Gameboy has paused some characters like Elijah Carter for an extended period of time, and he didn’t have a secondary power for holding his breath. “Every time I tried to reach him, I was yanked back” sounds like a very different effect, too. It sounds like being surrounded by a force field without the cartoon effect of “character frozen in ice is conscious but doesn’t need to breathe,” so they’re suffocating, despite having some ability to fight it.

This is for sure a new super who stress-awakened. Really sucks to be them.
we never saw any aspect of her home life unless she and ethan were together. could be she had money issues. could be that after the breakup she was so angry the neighbors complained about her violating noise restrictions in the complex. this might even put a new angle on why she was so… controlling of ethan, if her home life was out of control with bills and people demanding money she didnt have, maybe even struggling to pay off bad gambling debts from a former husband/boyfriend who left her or a parent who passed away owing money. (to make… Read more »
Superficially it seems like sadness isn’t her underlying reaction, but I do know that a lot of people that react violently to not getting their way, particularly sociopaths like her, do so because they’re trying unsuccessfully to make their own pain go away, which is why they keep turning up the vengeance dial instead of letting go.
I think the strongest evidence is that the comic is still in ‘The Breakup” arc. In earlier comics people had already started speculating whether Ben and Lucas were going to breakup, and I think that was mainly because we are still in the Breakup arc, but nothing seemed to be happening at the moment with his Ex.
I think this is bringing the story back to her.

Powerless in the grip of a Super… and he has just started dating another Super… this relationship, if it survives this conversation might not.
Depends on how the trauma sits in. On one hand, “you’re the thing that terrified me”; on the other, “you’re the only one that can protect me from your own kind”.

Yeah, In a city full of superpowers, it sucks being a cop. I guess it goes to some anti-super place. Maybe mandatory registration or something like that, which is not unreasonable.
Also, in 90% sure this guy will turn out to be a vigilant in the secret group, explaining the real villain is the system or something, but I can’t prove anything.
its been implied that big name heroes are already registered, while small time street level heroes are under the radar until they either do something so big it catches big attention or mess up major. its probably based on the powers they have, like how in my hero academia, so many people had quirks, but only those whose quirks were strong enough or versatile enough or could be taught to make their quirks more versatile, ended up becoming Pro Heroes while anyone else who fought evil were unlicensed vigilantes that technically were breaking the laws on public quirk use, but… Read more »
I imagine if this were a real thing, police forces would have some kind of “Super-SWAT” division to handle cases with Supers, and not just maintain ties with registered heroes. Police officers are pulled back and SWAT is sent into situations where the police are outgunned, instead of calling in citizens with registered assault weapons. Doesn’t change the fact that in this circumstance I’m assuming Ben’s dispatch didn’t know what he was being sent into, it’s just a curious thing that the police are always portrayed as having no way to handle powered individuals.
Because, if the police had any type of marksmanship skills, roughly 100% of Batman’s Rogues Gallery would be in the dirt as well as 60-70% of Spiderman’s Rogues.
Because, if comics used logic, the government would have kept plans for Forge’s neutralizer as well as several copies that they could reverse-engineer and superhuman crime would be a rarity in the Marvel universe.
In other words, things are the way they are in the comics of the Big 2 so the plot can happen.
But it wasn’t some escalation between supers, like with Emily. The problem is basically the existence of those powers. Ben is a cop, he won’t pretend supervillains will be gone if superheroes won’t exist. He might want to regulate superpowers or even eliminate them, if it’s even possible
*Shrug* ACAB exists in the real world. Gun Control always seems to boil down to two extremists saying “Ban Everything” vs “No Restrictions”. Plus, there is also the possibility of things starting small and building into a more extremist position. All the same, Ben is shaken up at this point but that doesn’t necessarily mean that he’s going to go down the extremist route. Right now, he just needs to process and we’ll see how it goes. A lot of it is whether Ben has a support system that he can lean into and whether Lucas can do the support… Read more »

Well, it sounds like everyone is getting caught up in an aoe. That said, there is a non-zero chance this was a defense measure if things were apparently “violent”. Like whomever triggered it wanted whatever was happening to “stop”, and got what they wished for…

So Ortega suffocated while standing there? Damn, that’s a shit way to go. I wonder if Ben’s attempts at movement helped get a little air in there, or if he was just lucky enough to have a full breath in when it started.
Could also be proximity, or focus, as inshe focused Ortega more, and maybe stopped his heart in addition to the breathing.

My guess is that it’s a subconscious power of some kind, his partner had his gun drawn and it killed him because it perceived him as a threat, and spared him because he was just checking on the other cop.
Think everyone is determined to link this to Gameboy or the ex or previous events and while maybe there is some connection or larger plot this seems more like a dramatic turn that will affect how he sees super powers that strains the relationship. Not necessarily him hating supers but being more afraid of powers darkening his normal support of supers

“She was screaming, crying…” – emphasis on “she”, “screaming” and “crying”. I hope this is not what I think it is.
Also, how much time has passed from Ethan’s break-up? Is it enough to get her (yeah, I hate the character up to a point I don’t remember her name) so down that she gets evicted?

they’ve been hit by Papa Roach
Upgraded version of Gameboy’s ability, perhaps?
Sidegrade. More widespread, yeah, but it doesn’t pause everything, it restrains it utterly.
Dunno, the drawn special effects are just like Gameboy’s and we never had a testimony of a paused person before.
(Of course, I would assume the brain activity is paused as well, but we can allow some artistic liberty, I guess)

Could it have been Ethan’s ex gf?
I hope not.
I was thinking the same, but why should she be evicted?

I think we have seen her home life. Didn’t ethan sleep over several times? I’m not sure he ever brought her up to his bed.
“Suffocating control” does dovetail nicely with her personality

well in the real usa the cops kills 3 ppl a day so we should compare with how many ppl are kill in the cad usa by vigilante to have statistics
And now we have a new member of the “powers are bad and should be forbidden or prosecuted” club

Building on your theory, Ortega is the only one who would have seen who exited. No witnesses?
Did the sheriff also die? 👀
Suddenly hearing Bob Marley and the Wailers.
