He made/brought cookies and they still won’t show up?

It really depends on the DM and the group. There are people who prefer low-maintenance sessions (rulebook printout and 10 bottles of coke, and you’re ready to go), and then there’re beautiful nerds, who go full Gandalf.

And then you have people like P3, who go full Bahl’s Stupefaction and go through all that trouble yet neglect to confirm attendance.

Depends if your a player its not that much work. For the DM you can buy a story or make your own world with everything in it. Plot, sub-plots. Its like writing a book from scratch at that point.

It’s not writing a book, it writing like seven books, because you have no idea what your characters are going to do so you have to be prepared when things take a turn in an unexpected direction, and you still end up freestyling a good portion of it.

For a good DM not so much. I remember reading a story where they needed to find out x or y, and that would lead them to a sewer dungeon or something. They somehow got sidetracked by a muffin shop, making a stupid move and getting damage. Despite it being a throwaway spontaneous event the group got hung up on it, and didn’t want to continue before this mystery was solved. Even with all further details thrown at them, it was ignored for this muffin mystery. Next week they delved into the sewers, where the evil cooks were poisoning the… Read more »

Depends on the DM.I usually take about 1~2 hours of planning for a session, and don’t make my own maps as that’s just way too much work. (plenty of detailed, awesome maps to be found online.) But there’s also DMs that will spend 5+ hours on preparing a session.

As a DM myself my rule of thumb. I plan .5 hours for every hours played.

There’s a reason that being a “Professional” Dungeon Master has become quite the lucrative gig-job for people who are talented at it!

“Let me explain something to you, Dave. There are two kinds of angry people in this world: explosive and implosive. Explosive is the kind of individual you see screaming at the cashier for not taking their coupons. Implosive is the cashier who remains quiet day after day and finally shoots everyone in the store. You’re the cashier.”

This story arc is making me really and truly hate the other Players. Usually their rude antics are like “ahhh you guys are jerks but this is kind of funny.” But this is different. I actually hate them for this. They’re not being funny in any way, they’re being absolutely awful. Like, burnout and ennui exist (and yes I get that’s the point of the name of these pages), and interests can fade. But DMs put a LOT of time into preparing for games. For them to blow 3 off like this and not show up with any notice at… Read more »

OMG.

This – this right here could be me. I quit D&D 12 years ago (after playing since the BLUE BOX and original PHB was a new release). I planed the campaign, I had miniatures, provided so much, and even cooked dinner every game night to get help ensure players would show up on time.

And then one saturday it was just: Oh yeah, something came up, can’t make it, maybe next time, etc, etc, and I was like, That’s it. Fuck It, Campaign is finished.

Never went back, and sold all my stuff.

That’s a real shame. I find it always works best when you find a good group. You just haven’t found here yet.

I know – I had many, many groups over the years, but it only takes 1 super shitty group to suck all the fun from the game – Forever DM Problems (TM)

This group has always been toxic, and barely interested in what 3 delivered. He really needs new players – there’s a high demand for DMs you know

Get new players, 3. I’m sure players 5, 6, 7, and 8 have been waiting forever for someone to DM for them. Sticking where you’re not appreciated is not good for anyone.

Now there’s a thought. Maybe 3 confides in four and she takes up the mantle so 3 can get a break, while 1 and 2 get invested in the batshit by-the-seat of her pants DMing. (And then maybe appreciates 3’s planning approach when it devolves into an incomprehensible mess).

I’ve found that th’ solution ta’ this here issue be ta’ simply continue workin’ on campaign concepts and such, but jus’ neva’ expect er actually use ’em. Simply have fun wit’ makin’ up stuff yer neva’ gonna use

Can’t be let down by failed sessions if’n ye neva’ host any sessions!

I was like “Where’s the previous page?”, then noticed this one seems to be in the “Analog & Dpad” archive, then found one more page (that I had missed) when looking… this is page 3 of the current story. Something that needs to be fixed perhaps?

I felt this way a bit when I spent a month re-cutting an old show that only had terrible VCD and VCR copies of an old english dub and release it after splicing all the audio into a foreign dub’s clean video to make a new clean copy of the english dub that hasn’t existed for anyone in two decades and the people on the Discord server committed to that show were all like “I like the video compression glitches” and “the recording tears were what made it for me”. Well, I’m glad hundreds of people enjoyed it from Internet… Read more »

I’ve got into DnD but I can see the appeal, sadly no matter how much people seem to enjoy playing, sooner or later it gets boring. Plus I suspect they are tired of 3 being the DM, too many guys get to be too bossy and cruel. I went through that with our clan head on WoW, wouldn’t let anyone enjoy the game, we HAVE to beat this (insert raid boss name) so you do this, you take one for the team, you heal as much as possible and would raise the roof if anyone had to miss a raid.… Read more »

Fellow DM’s, if your players are doing this to you it might be because they have lost interest in the story. One or two people missing a session because of life is one thing. All your players, for two sessions in a row? Might be time to sit everyone down and have an honest chat.
