Just to play devils advocate… I doubt you’ll find a single police/guard/armed forces organization that *doesn’t* have their fair share of assholes who are on the job to abuse the power that comes with it.
Same reason the priesthood has had such a negative image, and more lately football coaches/scouts.
Worked with some officers in several PDs (developing, delivering and supporting dispatch center software and mobile workstations for the cars). Also made friends and had two friends decide to go into policing. One of the 25+ year senior sergeants pointed out that there is a commonality between patrol officers and street criminals. Both have to be able to handle the parts that are boring, then go to a hot situation and take charge (intimidation, physical prowess, etc) and the very smart officers would tend to going detective or auto theft or some other specialized work. The frequency of firearms in the US versus most other places tends to make policing more risky. Where I live, if we lose a single cop, you’ll see that as national news. But the number of firearms deaths in my country is between 1/2 and 1/3 of the US numbers (accounting for population). That’s the only way I can even imagine a lot of the shootings I’ve seen where a cop arrives on a site and within 2 minutes, there are deaths and even sometime them are kids. The fear of the firearms the officers may face (to me) explains… Read more »

There are supers in this world, presumably worldwide. Some of which who have the equivalent of naval cannons which will easily put those “pop guns” assault rifles to shame.
The whole world’s in the RL USA’s situation in the comic.
So cute thinking it happens only in the us. Too bad I’m not even close from being american. But nice try anyway, there is nothing dystopian about police brutality and abuse of power, including in a shitload of work of fiction.
I thought Ethan owned 50.00001% (or some such) of Gamehaven (“technically”) and their apartment was funded by a substantial government/civil settlement over his sister Carlie’s death?
Kind of like how in CAD 1.0, Ethan was basically given the video game store by whats his face (Thad? Chad?) although that was over something else that I cannot recall.
I have autism so I know this. Barry didn’t really GIVE the store over (he was retiring, so he had to) and it was in a long arc of Christian (Lilah’s ex) doing things to fuck with Ethan, and there it was by buying up GameHaven, so he eventually just got the seed himself and Barry didn’t really care so he moved out the city and let Ethan have the store.

Should we concerned about how long Ethan’s current method will take to find a winner, or relieved that at least he’s only using d6’s rather than d20’s?
Despite recently losing his powers, Ethan should still have some pretty fresh tendons.

Huh, that’s new, this comic seems to have two names. The url is “downtime, p17”, like usual, but the page title in the tabs is “Laugh and relate with Lucas’ complicated date in this comic”.
No, it’s got a real title, and it has some stupid, google, SEO bullshit that I’m “supposed” to be doing for the health of the website, and mostly haven’t bothered with for a long time, but am giving the ol’ college try this year.
Perhaps the real title was the friends we made along the way.

Lucas is relying on Ethan to be the voice of reason. Lucas is doomed. I predict this will be super cute for a while but then end VERY badly.
And Ethan is probably going to say something to the effect of how he’s been thinking a lot lately about what it’s like to only have one life, and how important it is not to waste it being overly cautious.
There’s a YouTube creator named Julie Nolke. She has a “mirror Julie” that she talks to for advice. Mirror Julie starts off drunk and making mean comments, but by the end she’s dropped some profound wisdom.
So maybe Ethan will channel his inner maturity and give some sage advice

As an aside, it’s nice to see some Lucas hijinks. He hasn’t gotten a lot of solo time to get into his own silly shenanigans in this universe, so good to see when the horny hat is on the other side of the duo.

I’m worry now, Ethan had a break up with that cute delivery girl because he was a superhero. It seems that being a superhero is incompatible with being in a relationship in this universe.
I mean… if Ethan can consider courting Lilah, I’d say Lucas should go ahead and date the cop.
Besides which, probably wouldn’t hurt to have an Insider in both the media *and* the police.
…Pun not intended.
Journalists usually do not carry a gun, dont put you in jail and dont have an history of domestic violence tho.
This is a comic, not the US. Keep your dystopian shit out of fiction.

1 bad apple spoils the bunch. Releases a gas that makes others ripen/rot.

cop unions always defend the bad apples, ask yourself why.
Quick reminder that the first pride was an antipolice riot
Lucas, as a gay man, should remember our history
I mean, it’s a comic made IN and set IN the US though…
Still Lucas was right: Just because it’s a crate of apples, they don’t all need to be foul.

a bad apple can spoil the bunch, and it happens, sadly.

Are they not in their worlds USA? Are they in Canada? Australia?
Wouldn’t journalists in the US carry guns as they are Americans? USA! USA!
That very clearly takes place in the US. Lucas even brings up the public perception of the police.
Ah, but “the pen is mightier than the sword”. Or the gun, in this case.
What I think you meant may have been: Google 40% of cops
What’s a superhero without a romantic interest that’d be sure to blow his cover?
Completely unheard of!
Wait …
Thinking about settling down? And what will do Ethan with the rent?!
Barry. That is the name of the previous store owner. (I had to look it up myself.)
As long as it keeps him distracted from fear of death…
Roughly a little over 200 rolls, depending on if he adjusts for rolling the same number, rather than re-rolling.
So, funny thing, it occurs to me that Ethan is playing a game… To determine which game he will play.
Like giving a kid a shiny new toy and they play in the box instead.
I found my wife when “I wasn’t looking” and we have been together for a quarter century.
Ok but, did she find out about your secret identity?
WAhydrohead may have meant his wife was the superhero… mine is.
I’m honestly surprised that Ethan is not fearing for his life, in the last panel. What are you trying to do, Lucas, clutch his heart?
Just shows how much he trusts Lucas that it never even unconsciously entered his mind that he could be a threat.
Given Lucas’ dating history before the reboot, here’s hoping that Ben isn’t a dirty cop that’s been tasked for whatever reason to kill and/or rob him.
I appreciate that Lucas has his vices too
This is highly unacceptable.
Ethan should have asked Scott to make him a digital randomizer to speed up the process.
Doesn’t Ethan KNOW about carpal tunnel? My lord…think of the tendons! Those are the only ones you get…
Despite recently losing his powers, Ethan should still have some pretty fresh tendons.
