I agree that the new Ethan and Lucas haven’t yet had a fair shot to win our hearts, by sheer lack of content volume. They also got off to a pretty rocky start with the rushed introduction. By showing us your vision of their mature dynamic, you skipped right past the best part of any superhero plot – the origin story. At the same time, we lost the kind of fun, lighthearted introduction that eases us into new characters when we get to first meet them in immature and care/plot-free form. Instead, those qualities were forced upon characters for whom… Read more »

I disagree. Because I know that these are the same characters (with slightly different story) I am able to inform my knowledge of their behavior from the original CAD. Additionally to that, it is becoming common (if it wasn’t already, I don’t know) to introduce characters “in the middle” of their story. Having the origin story come later as a well-timed flashback sequence was, in my opinion, perfect. I really enjoyed discovering their origin in the context of Ethan’s moral and existential crisis. These are the same characters as the original Ethan and Lucas (or at least very similar) Ethan… Read more »

I totally agree on that one. Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us, Tim. I’m very happy for you being able to do for a living, what you love to do. Lucky for me, I’m in the comfortable situation of being able to let me surprise by each new update and enjoying pretty much everything you throw at us 😀 While we’re at it: I just re-read your story arc about Ethan giving up his Winter-En-Mas crown in this tournament of his. I wanted to thank you once again for so much awesomeness, I totally loved this format, too.… Read more »

Thank you Tim! I started reading this last Ethan and Lucas comics about half way through the previous series, when a friend of mine compared me with Lucas and himself with Ethan. I then went back and “binged” the everything from the beginning. I am a fan! I have been for a while now. I will tell you this, I like what you are doing, and yes I agree we (the readers) need more time with these new characters. That said, I am also a parent, and I also work from home full time. You have to take these moments… Read more »

Hm….
Time to see if your figures in Friday’s comic are up to par with what you claim they are 😀

Sooooo I just happened to come back… I stopped checking the site after Ethan’s “death” …..so does this mean the story is being brought back or just random stuff… and I can check back in 5 more years?

From what I’ve understood since the launch of Analog and D-Pad, the death of Ethan was so that Tim could reinvent the characters and storyline. They retain largely the same personalities, but aren’t tied down by what came before. They are closer to what they grew into, without being weighted by how they started. The storylines are engaging, but are slow to come out, and this is Tim talking about the challenge of the new format, and how he’s hoping to fix it.

Hey Tim, I’ve been reading your comic from near the beginning(When Ethan still tended to get killed by ninjas!) and it’s always been a staple of my “interneting” to stop by and check out the new strip or silly. I definitely understand your decision to switch A&D-pad, but after slogging through the new stuff and the starcaster comic, I freely admit that I really miss the old Ethan universe and I’m happy to hear that we might be seeing some more one shots to feed my nostalgia. Right now you’re wearing the three hats, Dad Tim, Artist Tim, and CEO… Read more »

I didn’t get to vote but I enjoy all of the storyline comics a lot. The Starcaster Chronicles was awesome as well as The Campaign. I get excited everytime you introduce a new chapter to these and even though we haven’t gotten too far into the Analog & D Pad I’m really digging those as well. Your art has gotten so much better since you started and the most recent comic is a great example of that.

These results really make sense in an other way. I started reading near the beginning. I was a young (18) gamer/nerd, and I loved the random stuff. It was childish and simple and silly. But I, and probably much of your audience have grown up and matured with you and your art style. Those who are like me enjoy the more involved and complicated characters and plot that you are making now. I have enjoyed watching your writing and story telling abilities (and your art too!) grow and evolve. I am glad for a narrative reset which will free you… Read more »
