Dunno, but it’s definitely not part of her name, which is “Janora Calway”. Page 09-22 has her introduce herself as “avisar Janora Calway”

Square bottles for more efficient storage on a spaceship, where space is premium. I like it.
The change of more advertisements than comic not so much. I thought I had arrived at fandom or something. I don’t mind supporting by getting adds, Tim’s got to eat, but this feels a bit much.
Are there more ads, or are the ads intrusive popups? My browser (on mobile) blocks most of them, so I don’t see the ads, but I’ve seen more intrusive popup-like ads even on mobile the last couple of days
I do not think we should install adblockers of we want to support our otherwise free comic. A signal that these adds are too intrusive is enough I hope. I can barely write this message for all the adds happening on my phone.the “privacy and cookie settings” are now even obscuring part of what I write, and the add above covers a part as well.
No one should have ads shoved down their throat for any reason on any website. If anything uses ads the sole revenue model, then it deserves to go out of business. I didn’t even know this site has ads.
Sad to hear it’ll be going but kinda figured it’d go that way eventually, with the current Patreon model the website itself is really just a demo. Thanks for the head’s up, truthfully hadn’t noticed the advertising changes because like most people I just… run an adblocker.
It’s a temporary test. An “experiment”, as Google calls them. It shows different configurations to different people to determine what works the best. I’ll disable it if it’s really ruining the ability to read the comic. I enabled it on a bit of a lark, because I’m inbetween ad companies this weekend. I’ve quit my previous agency, and am still getting set up with a new one, so I just let Google run some experiments to see what it told me. But ultimately, advertising is basically dead. All of the money goes to influencers and tik tok now. You have… Read more »
Thank you for explaining what is going on, and the transparency about your plans. Even though I cannot support you on Patreon and I use this browser to block ads and popups on all sites not just yours, I fully support your switch to less free content and moving to a patreon-based model. Good luck in your endeavor!
Clear. Thanks for the update. I think ads shouldn’t be a reason to subscribe for anything, but supporting the author will do. I have been thinking about Patreon some time. I just never could muster the energy to get yet another service. I try to keep things lean online. Though I’m a bit sceptical when I go to Patreon and have discussions there. Though I try not to fuel hate, I didn’t call this account Darkhorse for larks. It is because my opinions sometimes differ quite a lot from others, which creates tension. That being said, I’m sad to hear… Read more »
Is there a possibility to have paid content on this website ?
I am on the starcaster patreon for some time now and I don’t find the reading very convenient. I would pay for regular comics here but I am not sure if I would pay for regular comics on patreon.
Maybe. It might require a decent overhaul behind the scenes, but I suppose its possible to consolidate everything here. I’d have to really look into it.
I’m happy you’re willing to try a new ad company because I can’t afford to subscribe (I’m disabled and can’t work) and I’m fine dealing with a few ads to be able to access your awesome comic. I’ve been reading for like 15 years and it’s such a huge part of my life that I’d be super sad to have it go.
But at the same time you have to pay bills and put food on the table in a world that’s increasingly hostile to creative types so you do what you have to do
Understandable. Things change and this seems to be the year that a lot of people are changing up their business models As an example, my LCS owner is planning to close up shop and just sell comics on a direct mail basis. His reasoning is partially external (Real Estate, Comic “Events” that fizzle more often than they used to) but partially that he’s just tired of effectively working 60-hour weeks for what has dwindled down to the equivalent of minimum wage. I wish him luck but, between G-Mart and Mile High Comics plus a slowly declining comic book market, I… Read more »
I don’t really mind the adds. However, I have about 3.5 inches of blank black space on the right side of my monitor. I think a simple reformatting of the layout would improve things and allow for a larger presentation of the comic. At least on my end.

Mixed sex/gender locker room, how curious, reminds me of Starship Troopers.

Every time I forget about this little side plot, she pops back up. Makes me wonder if this character will have a bigger role as the story evolves more.

Sorry to hear you’ll be shutting down the public facing comic later, guess I’ll just need to keep an eye out for the physical copies to hit KS.
I see the ads, I don’t find them intrusive, the popup was mildly annoying, but not as bad as some.
Edited, because autocorrect decided to screw around with what I wrote…that annoys me far more.
At least the edit works.

Tim while I obviously support whatever you do for your best interests and life, I really hope you don’t stop giving comics like these for on the free side, even if its one update a week or something. I’d be fine with that. Been following you non-stop almost since you first started CAD 1.0 way back in the olden times of the early 2ks! For what its worth your humor and story telling in all its forms have helped get me through some rough times of my life. Either by breaks with reality, chuckles or laughs, or just a good… Read more »
I have no intention of stopping giving the comics away for free. I would simply cut the update days down a bit, while continuing the momentum on Patreon, to hopefully encourage a few more Patrons to offset ditching advertisements (if we get to that point).
Oof. That’s fourteen hits to my heart
I wish I could remember what the hierarchy system for the navy is in this. Is Avisar like Ensign, Lieutenant, etc.?
I don’t think that’s a rank. It might be a space version of Aviator.

Is this also true for the Patreon people?
Yep the ad changes makes the comic almost unreadable on mobile. Might drop it at this rate, even though I’m a big fan.

if you’re on android, search for “adblock browser” in the store

Okay it is truly bad though. After writing this I had two adverts covering my full screen. I’m going crazy with absolute hate for this new setup.
What browser are you using? I only see a static image ad above and below the comic, nothing popping up or obscuring anything.
No one should have ads shoved down their throat for any reason on any website. If anything uses ads the sole revenue model, then it deserves to go out of business. I didn’t even know this site has ads.
Good to know, that sentiment makes me feel better about shifting away from giving my comic away for free later this year 🙂
And that’s great! I’m more than happy to pay money for good content – just never via ads.
Sad to hear it’ll be going but kinda figured it’d go that way eventually, with the current Patreon model the website itself is really just a demo. Thanks for the head’s up, truthfully hadn’t noticed the advertising changes because like most people I just… run an adblocker.
Agree on the add part. It is effectively unreadable on mobile.

Does that mean all your comics will be locked behind Patreon or just Starcaster Chronicles?
To start it would mean that the website will drop down to 2 updates a week, while the Patreon continues at the regular pace of 3 pages a week.

Much like bottles for Rumple Minze and the handles of Jim Beam here on Terra/Sol 3.
Even better would be flat tops like how you can stack beer cans. Then you could really pack them tight.
Advertisement size made me think I got redirected for a second there. But I’ve been reading Ctrl alt del for over a decade, not going to stop now.
