I can’t figure out what Overwatch 2 is supposed to be.
I mean, I’ve read as much as I can about the “sequel”, I know there are some new heroes, tweaks to existing ones, their fancy new “fuck supports” feature… eventually there will be some single player maps nobody knows anything about? But new heroes, new maps, some balance tweaks… isn’t that what they’ve been doing for the past five years? I’m struggling to see how any of it amounts to more than another update (or series of updates) to the game. It all seems built on the exact same foundation they already have.

It doesn’t scream “2” to me.
Is it just me or does the image on your t-shirt look like a Johnson?
It’s the Serenity… shame on you. 😀
Now that you point it out, I see it. Thank you
Inara: “It’s just Serenity”
😉
Definitely on purpose.
Not just you
Aaaand… Cue the Austin Powers shtick.
Yeah baby, YEAH!
Most spaceships that have to land/launch through an atmosphere do.
Sky rockets in flight….afternoon delight!
That was my first thought till I looked closer. My brain hit it like that single frame from fight club… did I just? na I couldnt have. see look its just a space ship… not what I thought I saw.
That’s actually, somehow, less impressive than a phone app sequel.
Eh… it might sound that way at first, but we can rephrase it to: “Our next update has a payment requirement of $20 and we reset all progression” versus “The next game in the series is android and iOS exclusive” – which do you prefer?
Their office to burn.
OW2 was meant to be PvE focused, they just haven’t released (or even teased) any of that side yet.
See, that’s what I’m looking forward to. If they drop that aspect… I’ll be sad and probably not buy it.
They’ve already said that the PvP aspect of Overwatch 2 will be a free upgrade to anyone who already has Overwatch 1. So the only thing there is *to* buy is the PvE portion, which should (from everything they’ve said) be a full single player and/or multiplayer coop campaign with some kind of leveling and skill tree system built in (so, no, it’s not more of the same thing we saw from the Overwatch 1 event PvE stuff)
They haven’t? They had one of the PvE maps playable at the last in person BlizzCon pre-pandemic when they first announced it. Very early stage demo I’m sure, but still
The lighting changes just look like each map is 6 hours later than it was before.
Kinda like Interstellar. One hour in game is one year in the real world.
Loving the t-shirt! Browncoat for life!
I knew it had to be the Serenity <3
This is also crazy when you consider just how long Overwatch 2 has been in development. From the alpha footage, a lot of the visual elements are copy-paste with some slight aesthetic tweaks.
to be honest, the current beta seems to use a lot of OW1 assets. It’s just to test the mechanics.
Well. At least that music in the video is fun.
To play devil’s advocate: OW2 has been in development hell thanks to Blizzard being god-damn awful in the past 4 years. I think they wanted it to be so much more, but the development teams kept getting taken off the project and moved around. I think they were in a place where they had to release some details, and it hasn’t been as ground-breaking as people were expecting. As long as they don’t sell OW2 as full price (the PvP 5v5 gameplay will still be free for all), and they only sell the Single Player content separately, I don’t mind… Read more »
I don’t care what they charge, or if they even charge anything. What I care about is them pitching an uninspired game update as a sequel, and even boasting that they’re going to “redefine what a sequel is”. Even if this “sequel” was offered entirely free, it should be shunned to make the message clear that their gross “sequel redefinition” isn’t acceptable. The way they’ve marketed this makes it crystal clear what their intention is. They’ve openly admitted it. Redefining something means to permanently change its definition moving forward. This “sequel” is Blizzard testing the waters for a new dishonest,… Read more »
YEP. They’re being VERY scummy here.
more ryan
😉
So they went from bright and colorful to 2007 brown. And the levels that _were_ brown went to night.
I honestly didn’t even notice the time of day changes, but I didn’t play the OW2 beta much.
Meh. I wasted my money by buying the first and they playing less than one hour. I wont do the same mistake twice. I will keep not giving a single damn.
Not enough people who take your option, and too many people who just buy the new damn game, no matter what. Because Blizzard made it, and it’ll be “good”, and other people will be playing it. Absolutely no analysis of whether or not they personally enjoy it or if its objectively good or anything.
A pox on lazy publishers, and the lazy buyers who enable them!
This. So much this. I saw someone post that Overwatch 2 isn’t Overwatch 1.5. It’s 1.1. It is a minor DLC change.
