fantasy was never my cup of tea but looks interesting anyway. Ratchet & Clank looks crazy cool. God Of War 2 coming in 2021!!! The first new GoW was the best game of this gen for me! There are some really good titles on the horizon! If I add TLOU2 remaster (surely coming soon) and Hogwarts Legends (did not hear about it earlier, was super hyped by the trailer), and Cyberpunk then already the first year of PS5 looks better then… Read more »

For sure I came here thinking I would see a comic about the PS5 Fiasco…….Tuesday is going to be a complete Shit show with so many more scalpers getting the xbox. Both Preordering are going to go down with being terrible not to mention the 3080 cards going in less than a second
Why? This comic is about the series X launch, and the lack of immediately available weaponry (games) for that launch. None of that has changed as a result of the Zenimax purchase. Absolutely none of the games acquired in that purchase will have ANY role to play in this upcoming holiday season. The purchase might not even be finalized until next year.
Lol, so true!

I’m excited for the second or third launch of the 3080, when I can actually get one.
Friggin’ love the Console War comics!!
The island shaped like a controller is icing on the cake. 😀
Cheers
I thought it was Australia at first smh :p 😀
Same
And it looks like someone broke it. I DEFINITELY want to hear the story behind that. Maybe it was from the “Souls” munitions?
But what does the PC territory look like? O.o
PS5 FTW 🙂
I’d really love to have the console wars in book form. Then again, I also don’t want them to finish.
I think the Dreamcast would be the first to tell you, “Console wars don’t end, they just get passed on to a new generation.”
Situation sounds really dire for the Xbones.

I was right all along! Well sort of. It’s not like I predicted this future – I just planted my flag here (PC land) anyway. 😛

that would be the case for the Xbox but the PS5 seems to be releasing with some power titled exclusives such as Demon Souls and Ratchet and Clank
