The solution is to change game systems for a bit! Do some monsters of the week or blades in the dark

If you’re going that far, time to change genre too!

Or maybe just don’t game for a month or two? I mean, they obviously live together. Can’t they find some sort of alternative if they want to play together? Or is it more about these being the only times 3 feels actually important?

I was thinking that myself.

Find a place that does Laser Tag or something else that they can do together. Hell, sometimes, choosing an activity that involves touching grass is the best option for an alternative.

I’m not sure how 4 would react to the phrase “go touch grass.”

Play vampire or werewolf.

Take a player from the table every week, that player will co-op your dungeon master plans, the idea during this is that a powerful NPC who can see the future comes with you to give each party member an opportunity to see the future and change little bits of fate, but not directly for themselves, they’ll be testing the party individually and granting rewards at the end depending on the actions taken. This can end up being a God’s meddling for science or a bet taken on by powerful beings to guess what the result would be. Each player will… Read more »

This is why I only do milestone leveling, even if I really want to try exp leveling.

I ran a 19 year campaign and the PCs aged about the same as the players (which felt pretty reasonable actually). We probably put in around 1100 play hours total. The highest level was level 12. (AD&D and 2E, limited money due to their circumstances, and maybe we stretched the XP band from L3 to L9 or so as that’s the best zone to play with those systems)

We had story awards and had small XP bonuses for contributions at the table and for individual awards based on class and religion. That worked pretty well.

The catch with Milestone is that the game ends far faster and time to roll a new campaign.

Fine if that’s your thing, but for me, I play to enjoy my character for years, not weeks (or maybe months)

Man that awful feeling when you are the only one willing to keep something going. Best to just give it a good burial.

Hey now, even if the are enemies, you can absolutely choose to romance them instead of kill them.

Spice things up with some pvp, the DM makes a team of adventurers the same level and min max the crap out of them. When you beat your players leave them unconscious as if they weren’t worth killing to spark a fire in their hearts for revenge. You have a new big bad and your players are fired up about your game again. Or you start introducing tactics in your minions so that low level creatures perform at a much higher level. Have a discussion with your players and find out what they are interested in. The DM’s job is… Read more »