That’s what dunkey stated in his video ;).
I’ve got some 1500 hours in the game (mostly on Junkrat…) OW1 that is. I do have some time in with friends on OW2 and my takeaways are the following. 5v5 aka 1 tank isn’t a great move. Healers are not fun anymore. Tanks are now more just HP heavy DPS So far most matches are devolved into chaos and flanking. As a Junkmain, taking out healers is easier, I am not relegated to “break the shield” And getting a teamwipe with tire is way easier. However, without the tank system we’ve come to love and/or loath, hit scans are… Read more »
Uh-oh. Tim is learning the wrong lessons.
Quick, someone point him to some good games from trustworthy devs who actually care about their customers!
As long as he doesn’t follow EA and start a webcomic filled with micro-transactions…
He said “good games and trust worthy devs”
Considering what I know about “good games with trustworthy devs,” Tim’s going to make one more, awesome comic, and that’s it.
At best, he’ll overextend himself on the next comic and never actually finish it. At worst, he’ll either completely implode, be divided into several smaller pieces, or be bought and subsequently eaten by EA.
Kerbal Space Program. I forget who the devs are, but they have been listening and watching the community in order to help design the sequel. They also have been working on the original for 10 or so years, adding in popular requests and stuff like that. One problem though: it’s a bit buggy. They are trying to fix that in the second one.
Uh, I would. But I can’t seem to think of any. Except for Klei. Klei is awesome.
Can you imagine if he posted nothing for five weeks first, and THEN dropped this comic
You gotta love the retro-style look that they’ve gone with for Overwatch 2.
I mean, brown blurry bloom was all the rage back in 2009. So it’s nice that they’re appealing to the retro-gamers out there.
…2009 is not retro…<feels old now>. By the way love the Serenity shirt!
Hehe, I have the same thoughts about 1989.
It’s pretty much a rebranding, rather than a sequel.
That being said, it’s also free for the PvP section, making the PvE missions more like an expensive DLC.
I’m not mad at it.
The “2” part is just bad branding. The current OW beta is going to replace the PVP component of current OW1 at some point, no purchase required. The part of OW2 that you buy is separate with a full PVE campaign, cutscenes, and customizable characters. That part is still in development and probably won’t hit for another year or more.
Blizzard should have supported OW PVP as a service with regular updates from the start, similar to Apex or Valorant. Then released the PVE stuff as Overwatch: Tales or something.
Big thing is how much does the PVE aspect of Overwatch 2 cost versus how many hours of gameplay will you get from it. If they charge $60 for 20 to 30 hours of gameplay in the single player aspect of the game then I expect the game to bomb hard.
With that light filter it looks like they took a “2” on it..
(Slow Clap) Well played… (ThumbsUp.Gif)
i loved the archive missions when they came around. they announced 2 as basically the archives with a multiplayer that still used 1 for players. made me go “why not just make it an update then?” wouldnt be another cashgrab though so of course they wont add something for those of us who prefer the campaign mode of fps games.
Yeah the problem is that they haven’t actually shown anything new yet. The multiplayer is the same intentionally so as not to split the playerbase, so it doesn’t matter which game people buy. The only purpose of there being an Overwatch 2 is for the PvE content that they haven’t even shown a hint of it.
I think what I’d like to know is what completely different video game is going to get unfairly compared to Overwatch 2 and be considered a commercial failure because it didn’t appeal to the twitch shooter crowd? I still miss Battleborn, I’ve played a fair amount of Overwatch and talking about the two of them is like comparing apples and candy bars. Sure they’re both sweet, but that’s about it.
Left 4 Dead/Left 4 Dead 2… where valve added melee weapons and called it a brand new game? 😉
Well, Melee weapons, a couple new special infected, new uncommon infected, 4 new campaigns, a new vs mode, and enough tweaks to the AI to make the strategies that worked in l4d less viable…
ur joking right? l4d2 added so much. yknow.. an entire new campaign… new special infected… AND the old game with improved systems AND these new features
agreed. l4d2 had new models, new infected, new physics. it was day and night different.
Melee Weapons, an entirely new campaign, 5-6 new map modes, 4 new infected, New guns. Seems new enough to me.
Pretty sure Overwatch 2 is going to be how Blizzard finally tries their hand at “games as a service” so lootboxes and character skins galore.
