Probably because Nicole’s technique is very true to life. Ethan and Scott fighting over a robot’s exploding head isn’t as close to our reality as a simple toxic, abusive relationship. Other storylines explore issues through the superhero genre (Emily and Ethan break up because he lies to hide a part of himself she hates, how do people react to crazy crime as seen through the lens of ‘supers,’ digital survellience exposing the guys’ identities to the Master, Lucas’ paranoia about outing his unregistered status to his cop boyfriend, etc.). I don’t really like Ethan very much, but I hate seeing anyone in an abusive relationship and that’s exactly where this is headed. Love-bombing, isolating from his nearest and dearest, infantilization, she’s got it all. All she needs is an excuse to beat the bejeebers out of him and then the OOT apology and the explanation of why she had to do it but if he just does/doesn’t do X it’ll never happen again.
