This comic right here Everytime I see it. So many NES games I’d be stuck on for months until one day I stumbled across the answer. And when I did, man it was like discovering the secrets of the universe.
yeah i both miss it and never want to experience it again.

Some games were intentionally cryptic for just this reason: now you gotta buy the strategy guide, or pay by the minute on a gamer help line. Every time I play an old game, I have zero guilt for playing it with a guide since it was so obviously built around you needing one to beat it.
Definitely coming from the time of arcade machines intentionally being as punishing as possible in order to soak every penny from the players. Moving the gaming machines into the home probably threatened that method so they had to find another.
There is another reason too. Back when you could rent games from stores, there would always be a super tough level in the middle of the game so that you couldn’t just beat the game in 1 weekend so then you’d have to rent it again or extend your time.
