It’ll all be clarified next console season with the XBox 360X Series KY.
But to have actual commentary….presumably they started calling it “Series X” because they want the primary ‘name’ to just be ‘XBox’, and than have a series that they can increment; like PlayStation does with it’s numbering but without copying them overtly. I’m not sure that starting WITH “x” in the alphabet is the best way to do that though.
The naming conventions of x boxes are puzzling at best, confusing at worst (many people bought current-gen xbox because they thought they were preordering series x – lol) and plain stupid, Xbox? ok, xbox360 – yep, ok, Xbox one x- what? are you stuttering? why not just xbox one? xbox series x – wtf?????? what does it mean? can’t they just call it xbox 4 or 5 (if they are worried people will prefer ps5 over xbox4 because it has a bigger number… Please MS decide on a simple naming convention and just follow with it. Don’t confuse consumers any… Read more »
It’s actually smart marketing in a weird way….
XBox
Xbox 360
Xbox One X
XBox X
*360 Xbox* is what they can name the two in the series and keep the confusing naming scheme but also have it make complete sense!
More than likely they use focus groups to try out various buzzwords to see what people think sounds best.
They can’t use their normal method such as with Windows because then it would just be copying Sony, and most other methods have already been used by Pokémon over the years (colors, metals, precious stones, celestial bodies and now weapons)
Recall that the XBox One X and One S are actually iterations of the XBox One, like the PS4 Pro and Slim are iterations of the PS4. That being said, while I get the marketing of calling it “Series X/S” (because it’s the next one in “the series” of XBox consoles), it is a truly horrible choice and I fully understand why frantic monkeys are confusing the new and slightly-old options while madly trying to buy *something*. Though really, what else *could* they have called it without either deviating from the XBox name scheme or *gasp* being like Sony with… Read more »
It was simple. First the UCBox, Then BYBox, Then you got ABox and XBox.

No, it wouldn’t.
People don’t read signs.
This will SURELY catch their attention.
Good job, Ethan.

I….honestly can find no fault or flaw in this plan of Ethan’s…and that is perhaps the single most terrifying thing I can imagine.
Not only is Ethan right, but he came up with a sound, logical, sensible, accurate method of dealing with the problem.
*runs to panic room as the four horsemen surly must be on their way*
It is, until you realize that most parents going into a game store [to buy a console for their kids] won’t listen to the people informing them of why they are wrong, so why would they listen to an automated message telling them the same thing?
Finally! Someone has explained to me the weirdly confusing names of the latest Xboxs!

Eugh. I was working in retail a few years ago when hatchimals were *THE* christmas thing. I suggested a similar solution, as I quickly grew tired of stopping 2,000 lb+ pallets to inform people that no we don’t have any, and no I don’t know when or if we’ll have more.
Surprisingly, the department head didn’t like my idea. ┐(゜~゜)┌

Hey, is it just me or is the art style for this one slightly different than the others? They seem a bit taller and thinner, more gaunt. Less round. More serious, almost.
I mean, yeah, of course art is going to evolve, but I never, ever, ever noticed it at the time, only retrospectively. This would be the first time I ever noticed it as it was happening.

ha, I pre-ordered the PlayStation series X for only $500 before they ran out (they only had 3 left, I was so lucky)
Just finalised payment via gift cards yesterday, it will be shipping from the manufacturer in Nigeria soon.
I kept believing this “Xbox Series X” was meant to be a placeholder name, not the actual name they’re going to end with…

My cousin has an Xbox One X, when the price of the Series X released, I had to take quite a bit of time to explain to him the Series X is not the One X because he kept looking up the wrong pricing and asking why I’m excited when the X is already released. So parents, sure, but everyday gamers, also. I feel this has more to do with the “X” at the end than the actual name (and how people read on the internet these days, skipping words/click-bait titles etc.)

Could it be?:
One X = IX = 9
X = 10
So the next should be the XBOX X One
The next one is gonna be called “Xbox 60-60-60”, pronounced “three sixties”, of course.
More than likely they use focus groups to try out various buzzwords to see what people think sounds best.

yh … msdos,3.1,95,98,me,xp,vista,7,8,10
X. Box. One. X. aka X.B.O.X. They came 360 (full circle), and now they are trying to find a way out of the roundabout.
I think Tim actually made that joke in a comic before.
I like the meme that points out the Xbox comes in a box, so you could have one Xbox One X box.
Don’t worry it’ll all be come clear when the next one is released as either Xbox series Xbox one X or Xbox series XI
Xbox series XI or Xbox series X One
“Why not just xbox one?” Did…did you just miss that that WAS the next gen after 360? Xbox one WAS what they called it. the One X was after that.
When MS decides on a simple naming convention:
1.x 2.x 3.x 3.11 95 98 ME 2000 XP 7 8 10 10 10 10 10 10 …

It looks they’re sticking with S for lower and X for higher. Maybe next we’ll get Series S2 and Series X2.
If any of the major players need to provide lube with their systems, it’s Sony, not Microsoft…
Can’t increment a series starting with “X”? Just tell me Y not.
