Well damn. Like, I knew he was badass, but somehow it’s a whole lot more highlighted here.

Looks like Ethan saved Lucas’ life! (At least, that’s what Ethan will claim!)

Note to self: do not sneak up on Lucas.

I think it reflects on the mastery of his abilities, where using them is no different than breathing.

Make ninja bots move without turning on the light would also help #infrared

I don’t think they turn it on. They just didn’t turn it off ^^

In that case…
Note to self: make the ninja bots turn off the lights as soon as possible.

This page seriously made me go “whoa!” out loud for the first time in this comic.

So did Lucas’ power automatically protect shield him when he is in danger (kinda like Green Lantern’s ring does) or did he immediately throw up the shield (like he needs a conscious effort to do so)?

My money is on the latter, based off his hands. On panel 1 they are both tucked under the pillow. On panel 3 we can see one hand out and slightly contorted, as if strained, and exactly 1 arrow. Finally, on panel 4 we see both hands aiming for robots and 2 arrows. Seems to be pretty strong evidence that all of that was conscious effort.

The first one was defensive, the second set were offensive; so perhaps there is an automatic reflex for defense, but offensive use has to be intentional?

He pulled his hand out from under the pillow as well. I was leaning subconscious at first but the hand movement / positioning makes it look reflexive instead.

Good call – I didn’t notice that until you mentioned it.

(despite GUNnibal mentioning it – I must not have read carefully)

Looks more reflexive to me. Just like a normal person might throw up an arm to block a blow they see coming lucas did as well. Its just he has powers to back up that block so he also gets the power arrow. I doubt an arrow would pop if he wasnt aware of the blow incoming.

I hope those are robot ninjas.

Or there is going to be a heck of a mess to clean up.

They’re all robots. What do you think this is, Samurai Jack Season Five?

Thank god for light sleep, corridor lights on and ninja robots striking the same area instead of two different ones and ofc Lucas fast reflexes, honed by years of surviving Ethan madness. xD

To be fair they did just try to kill him in his sleep. I feel this is an appropriate response.

This is why you should never attack superheroes in their sleep. They don’t hold back.

Even if he didn’t have the presence (or wakefulness) of mind to identify them as robots, doesn’t really matter. To things just attacked him with swords in his own bedroom — so yeah, go for the kill. No time to assess whether or not he can just subdue them.

The lighting effects around the arrows have been consistently badass. I love all the little details that bring it all to life. Very excited for more!

They forgot about the Conservation of Ninjustu. One ninja is deadly, three ninjas are mooks. Should have sent only one.

Actually, as per the Goodrich Corollary, the Conservation of Ninjutsu doesn’t kick in until somewhere between 5 to 10 ninjas, depending on external factors.

The fact that the ninjas are robots is the external factor. The inverse law of killer robots begins to take effect after 2 killer robots are present. Any more must be useless punching bags.

well, you figure with all the stuff that ethan has prolly tried to pull over the years that lucas has a natural reaction to shadow hovering over the bed situations

Merendel

And also considering the pairs power its safe enough to “Shunk” first and ask questions in the morning after coffee. I mean heck thats how they discovered their powers, Lucas accidentaly-d ethans neck and then ethan respawned while lucas was trying to call 911.

Zeke didn’t bring his spear. In fact, he appears to be weaponless. Unless you count his taser-knuckles. Or the shuriken launcher in his arm. Or his general level of enhanced strength and agility. You know what, the spear was probably overkill. He’s good.

A spear in a small enclosed space is a liability, not an asset.

I just realized that’s exactly the sort of thing Ethan would have declared they need training for. You can picture it right? Lucas trying to get some sleep when Ethan suddenly jumps out from the under the bed dressed in black pajamas with a towel wrapped over his face and blasting an airhorn? Then when Lucas shouts and asks the logical “what the hell?” Ethan just points out that since they’re superheroes now they’re totally gonna need to be ready in case evil ninjas attack them. You know what? Typing this out I’ve managed to convince myself that this is… Read more »

So.. in the top panel, the robot ninja standing on the rug has his sword in his LEFT hand. On the bottom panel, the same ninja appears to hold the sword in his RIGHT hand…seems like a goof to me (or do I get something wrong?)

Frank
Frank

Reply to  Martin

The bottom one is doing a double grip, but the left hand is the primary, and both have their swords in the right hand when attacked by Lucas. Probably a Goof, but one possible defense against it might be that left hand is default when approaching, then switch to right hand when actively attacking. The double grip might be the bottom bot just switching hands preparing to attack

Having Ethan around probably delivers the same effect as having butler Cato in the Pink Panther series, keeping you always on edge. Not necessarily good for your long-term mental stability, of course, but when facing short-term challenges you can afford worrying about the long-term consequences only later.

Robot ninjas made a rookie mistake here. Opening the door all that way? Yeah, the shadow looks cool, but the light from the hallway is what woke Lucas up. If they’d opened it as little as possible and slipped in, we wouldn’t be having this discussion. Lucas would be dead, and they’d be laughing. Instead, this ambush just turned into an asswhupping.

The action in the last few comics has been awesome. Good pacing, good build of suspense. Lucas’ reactions in this page are really cool.