If they EVER release the PVE part of the game that i’ve been wanting for the last 6 years, i’ll start to care. More of the same, gets more of same amount of my attention as I had before: nil.
amen to that. i never cared for their core pvp game prior. i will only play if its the pve that spawned the mp anyway.
As long as Half Life doesn’t inspire you on Friday’s comic, I’m good.
They should simply make the multiplayer release an update for the original game, and name the PVE element a whole new name (and game). I’m definitely not buying the sequel because there’s nothing else for me right now that makes me want to get it.
100% agree but for me i don’t care. it has SP i will finally play overwatch.
Overwatch: Ultra Deluxe
the Key is that you dont need to buy “2” everyone playing overwatch will just be playing overwatch with each other, only if you want to do the new missions will you need 2
It doesn’t even look any better. Overwatch came in out in what, 2016? You’re telling me in 6 years they didn’t create a better engine?
Much as I loved the PVE events like Uprising… Overwatch is marriage and two kids ago for me. In other words, a lifetime ago (when hero shooters and MOBAs were still the rage) and this feels likes it’s coming in way too late, with way too little.
I remain astounded it’s still in active development, and I hope it’s not for nothing, but I doubt it’s going to capture our imagination again like it did ALMOST SEVEN YEARS AGO.
I think there are several things going against Overwatch 2 so far: Activision/Blizzard’s reputation is worth less than garbage right now so people definitely going to be against getting the game by default. Tying Overwatch 2’s multiplayer to Overwatch 1 really screws over the game and I think really limits Activision/Blizzard from doing anything too substantial in changes. The balance changes I’ve seen in Overwatch 2 (i.e. removing one tank) kind of made the game a train wreck in gameplay now. The PR for the game is also pretty bland and has made mistakes. Though I think part of that… Read more »
I was kind of hoping it’d be a single player RPG. When I originally saw the Overwatch cinematic trailer years back, it’s what I hoped Overwatch would be. I’ve been disappointed twice now.
But it’s money … 2
Some people smarter than me on YouTube, among them long time OW2 players or those that returned for OW2, have put it better together than me. This is the first Beta, which only runs 2 weeks. It’s to give a first taste of the 5v5 matches, PvP – which frankly, plays a whole lot different with just one tank. But, here comes the biggest issue right from the bat: OW1 will still exist and also have 5v5. So, the only thing different later seems to be: PvE in OW2. The rest is literally mirrored. Long story short: smarter ppl than… Read more »
You forgot to remove one of the characters (RIP 2 tanks)
the “2” part is just an obvious “pay full price for a new game” kind of thing. The problem with OW2 is the shift of concept “mid-air”. The were supposed to release it all at once some time ago, but due to “minor-inside-turmoils” they are WAY behind the schedule and they changed the concept. The thing we now see as Overwatch 2 is basically just a major content patch to Overwatch 1 (it will be free for all owners of OW1 and is OW1 compatibile). The PVE aspect of Overwatch 2 that we are still yet to see will be… Read more »
Yeah, the PVE aspect of Overwatch 2 is what is going to make or break whether or not people decide to get the game.
Considering development thus far of the game, I’m not hopeful at all.
I bought Left4Dead 2 for full price, so I know exactly what you mean.
l4d2 is day and night different games though. and i go the aussie censored version
To me, it never screamed “2” since the first announcement. Also, trying the beta, I’m not convinced by how the 5v5/single-tank changed the game balance. Sojourn is fun to play, though.
I don’t like his facial hair.
its always been known that the multiplayer of 1 would be cross comparable with 2 but with a slight graphical update on 2’s end .honestly the problem is the majority of the big changes for the sequel does not revolved around the multiplayer maps and more about the single player campaign so showing off 2 in this way seems pretty counter productive.
You know there’s a whole PVE mode, right? That’s the ‘2’ part.
A long-term problem with live-service games like Overwatch is that the worst hardware they run on when they launch is going to be absolute potato-quality 5-6 years later. One solution is to relaunch as “XYZ 2, bigger and better” even though it’s the same thing under the hood so they can drop off support for some of those old potato PCs and consoles.
Eh. I’m not supporting Activision or Blizzard anymore anyway so I’m not that bothered by it.
Oh the new things is that your account is “reset” so now you can buy everything again
