All work and no play…

October 27, 2005 by Tim

I decided not to put up a newspost earlier because I wanted to talk about the games I’m playing right now, but I’ve been so busy with work I’ve hardly played them!

So I took the day “off” to put in some time with these new games, which coincidentally is still part of my job description. So I was goofing off, but it still counts as working. Let’s go down the list.

The Warriors: I mentioned this one earlier in the week. I don’t feel it’s as polished as it could have been, but it delivers in the fun aspect.

The cutscenes and storytelling are remarkably well-done. It really draws you into an already well-rounded game.

And then there’s the meat of it; beating the shit out of people. And boy, does this game allow you to do that. And with some pretty surprising depth too. And to boot, about half of the environment is destructable.

Tony Hawk’s American Wasteland: I’ll admit, I appear to have lost of of my skill on the board. Back when the very first Tony Hawk debuted, I got a very incomplete build from a friend of a friend about five weeks early. We only had three tracks, but we played them until we knew every square inch of those courses.

It’s not quite like riding a bike, but there is definitely still some familiarity with the series. And I’m pleased to see them going back to the core of the franchise, skating, rather than the wonton destruction of the Underground.

It’s a Tony Hawk game, and the controls, graphics, and environments are just as top-notch as ever.

Shadow of the Colossus: This game is obviously quite a bit deeper than the others, and to be honest, I had to forcibly prevent myself from playing too much, as I started to feel the claws digging in. I do have to remain productive on some level, for all our sakes.

Stubbs the Zombie in Rebel without a Pulse: This was an impulse buy based off of two things: Zombies and Zombies. Actually I just thought it looked really interesting, and decided to give it a shot.

My instincts haven’t failed me yet.

This game is no Shadow of the Colossus, or even a Warriors. It’s actually pretty damned silly. But silly in a wonderfully fun way.

If you want straightforward gameplay, here it is. Eat brains, cause mayhem, eat more brains, kill everyone, destroy the image of the perfect 50’s American lifestyle. Oh, and eat some more brains.

Nice sense of humor in this game, which always lands brownie points with me. Graphics leave a bit to be desired, but I’ve stopped letting that bother me now that we’re on the verge of the next generation. It’s only natural that things become less shiny once we’ve seen how shiny they could be.
