1.0 Lucas literally had the worst luck, ever, with relationships. The thought of Lucas in a relationship with someone who wasn’t secretly insane or trying to kill him is a bit strange.
Yup, from the very beginning. We first found out about it officially at Ethan and Emily’s double date, but Tim pointed out (to a shocked audience at that time) that there were actually a good number of strips, going back several years at that point, where Lucas or Ethan had a line that made far more sense in context when you understand that Lucas is attracted to men.
In a previous universe/version he wasn’t. He was dating lots of crazy women until he found a normal one. It was funny because he wore a kevlar vest for first date expecting the worst 😀 She found out so he lied to her he’s an undercover agent. Told her the truth later and she smacked him. They did stay together till end if I remember correctly. And then was this whole reset whole universe storyline.
I’m not complaining. It turned out pretty good. Gay Lucas? Why not?
Let’s not rewrite history here. Please link a single comic from the old strip that indicated that Lucas was bi. On the contrary, I recall many strips that explicitly indicated that he was attracted to women. I can’t recall a single one where he was attracted to men:

Girl, not person. That’s OK. That was that strip, and this is this one, but there’s no need to pretend that the old character was something they weren’t.
Merida could have meant from the start of 2.0, not the start of Tim’s CAD career.
For what it’s worth though, someone can be bi with a preference. I know a couple women who identify as bi but I’ve only seen them date men. I think it’s in part because they want to avoid the unfortunate drama that can come with a gay relationship – family, community, etc. Or maybe they’re mostly attracted to men and it takes a super special lady for them to feel attracted.

I have nothing against Ben, he looks like a nice guy, but he wears a shirt in a color that should never be worn in a city with supervillains and geeks. May his expected passing be a lesson for all us minor characters, and a slight character growth for Lucas

I recall something about a double date, Emily and Ethan, and Lucas and some other guy. (and also some talk, why does Lucas only have short flings, because of his superhero life, inability to tell people about it, etc.)
Pre-reset 1.0 Lucas once had a date who, through some mix-up, believed Lucas was rich and wanted to kill him for his money. Rock climbing accident was one of the assassination attempts.

A gay man is capable of being very close friends with another man without being attracted to them.
He loves him, yes. But it’s an almost family type love.
Also for the record it’s possible for straight men to be friends with girls too, no matter how attractive, without desiring them as partners. Most seem to choose to go with the “screw anything that moves” tactic though

The actual reason Lucas is gay here is because of the response to an old April Fool’s comic in CAD 1.0 where Tim just switched shirts/clothes on all the main characters and Lucas happened to wear Lilah’s Pink clothes, and little edgelords in the comments raged at the costume change and thought Lucas looked gay (in the homophobic way). Tim later responded he was tempted to make him gay just to piss off the immature part of the audience. In CAD 2.0 I guess he kind of kept that promise, but wrote him well, like a normal human being. I would not doubt that there were people that reacted that way to the April Fool’s strip… nor that I would respond to the homophobes by being that snarky. And I’ll agree it’s an amusing coincidence, but definitely not the reason why Lucas is gay in 2.0. During the year+ long process of planning out 2.0, and what I wanted to do/accomplish with the new direction, and what stories I wanted to tell and who these characters were/could be… I’m not sure that April Fool’s strip ever even crossed my mind, honestly.

He DID have a good girl in 1.0, but screwed it up when he went briefly stupid. Can’t remember if they ever got back together.
They didn’t in-strip. He did have a kid with a woman whose face was unseen in the epilogue though.
I believe they did actually. She was a redhead and Karen was a redhead.

When CAD changed from 1.0 to 2.0 Ethan was his son for a short moment before it timeskipped and then retconned it back to roommates.
