I said he wouldn’t be sleeping alone. I didn’t say someone wouldn’t be watching him the whole time with a bucket of ice water to wake him at a moments notice.

And thus a new character joins our story – meet Smiley Rockface, the optimist of the team. Their entrance was a little rocky but I’m sure they will be a real foundation for this team.
It seems to me that if he has “automatic, can do it in his sleep” control over the thingy, it increases the risk of using it while having a nightmare, not lowers it. If using the Starcaster requires Cort to maintain full and utmost concentration, it is unlikely he would be able to do it while sleeping…
It’s just like getting your kids to get through the night without having an accident. It takes some time to control that sort of thing while asleep. Fortunately I think you’re sort of right. It takes some will to make it go off, but if he has a dream that he really needs to pee or shoot any of the several thousand people that want him dead…

LOVED that silly touch. Some classics never die 🙂 Also, yes Nyrah. So yes. Lots and lots of training. Please reduce the “Karate Kid” syndrome as much as possible. That’s what I call the “newbie beats someone with LOTS more experience after training for a few and with NO actual field experience, because they’re the star of the show.” One of the most overused bits of irrationality in fiction, ever. I mean, I don’t expect fiction to be 100% realistic. It’s fiction, duh. But you get me. Some suspension of disbelief must be possible. Knowing Tim’s work, I’m guessing he… Read more »
My take on a lot of those stories is that the star of the show also brings an approach not common with the more classically trained, or takes risks that others know better not to try. Specifically to Cort, he’s been more of an anti-hero as opposed to the Hero / Villain dichotomy of the major fleets. He’d be more willing to cut a corner that the heroes wouldn’t, also making him less predictable to the villains. We’ve seen it in his interactions already, and they haven’t been without cost. Reminds me of this quote from Serenity (2005): (Fanty) You’re… Read more »
Yeah. The wildcard. Not so much a hero, as a chaos factor that starts by acidentally c*ck-blocking the villains, then decides to keep doing so for non-heroic reasons. Until his obvious but reluctant “heart of gold” takes over (perhaps). Going from anti-hero, to hero then. I douibt he’ll ever be truly heroic. He just recalled enough of his basic human decency to protect Nyrah, knowing how much she’s been through… And besides, since the moment he got deep enough into this whole mess (when first rescuing Nyrah from the merc, I believe)… He knows there’s no way out. Even BEFORE… Read more »
Being asleep, and being knocked unconscious, are not the same thing.
Also, no one said knocking him out is guaranteed to work. She just tried it because she had to try SOMETHING. I bet the fact he wanted to stop, helped as well. Maybe if he learns enough control or has a strong enough desire, the Starcaster can go on even if he’s unconscious.
After all, it’s the machine that does the work. Perhaps it can “work on auto-pilot.”
your consciousness is more alert still when you’re sleeping. When someone startles you it might go off, when you’re dreaming it might go off. I think that risk is lower when your mind is less active during unconsciousness

Can he control the power of the Starcaster? Because he put holes through the eyes, but the mouth isn’t even all the way through.
Hmm I think he won’t be sleeping alone for awhile…. and not in a fun way.
I dono, think anybody would want to sleep near him? Sadly i dono what direction would be safe unless his arm is kinda bound down.
probably better to have it aimed upwards than downwards
that’s what she said

Sadly, he’s fated to be always taken for granite.
It is really hard when it gets killed two issues later…ups, spoiler, sorry.
?
I guess that’s when the team hits rock bottom
And neither if he has a bad awakening…
I’m summoning every bit of willpower I have to try and refrain from making a bad joke about morning wood in this situation…
Would you say it’s hard?
Maybe it’s supposed to be Nyrah? 😉 The sculpture reminded me of this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y6xzi_z1svQ
Nah if it was a her It’d have a frown.

Using it doesn’t require full concentration, CONTROLLING it does.

Wasn’t Nyrah’s method of controlling Cort in the early days a good stiff right cross (elbow) to the chin, thereby rendering him unconscious?

Learning control is a good thing, if only to reduce the risk of concussions.

linking page rather than image would be much more efficient and much much more reliable: https://cad-comic.com/comic/the-starcaster-chronicles-05-30-and-5-31/
DOH! that will learn me to copy paste the wrong thing. Thanks for the correct link.
Would it matter though? Last time he stopped using it when he was knocked out. Won’t sleeping be the same?
